Using Malliavin calculus techniques, we derive an analytical formula for the price of European options, for any model including local volatility and Poisson jump processes. We show that the accuracy of the formula depends on the smoothness of the payoff function. Our approach relies on an asymptotic expansion related to small diffusion and small jump frequency/size. Our formula has excellent accuracy (the error on implied Black–Scholes volatilities for call options is smaller than 2 bp for various strikes and maturities). Additionally, model calibration becomes very rapid.   相似文献

The prices of currency options expressed in terms of their implied volatilities and the implied correlations between foreign exchange rates at a given point in time depend on option delta and time to maturity. Implied volatilities and implied correlations likewise may thus be represented as a surface. It is well known that these surfaces exhibit both skew/smile features and term structure effects and their shapes fluctuate substantially over time. Using implied volatilities on three currency pairs as well as historical implied correlation values between them, we study the nature of these fluctuations by applying a Karhunen-Loève decomposition that is a generalization of a principal component analysis. We demonstrate that the largest share in the dynamics of these surfaces' fluctuations may be explained by exactly the same three factors, providing evidence of strong interdependences between implied correlation and implied volatility of global currency pairs.  相似文献

We consider the relation between the volatility implied in an option's price and the subsequently realized volatility. Earlier studies on stock index options have found biases and inefficiencies in implied volatility as a forecast of future volatility. More recently, Christensen and Prabhala find that implied volatility in at-the-money one-month OEX call options on the S&P 100 index in fact is an unbiased and efficient forecast of ex-post realized index volatility after the 1987 stock market crash. In this paper, the robustness of the unbiasedness and efficiency result is extended to a more recent period covering April 1993 to February 1997. As a new contribution, implied volatility is constructed as a trade weighted average of implied volatilities from both in-the-money and out-of-the-money options and both puts and calls. We run a horse race between implied call, implied put, and historical return volatility. Several robustness checks, including a new simultaneous equation approach, underscore our conclusion, that implied volatility is an efficient forecast of realized return volatility.  相似文献

We study the cross-sectional performance of option pricing models in which the volatility of the underlying stock is a deterministic function of the stock price and time. For each date in our sample of FTSE 100 index option prices, we fit an implied binomial tree to the panel of all European style options with different strike prices and maturities and then examine how well this model prices a corresponding panel of American style options. We find that the implied binomial tree model performs no better than an ad-hoc procedure of smoothing Black–Scholes implied volatilities across strike prices and maturities. Our cross-sectional results complement the time-series findings of Dumas et al. [J. Finance 53 (1998) 2059].  相似文献

Implied volatilities are frequently used to quote the prices of options. The implied volatility of a European option on a particular asset as a function of strike price and time to maturity is known as the asset's volatility surface. Traders monitor movements in volatility surfaces closely. In this paper we develop a no-arbitrage condition for the evolution of a volatility surface. We examine a number of rules of thumb used by traders to manage the volatility surface and test whether they are consistent with the no-arbitrage condition and with data on the trading of options on the S&P 500 taken from the over-the-counter market. Finally we estimate the factors driving the volatility surface in a way that is consistent with the no-arbitrage condition.  相似文献

Factor-based asset pricing models have been used to explain the common predictable variation in excess asset returns. This paper combines means with volatilities of returns in several futures markets to explain their common predictable variation. Using a latent variables methodology, tests do not reject a single factor model with a common time-varying factor loading. The single common factor accounts for up to 53% of the predictable variation in the volatilities and up to 14% of the predictable variation in the means. S&P500 futures volatility predicted by the factor model is highly correlated with volatility implied in S&P500 futures options. But both the factor and implied volatilities are significant in predicting future volatility. In derivatives pricing, both implied volatility from options and factors extracted from asset pricing models should be employed.  相似文献

Abstract

In this paper we present an econometric model of implied volatilities of S&;P500 index options. First, we model the dynamics the CBOE VIX index as a proxy for the general level of implied volatilities. We then describe a parametric model of the implied volatility surface for options with a term of up to two years. We show that almost all of the variation in the implied volatility surface can be explained by the VIX index and one or two other uncorrelated factors. Finally, we present a model of the dynamics of these factors.  相似文献

In this paper, we present a new stylized fact for options whose underlying asset is a stock index. Extracting implied volatility time series from call and put options on the Deutscher Aktien index (DAX) and financial times stock exchange index (FTSE), we show that the persistence of these volatilities depends on the moneyness of the options used for its computation. Using a functional autoregressive model, we show that this effect is statistically significant. Surprisingly, we show that the diffusion-based stochastic volatility models are not consistent with this stylized fact. Finally, we argue that adding jumps to a diffusion-based volatility model help recovering this volatility pattern. This suggests that the persistence of implied volatilities can be related to the tails of the underlying volatility process: this corroborates the intuition that the liquidity of the options across moneynesses introduces an additional risk factor to the one usually considered.  相似文献

Using a stochastic volatility option pricing model, we showthat the implied volatilities of at-the-money options are notnecessarily unbiased and that the fixed interval time-seriescan produce misleading results. Our results do not support theexpectations hypothesis: long-term volatilities rise relativeto short-term volatilities, but the increases are not matchedas predicted by the expectations hypothesis. In addition, anincrease in the current long-term volatility relative to thecurrent short-term volatility is followed by a subsequent decline.The results are similar for both foreign currency and the S&P500 stock index options.  相似文献

