This paper documents significant and persistent deviations from normality in security return distributions for the NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ from 1974 to 1988. Controlling for January and size effects, we find that the deviations of security return distributions from normality decline with increasing portfolio size and investment horizon for the NYSE and AMEX, especially for daily returns. Deviations appear to be greater for the NASDAQ than for the two exchanges even for firms of the same size. Ratios of monthly to daily variances are also larger for the NASDAQ. These results suggest that nonparametric or other robust statistical techniques should be used when valuing equity options and other derivatives, especially when examining NASDAQ security returns. They further imply that trading strategies based on market inefficiencies are more likely to succeed on the NASDAQ.  相似文献

Fama and French (1992) document a significant relation between firm size, book-to-market ratios, and security returns for nonfinancial firms. Because of their initial interest in leverage as an explanatory variable for security returns, Fama and French exclude from their analysis financial firms, thus creating a natural holdout sample on which to test the robustness of their results. We document that the relation between firm size, book-to-market ratios, and security returns is similar for financial and nonfinancial firms. In addition, we present evidence that survivorship bias does not significantly affect the estimated size or book-to-market premiums in returns. Our results indicate data-snooping and selection biases do not explain the size and book-to-market patterns in returns.  相似文献

This paper presents a complete solution to the estimation and testing of multi-beta models by providing a small sample likelihood ratio test when the usual normality assumption is imposed and an almost analytical GMM test when the normality assumption is relaxed. Using 10 size portfolios from January 1926 to December 1994, we reject the joint efficiency of the CRSP value-weighted and equal-weighted indices. We also apply the tests to analyze a new version of Fama and French's [Fama, E.F., French, K.R. (1993). Common risk factors in the returns on stocks and bonds. A substantial body of literature on security market anomalies has evolved since the articulation of the efficient markets hypothesis. These anomalies include the size, January, and weekend effects. The evidence of such anomalies has been based upon returns computed from closing prices. Although readily available, analysis of closing prices may not reflect returns obtainable by public traders utilizing market orders to execute trades. We have demonstrated elsewhere that returns computed from closing prices are biased upward compared with returns that would have resulted from using market orders. This study reexamines the evidence on two market anomalies using returns generated in a manner more consistent with the actual returns available to actual market participants.  相似文献

Hedge fund returns have a number of specific features compared to traditional investments which result in problems when applying traditional methods of risk analysis (Markowitz portfolio selection theory, Sharpe Ratio, value at risk calculation based on normal returns). These problems have to be considered adequately by insurance companies when constructing internal risk models and performing risk management for hedge funds in their investment.The present paper has its focus on the departure of hedge fund returns from the normality hypothesis, especially with respect to the statistical quantities skewness and kurtosis (fat tail problem). A statistical analysis of hedge fund index returns gives evidence that the majority of hedge fund returns show substantial departures from normality. In addition, the analysis shows that hedge fund returns are adequately represented by the family of GH-distributions developed in exploratory data analysis. Following this result a risk analysis of hedge fund strategies is performed on the basis of the GH-value at risk.  相似文献

We relate the cross‐section of stock returns to firm size, beta, and total risk. We find that as extreme monthly security returns are censored from the data, the significance level decreases rapidly for the size variable and increases for beta and total risk. An analysis of up and down markets reaffirms our findings. Consequently, average returns relate positively with beta, negatively with total risk, and not at all with firm size. We infer that investors willingly accept a lower average return on high‐total‐risk investments as the trade‐off for buying a chance at an extreme positive return. JEL classification: G1.  相似文献

This study examines the influence of day-of-the-week patterns in security returns on long-run IPO underperformance. Comparisons are made between the IPOs in Ritter's [20] database, and a constructed set of matching firms based on SIC code and size, using NYSE, AMEX, and NASDAQ securities. It is found that virtually all of the IPO underperformance occurs on Mondays and Tuesdays and that the degree of underperformance significantly differs from other days. Thus, a common explanation may exist for the general day-of-the-week pattern in security returns and IPO long-run underperformance.  相似文献

This paper assesses the statistical distribution of daily EMU bond returns for the period 1999–2012. The normality assumption is tested and clearly rejected for all European countries and maturities. Although skewness plays a minor role in this departure from normality, it is mainly due to the excess kurtosis of bond returns. Therefore, we test the Student’s t, skewed Student’s t, and stable distribution that exhibit this feature. The financial crisis leads to a structural break in the time series. We account for this and retest the alternative distributions. A value-at-risk application underlines the importance of our findings for investors. In sum, excess kurtosis in bond returns is essential for risk management, and the stable distribution captures this feature best.  相似文献

This paper examines the relative information content of earnings and cash flows for security returns using a methodology incorporating contextual factors which may affect earnings and cash flow response coefficients. For our UK dataset, we provide evidence that the earnings coefficient is related to earnings permanence, growth and firm size and that the cash flow coefficient may be related to growth. Although our results emphasise the value relevance of earnings, they also suggest that both contemporaneous and prior period cash flow are positively related to security returns and that market-to-book and market value of equity have predictive power for returns.  相似文献

