我国物流法律体系构建初探

全国邮政业务总量去年完成1407亿元

据国家邮政局消息,2008年邮政行业保持平稳较快发展。据统计,2008年全国邮政业务总量累计完成1407亿元,同比增长15．9％;实现业务收入（不包括邮政储蓄银行直营收入）960亿元,同比增长14％。普通服务业务稳中有升。函件、集邮、报刊、汇兑等业务量和业务收入与上年相比,均有不同幅度的增长。据了解,2008年全国快递业务收入累计完成407亿元,同比增长18．8％,高于同期GDP增幅一倍,占邮政业总收入的比重已达43．2％。

New evidence on predatory price cutting

This paper presents new evidence on predatory price cutting as a monopolization strategy. The evidence consists primarily of what appear to be repeated expressions of predatory intent in business letters exchanged between senior officers of the old Tobacco Trust. These letters come from the trial records of United States v. American Tobacco Co., 221 US 106 (1911). Although they are not entirely free of ambiguity, the tobacco letters are remarkably candid and very interesting.

Entrepreneurship and being: the case of the Shaws

Our paper takes the case of John and Elizabeth Shaw, early nineteenth-century English hardware factors. The sources are almost 200 hundred letters written by the Shaws and their circle. Using these, two readings of the Shaws' experiences of creating a business are presented. The first is couched within a narrative structure of plotted stages and finds the Shaws starting, struggling to, and ultimately succeeding in creating a successful business. Here, their actions within a nascent industrialized economy can be described as entrepreneurial – they successfully pursued opportunity through founding an enterprise within economically and technologically auspicious environments. The second, more phenomenological reading, opens up for consideration the questionableness of their experience of ‘being in business’. Here the Shaws' understanding of themselves (as conveyed in personal letters) brings into question the academic tendency to emplot their story as one of the staged growth and profitability. Specifically, it resists attempts to ascribe to their experience entrepreneurial status, not simply because they did not think of themselves as entrepreneurs, but because the appearance of the business for the Shaws was woven with their lives in ways that belie the narrative direction and coherence that concepts like entrepreneurship give to it.

Facts, Fiction, and the Fourth Estate

A bstract .   This paper examines the reaction of the market to news that the Washington Post had won a Pulitzer Prize for a story that was demonstrably false. The reaction to the stock price of the Post as well as the stock prices of other newspapers is examined using dummy variables for two days, four days, and six days. The results show that while the decline in the Post 's stock price was relatively small, the t-statistics for all of the dummy variables are significant. The paper also examines the McChesney (1987 ) hypothesis that the nature of the newspaper business is such that it is difficult for the residual claimants of the paper to receive the financial gains of important news stories. These rents, he points out, are distributed to others. We look to see whether or not residual claimants of that newspaper can be harmed if that newspaper publishes a false story and receives large amounts of bad publicity for its error.

Issues of Power and Marginality In Personnel

John Shipton and John McAuley, who are respectively Course Leader of the Part-Time MBA Programme and Head of Postgraduate and Post Experience Programmes at Sheffield Business School, discuss the ‘business manager’ model of the personnel manager which has been a feature of much discussion in the personnel profession. They argue that it is based on a narrow and, ultimately, dysfunctional analysis of power which sees leadership as encouraging people to go in the direction they were going anyway.
