The existing semiparametric estimation literature has mainly focused on univariate Tobit models and no semiparametric estimation has been considered for bivariate Tobit models. In this paper, we consider semiparametric estimation of the bivariate Tobit model proposed by Amemiya (1974), under the independence condition without imposing any parametric restriction on the error distribution. Our estimator is shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal, and simulation results show that our estimator performs well in finite samples. It is also worth noting that while Amemiya’s (1974) instrumental variables estimator (IV) requires the normality assumption, our semiparametric estimator actually outperforms his IV estimator even when normality holds. Our approach can be extended to higher dimensional multivariate Tobit models.  相似文献

In this article, we develop a modern perspective on Akaike's information criterion and Mallows's Cp for model selection, and propose generalisations to spherically and elliptically symmetric distributions. Despite the differences in their respective motivation, Cp and Akaike's information criterion are equivalent in the special case of Gaussian linear regression. In this case, they are also equivalent to a third criterion, an unbiased estimator of the quadratic prediction loss, derived from loss estimation theory. We then show that the form of the unbiased estimator of the quadratic prediction loss under a Gaussian assumption still holds under a more general distributional assumption, the family of spherically symmetric distributions. One of the features of our results is that our criterion does not rely on the specificity of the distribution, but only on its spherical symmetry. The same kind of criterion can be derived for a family of elliptically contoured distribution, which allows correlations, when considering the invariant loss. More specifically, the unbiasedness property is relative to a distribution associated to the original density.  相似文献

We perform maximum-likelihood estimation of a model of international asset pricing based on CAPM. We test the restrictions imposed by CAPM against a more general asset pricing model. The ‘betas’ in our CAPM vary over time as the supplies of assets change and as the conditional covariances or returns on those assets change. We let the covariances change over time as a function of macroeconomic data, and an alternative model allows the covariances to follow a multivariate ARCH process. We also can identify a modified CAPM model with measurement error. We find that the estimated CAPM performs much better when variances are not constant over time. Nonetheless, CAPM is rejected in favour of the lessrestricted model of asset pricing.  相似文献

Efficient estimation of a multivariate multiplicative volatility model   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We propose a multivariate generalization of the multiplicative volatility model of Engle and Rangel (2008), which has a nonparametric long run component and a unit multivariate GARCH short run dynamic component. We suggest various kernel-based estimation procedures for the parametric and nonparametric components, and derive the asymptotic properties thereof. For the parametric part of the model, we obtain the semiparametric efficiency bound. Our method is applied to a bivariate stock index series. We find that the univariate model of Engle and Rangel (2008) appears to be violated in the data whereas our multivariate model is more consistent with the data.  相似文献

ML–estimation of regression parameters with incomplete covariate information usually requires a distributional assumption regarding the concerned covariates that implies a source of misspecification. Semiparametric procedures avoid such assumptions at the expense of efficiency. In this paper a simulation study with small sample size is carried out to get an idea of the performance of the ML–estimator under misspecification and to compare it with the semiparametric procedures when the former is based on a correct assumption. The results show that there is only a little gain by correct parametric assumptions, which does not justify the possibly large bias when the assumptions are not met. Additionally, a simple modification of the complete case estimator appears to be nearly semiparametric efficient.  相似文献

A two-stage CAPM approach is used to generate cost-of-equity estimates and sources of their uncertainty for 10 GICS sectors in Canada and the U.S. under the assumption of relatively integrated North American economies and equity markets. The estimated cost of equity for the Canadian sectors is, on average, about the same as that of the U.S. sectors, but with a higher estimation error. The estimation error of the market risk premium is the most important uncertainty component for the equity cost estimates, except for Canadian Utilities where beta uncertainty is the most important component. Beta and interaction effects play a relatively more important role in Canada due to relatively more volatile sector betas in Canada. Our study suggests that: (1) Canadian cost of equity should be estimated in an integrated market rather than a segmented market and (2) higher importance should be given to estimating the dynamics of betas for the Canadian sectors.  相似文献