本文通过对1994-2004年中国所有上市公司的流通股规模、总市值规模与股票收益率的关系运用截面回归的方法进行实证研究,发现无论上市公司的流通股规模还是总市值规模都与股票的收益率呈负相关关系,而且在剔除风险因素以后,公司规模仍然与异常收益率呈负相关关系,且具有统计上的显著性。中国股市存在小公司效应。这说明中国股票市场不是半强有效的。  相似文献

The main purpose of this paper is to explore the cross-sectional relationship between security returns and beta, size and book-to-market equity in the Shanghai A-share market. This study takes place during the period January 1997–December 2006. The methodology of Fama and French (J Finance 51:55–84, 1992) and Pettengill et al. (J Financial Quant Anal 30:101–116, 1995) is adopted. The Results show no evidence of an unconditional relationship between beta and returns. However, a conditional relationship is found when the data is split into up and down markets. The relationship holds even in the presence of size and book-to-market equity. Both size and book-to-market equity is found to be priced by the market and thereby regarded as significant determinants of security returns.  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to show that normality of asset returns can be recovered through a stochastic time change. Clark (1973) addressed this issue by representing the price process as a subordinated process with volume as the lognormally distributed subordinator. We extend Clark's results and find the following: (i) stochastic time changes are mathematically much less constraining than subordinators; (ii) the cumulative number of trades is a better stochastic clock than the volume for generating virtually perfect normality in returns; (iii) this clock can be modeled nonparametrically, allowing both the time-change and price processes to take the form of jump diffusions.  相似文献

This paper examines the effects of the mechanism by which securities are traded on their price behavior. We compare the behavior of open-to-open and close-to-close returns on NYSE stocks, given the differences in execution methods applied in the opening and closing transactions. Opening returns are found to exhibit greater dispersion, greater deviations from normality and a more negative and significant autocorrelation pattern than closing returns. We study the effects of the bid-ask spread and the price-adjustment process on the estimated return variances and covariances and discuss the associated biases. We conclude that the trading mechanism has a significant effect on stock price behavior.  相似文献

The impact that revisions of financial analysts' forecasts of earnings have on Canadian security returns during the 1979-1988 period is tested using an event study methodology. A post-revision announcement drift in security prices is documented; the Canadian capital market displays a marked delay in reacting to positive revisions in earnings forecasts. Contingent on revision size, positive and significant excess returns are apparent for up to seven months following their release. The returns, before transaction costs, are not marginal; over a 12-month holding period, excess returns are 18.2%. The results for negative and non-revisions in earnings forecasts suggest that the market reacts quite efficiently to the information implicit in these events. An explanation for the asymmetrical results for the positive and negative revision portfolios is offered. These findings are robust to five control procedures used to test the sensitivity of the reported results to changes in the methodology. A number of explanations for this result are proposed including overlapping excess returns and beta shifts; none reconciles the anomalous results.  相似文献

We present evidence of the cross-sectional relation between security returns, beta, firm size and book-to-market ratio over the period 1971 to 1993 on the New Zealand sharemarket. Our results suggest that the NZSE-40 market index is not a mean-variance efficient market proxy—the betas calculated with respect to it being of little use for explaining expected returns cross-sectionally. Also, there is a significant positive relation between book-to-market ratio and average return.  相似文献

This paper investigates the joint determination of trading volume and returns. Our approach follows from the argument that trading activity depends on security returns, thus resulting in a reverse causality from returns to trading activity. Using exogenous instruments for security trading activity, we estimate a system of two‐stage simultaneous equations to better model the return‐volume relationship. Our results confirm that returns and trading volume are determined simultaneously in both stock and corporate bond markets and that conclusions about the direction and significance of causality between volume and returns can be reversed once one corrects for the endogeneity of volume.  相似文献

Statistical tests for multivariate event studies—exact or asymptotic—are derived based on multivariate normality. As it has been previously documented that the performances of these tests are not satisfactory, because stock returns are far from normally distributed (especially for daily returns), this paper proposes the use of bootstrap methods, which are free from any specific distributional assumption, to provide better approximations to the sampling distributions of test statistics in multivariate event studies. The Monte Carlo experiments based on real daily returns data show that the bootstrap tests outperform the traditional tests by having close rejection rates to the nominal significance levels. The traditional tests, in contrast, tend to reject the null hypotheses too often.  相似文献

This paper aims at reconciling two apparently contradictory empirical regularities of financial returns, namely, the fact that the empirical distribution of returns tends to normality as the frequency of observation decreases (aggregational Gaussianity) combined with the fact that the conditional variance of high frequency returns seems to have a (fractional) unit root, in which case the unconditional variance is infinite. We provide evidence that aggregational Gaussianity and infinite variance can coexist, provided that all the moments of the unconditional distribution whose order is less than two exist. The latter characterizes the case of Integrated and Fractionally Integrated GARCH processes. Finally, we discuss testing for aggregational Gaussianity under barely infinite variance. Our empirical motivation derives from commodity prices and stock indices, while our results are relevant for financial returns in general.  相似文献

In this paper, market microstructure models are considered to assess the influence of the key components that drive asset prices. Synchronization techniques and sampling methods are reviewed. Alternatives to normally distributed asset returns, specifically subordinated Brownian motion, are considered. The influential components of the price processes are then combined under tick time to recover normality of asset returns via subordination, a process I denote as ‘natural time’. Normally distributed returns are obtained with the natural time approach which is also found to dominate GARCH results.  相似文献