This paper examines linkages in expected future volatilities among major European currencies. For that purpose, volatility expectations implied by currency options on the euro, British pound, and Swiss franc quoted against the U.S. dollar are analysed. Vector autoregressive modelling is applied to ascertain the dynamics of the implied volatilities across currencies. The results show that the market expectations of future exchange rate volatilities are closely linked among major European currencies. Furthermore, it is found that the implied volatility of the euro significantly affects the volatility expectations of the British pound and the Swiss franc.  相似文献

Prior research has documented that volatility in financial asset markets is most directly related to trading rather than calendar days, and that there is an inverse asymmetric relation between volatility and returns in both stocks and long-term bonds. We examine these relations in 37 futures options markets representing a wide variety of asset types. Using futures prices and implied volatilities from this extensive array of markets, we confirm that in all of them, save one, market volatility is more directly related to trading days. However, the nature of the association between implied volatility and underlying asset returns varies greatly across asset categories and across exchanges. Thus, we show that findings from equity markets apparently are not generalizable to other asset classes.  相似文献

This paper develops empirical evidence on the viability of a form of volatility trading known as “dispersion trading.” The results shed light on the efficiency with which U.S. options markets price volatility.Using end-of-day implied volatilities extracted from equity option prices for the stocks that comprise the S&P 500, the implied volatility of the S&P 500 is computed using a modification of the Markowitz variance equation. This Markowitz-implied volatility is then compared to the implied volatility of the S&P 500 extracted directly from index options on the S&P 500. These contemporaneous measures of implied volatility are then examined for exploitable discrepancies both with and without transaction costs. The study covers the period October 31, 2005 through November 1, 2007.It is shown that, from a trader's perspective, index option implied volatility tended to be more often “rich” and component volatilities tended to be more often “cheap.” Nevertheless, there were times when the opposite was true; suggesting that potential dispersion trades can run in either direction.  相似文献

If option implied volatility is an unbiased, efficient forecast of future return volatility in the underlying asset, then we should be able to predict its path around macroeconomic announcements from responses in cash markets. Regressions show that volatilities rise the afternoon before announcements that move cash markets, and that post–announcement volatilities return to normal as rapidly as cash prices do. Although implied volatilities are predictable, the Treasury options market is efficient since informed traders do not earn arbitrage profits once we account for trading costs.  相似文献

This paper compares the ability of four valuation models — the Pure Diffusion model of Black-Scholes-Merton, the Absolute Diffusion and Pure Jump models of Cox-Ross, and the mixed Jump-Diffusion model of Merton — to explain the observed behavior of market prices of foreign currency options. The empirical tests are based on a comparison of the pattern of implied volatilities obtained from option market prices and the Black-Scholes-Merton model with those expected theoretically if exchange rates follow the four stochastic processes specified above. The results of the comparison show that the pattern of implied volatilities is most consistent with the mixed Jump-Diffusion model.  相似文献

This paper studies the importance of heterogeneous beliefs for the dynamics of asset prices. We focus on currency markets, where the absence of short-selling constraints allows us to perform sharper tests of theoretical predictions. Using a unique data set with detailed information on foreign-exchange forecasts, we construct an empirical proxy for differences in beliefs. We show that this proxy has a strong effect on the implied volatility of currency options beyond the volatility of macroeconomic fundamentals. We document that differences in beliefs impact also on the shape of the implied volatility smile, on the volatility risk-premiums, and on future currency returns.  相似文献

Collateral smile     
We analyze the impact of funding costs and margin requirements on index options traded on the CBOE. Assuming differential borrowing and lending rates, we derive no-arbitrage bounds for European options. We show that funding costs and the CBOE’s margin requirements lead to a price increase, which translates into skew and smile patterns for implied volatility curves even under constant volatilities. Empirical tests confirm that our model-implied slopes have significant statistical power in explaining the slopes observed in the market. Hence, at least in part, funding costs and collateral requirements offer an institutional explanation of the volatility smile phenomenon.  相似文献

The volatility of an asset price measures how uncertain we are about future asset price movements. It is one of the factors affecting option price and the only input into the Black–Scholes model that cannot be directly observed. Thus, estimating volatility properly is vital. Two approaches to calculating volatility are historical and implied volatilities. Using index options listed on the Chicago Board of Options Exchange, this paper focuses on historical volatility. Since numerous methods of estimating volatility may provide different results, this paper assesses the impact of volatility estimation method on theoretical option values.  相似文献

This paper develops a model of asymmetric information in which an investor has information regarding the future volatility of the price process of an asset and trades an option on the asset. The model relates the level and curvature of the smile in implied volatilities as well as mispricing by the Black-Scholes model to net options order flows (to the market maker). It is found that an increase in net options order flows (to the market maker) increases the level of implied volatilities and results in greater mispricing by the Black-Scholes model, besides impacting the curvature of the smile. The liquidity of the option market is found to be decreasing in the amount of uncertainty about future volatility that is consistent with existing evidence. Exchange options are one of the most popular exotic options, and have important implications for many common financial arrangements and for implied beta as a measure of systematic risk. In this study, we extend the existing literature on exchange options to allow for clustered jump contagion dynamics in each single asset, as well as across assets, using the Hawkes jump-diffusion model. We derive the analytical pricing formulae, the Greeks, and the optimal hedging strategy via Fourier transforms. Using an illustrative numerical analysis, we present the relationship between the exchange option price and clustered jump intensities and jump sizes in the underlying assets. We discuss the managerial insights on financial arrangements with exchange option characteristics. Furthermore, we discuss the implications of incorporating clustered jumps into the estimation of implied beta with exchange options, in which the applications can be insightful and useful in finance practice.  相似文献