In this paper, from Frèchet’s metric, diagnostic tools are constructed for the detection of influential observations in Profile Analysis with elliptically distributed random errors . This distributional hypothesis allows the application of the proposed diagnostics to a wide variety of random experiences, not only for data from a multivariate normal distribution but also from other symmetric distributions, commonly used in studies of several sciences. The diagnostics are based on Frèchet’s distance between the distributions of the basic statistics in Profile Analysis, in the postulated model and in the perturbed model obtained by deleting an observation from the sample data. This metric is highly useful since it enables the analysis of the influence on the point estimation and the estimation error. Applications on two data sets are provided.  相似文献

This paper estimates food Engel curves using data from the first wave of the Survey on Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Our statistical model simultaneously takes into account selectivity due to unit and item nonresponse, endogeneity problems, and issues related to flexible specification of the relationship of interest. We estimate both parametric and semiparametric specifications of the model. The parametric specification assumes that the unobservables in the model follow a multivariate Gaussian distribution, while the semiparametric specification avoids distributional assumptions about the unobservables. This paper analyzes the semiparametric estimation of multivariate long-range dependent processes. The class of spectral densities considered is motivated by and includes those of multivariate fractionally integrated processes. The paper establishes the consistency of the multivariate Gaussian semiparametric estimator (GSE), which has not been shown in other work, and the asymptotic normality of the GSE estimator. The proposed GSE estimator is shown to have a smaller limiting variance than the two-step GSE estimator studied by Lobato [1999. A semiparametric two-step estimator in a multivariate long memory model. Journal of Econometrics 90, 129–153]. Gaussianity is not assumed in the asymptotic theory. Some simulations confirm the relevance of the asymptotic results in samples of the size used in practical work.  相似文献

This paper considers binary response models where errors are uncorrelated with a set of instrumental variables and are independent of a continuous regressor vv, conditional on all other variables. It is shown that these exclusion restrictions are not sufficient for identification and that additional identifying assumptions are needed. Such an assumption, introduced by Lewbel [Semiparametric qualitative response model estimation with unknown heteroskedasticity or instrumental variables. Journal of Econometrics 97, 145–177], is that the support of the continuous regressor is large, but we show that it significantly restricts the class of binary phenomena which can be analysed. We propose an alternative additional assumption under which ββ remains just identified and the estimation unchanged. This alternative assumption does not impose specific restrictions on the data, which broadens the scope of the estimation method in empirical work. The semiparametric efficiency bound of the model is also established and an existing estimator is shown to achieve that bound. The efficient estimator uses a plug-in density estimate. It is shown that plugging in the true density rather than an estimate is inefficient. Extensions to ordered choice models are provided.  相似文献

In this paper we consider the problem of semiparametric efficient estimation in conditional quantile models with time series data. We construct an M-estimator which achieves the semiparametric efficiency bound recently derived by Komunjer and Vuong (forthcoming). Our efficient M-estimator is obtained by minimizing an objective function which depends on a nonparametric estimator of the conditional distribution of the variable of interest rather than its density. The estimator is new and not yet seen in the literature. We illustrate its performance through a Monte Carlo experiment.  相似文献

We consider spline-based quasi-likelihood estimation for mixed Poisson regression with single-index models. The unknown smooth function is approximated by B-splines, and a modified Fisher scoring algorithm is employed to compute the estimates. The spline estimate of the nonparametric component is shown to achieve the optimal rate of convergence, and the asymptotic normality of the regression parameter estimates is still valid even if the variance function is misspecified. The semiparametric efficiency of the model can be established if the variance function is correctly specified. The variance of the regression parameter estimates can be consistently estimated by a simple procedure based on the least-squares estimation. The proposed method is evaluated via an extensive Monte Carlo study, and the methodology is illustrated on an air pollution study.  相似文献

This paper considers the consistent estimation of nonlinear errors-in-variables models. It adopts the functional modeling approach by assuming that the true but unobserved regressors are random variables but making no parametric assumption on the distribution from which the latent variables are drawn. This paper shows how the information extracted from the replicate measurements can be used to identify and consistently estimate a general nonlinear errors-in-variables model. The identification is established through characteristic functions. The estimation procedure involves nonparametric estimation of the conditional density of the latent variables given the measurements using the identification results at the first stage, and at the second stage, a semiparametric nonlinear least-squares estimator is proposed. The consistency of the proposed estimator is also established. Finite sample performance of the estimator is investigated through a Monte Carlo study.  相似文献

