A comparison of the roles and responsibilities of manufacturing engineers in Japan and the United States

The manufacturing engineering work in nine Japanese firms is structured by a horizontal division of labor between manufacturing design engineers and production process engineers, in contrast to a vertical division of labor between manufacturing engineers and technicians in three American firms. The production process engineers in the Japanese firms link manufacturing engineering processes closely with production processes, whereas less coordination between the two processes occurs in the American firms. Regarding product design, manufacturing engineering, and production processes in the Japanese firms, employees engaged in downstream processes are more heavily involved with work concerned with upstream processes than in the American firms.

An iterative approach to the estimation of the abatement costs of harmful emissions

The ability to quantify tradeoffs involved in the process of reducing harmful emissions is essential to successful policy-making in the environmental planning area. The approach by Färe et al. (J Econom 126: 469–492, 2005) to computing point estimates of the marginal abatement costs (MACs) of reducing pollution by estimating the directional output distance function has been gaining popularity in recent years. The contribution of this study is to compute MACs as slopes of the iterated parametric production possibilities frontier (PPF) estimated on the basis of the set of efficient projections of observable output combinations obtained from the parameters of directional output distance function. Policy makers are thus provided with the general shape of the production possibilities set for a polluting technology rather than with a set of point estimates of the MACs. We apply our methodology to a balanced panel of seven Korean manufacturing sectors spanning the period between 1999 and 2009, obtaining theoretically consistent concave PPFs based on a large set of directional output distance vectors. Finally, we estimate the parameters of a directional output distance function corresponding to the iterated PPF.

Preserving the link between R&D and manufacturing: Exploring challenges related to vertical integration and product/process newness

Adopting a contingency framework, this paper explores consequences of manufacturing outsourcing and product/process newness for R&D–manufacturing coordination. Based on case-study findings, the following coordination challenges are outlined: accessing manufacturing competence and understanding suppliers’ processes (outsourcing of manufacturing and high newness); receiving feedback from suppliers and motivating suppliers (outsourcing and low-medium newness); exploiting manufacturing competence and establishing close working relations (internalization of manufacturing and high newness); early involvement of manufacturing and suppliers, and reducing variability in supplier performance (internalization and low-medium newness). The paper further elaborates on how the role of purchasing may change in order to address these challenges.