We present a variety of semiparametric models that produce bounds on the average causal effect of a binary treatment on a binary outcome. The semiparametric assumptions exploit variation in observable covariates to narrow the bounds. In our main model, the outcome is determined by a generalized linear model, but the treatment may be arbitrarily endogenous. Our bounding strategy does not require the existence of an instrument, but incorporating an instrument narrows the bounds. The bounds are further improved by combining the semiparametric model with the joint threshold-crossing assumption of Shaikh and Vytlacil (2005).  相似文献

We study estimation and model selection of semiparametric models of multivariate survival functions for censored data, which are characterized by possibly misspecified parametric copulas and nonparametric marginal survivals. We obtain the consistency and root-nn asymptotic normality of a two-step copula estimator to the pseudo-true copula parameter value according to KLIC, and provide a simple consistent estimator of its asymptotic variance, allowing for a first-step nonparametric estimation of the marginal survivals. We establish the asymptotic distribution of the penalized pseudo-likelihood ratio statistic for comparing multiple semiparametric multivariate survival functions subject to copula misspecification and general censorship. An empirical application is provided.  相似文献

Abstract. Developments in the vast and growing literatures on nonparametric and semiparametric statistical estimation are reviewed. The emphasis is on useful methodology rather than statistical properties for their own sake. Some empirical applications to economic data are described. The paper deals separately with nonparametric density estimation, nonparametric regression estimation, and estimation of semiparametric models.  相似文献

This paper develops a concrete formula for the asymptotic distribution of two-step, possibly non-smooth semiparametric M-estimators under general misspecification. Our regularity conditions are relatively straightforward to verify and also weaker than those available in the literature. The first-stage nonparametric estimation may depend on finite dimensional parameters. We characterize: (1) conditions under which the first-stage estimation of nonparametric components do not affect the asymptotic distribution, (2) conditions under which the asymptotic distribution is affected by the derivatives of the first-stage nonparametric estimator with respect to the finite-dimensional parameters, and (3) conditions under which one can allow non-smooth objective functions. Our framework is illustrated by applying it to three examples: (1) profiled estimation of a single index quantile regression model, (2) semiparametric least squares estimation under model misspecification, and (3) a smoothed matching estimator.  相似文献

The past forty years have seen a great deal of research into the construction and properties of nonparametric estimates of smooth functions. This research has focused primarily on two sides of the smoothing problem: nonparametric regression and density estimation. Theoretical results for these two situations are similar, and multivariate density estimation was an early justification for the Nadaraya-Watson kernel regression estimator.
A third, less well-explored, strand of applications of smoothing is to the estimation of probabilities in categorical data. In this paper the position of categorical data smoothing as a bridge between nonparametric regression and density estimation is explored. Nonparametric regression provides a paradigm for the construction of effective categorical smoothing estimates, and use of an appropriate likelihood function yields cell probability estimates with many desirable properties. Such estimates can be used to construct regression estimates when one or more of the categorical variables are viewed as response variables. They also lead naturally to the construction of well-behaved density estimates using local or penalized likelihood estimation, which can then be used in a regression context. Several real data sets are used to illustrate these points.  相似文献

A semiparametric two-component mixture model is considered, in which the distribution of one (primary) component is unknown and assumed symmetric. The distribution of the other component (admixture) is known. We consider three estimates for the pdf of primary component: a naive one, a symmetrized naive estimate and a symmetrized estimate with adaptive weights. Asymptotic behavior and small sample performance of the estimates are investigated. Some rules of thumb for bandwidth selection are discussed.  相似文献

In situations where a regression model is subject to one or more breaks it is shown that it can be optimal to use pre-break data to estimate the parameters of the model used to compute out-of-sample forecasts. The issue of how best to exploit the trade-off that might exist between bias and forecast error variance is explored and illustrated for the multivariate regression model under the assumption of strictly exogenous regressors. In practice when this assumption cannot be maintained and both the time and size of the breaks are unknown, the optimal choice of the observation window will be subject to further uncertainties that make exploiting the bias–variance trade-off difficult. To that end we propose a new set of cross-validation methods for selection of a single estimation window and weighting or pooling methods for combination of forecasts based on estimation windows of different lengths. Monte Carlo simulations are used to show when these procedures work well compared with methods that ignore the presence of breaks.  相似文献
