In this issue of the International Journal of Technology and Design, we report on a series of case studies from the second
phase of an international project—Developing Professional Thinking for Technology Teachers (DEPTH2). The first phase of the
project was a study conducted with both primary and secondary technology pre-service teacher education students in a number
of different countries who were given the same teacher-knowledge graphical framework as a tool to support reflection on their
professional knowledge. We discovered that, despite the different country contexts, student teachers of technology could articulate
aspects of their developing teacher knowledge using the same framework for teacher professional development. As previously
reported in this journal (Banks et al. International Journal of Technology and Design Education, 14, 141–157, 2004), the common graphical tool enabled them to set out their subject knowledge, pedagogical knowledge and ‘school’
knowledge and was useful in helping them become more self-aware. In this second phase of the project we have developed this
line of research in two ways. First, we extended the range of participants to include experienced teachers involved in in-service
work connected to curriculum development. Second, we looked at the inter-relationship for pre-service teachers between their
developing professional knowledge and their own ‘personal subject construct’. In this article, the theoretical framework for
the subsequent papers is described and set in the context of recent debates surrounding the nature and importance of teacher
knowledge; and the way such professional knowledge can be articulated by teachers. 相似文献

In light of increasing licensing, we challenge the common assumption that product development and technology licensing are substitutes. We develop a resource‐based framework, which distinguishes a firm's technological resource base and technology exploitation processes. We further combine survey, patent, and financial data of 228 medium‐sized and large industrial companies to examine the interactions of firms' product development processes and technology licensing processes in order to explain heterogeneity in new product revenues, licensing performance, and firm performance. The results underscore that product development, which indicates innovative capacity, and technology licensing, which indicates desorptive capacity, are complements rather than substitutes in integrated knowledge exploitation in medium‐sized and large firms. This complementarity is particularly pronounced in firms with an emphasis on cross‐licensing and with a strong patent portfolio. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

In Japan, some fishery cooperative associations use their fishery harbor names as a brand to differentiate their own shore fish. Most notable is the branding of mackerel. In this paper, we analyze the effects of branding using a discrete/continuous model. The results are as follows. First, there is first-mover advantage in the branding of mackerel. For instance, unlike other brands of mackerel, Seki-saba as the pioneering brand can increase its brand equity. Second, other brands have opposing effects that increase and decrease the brand equity of the pioneering brand. We find the former is strongest in the early stages of fishery branding when there are few competing brands of mackerel, while the latter becomes stronger in later stages when many other brands emerge. 相似文献

Unbundling the effects of institutions on firm resources: The contingent value of being local in emerging economy private equity 下载免费PDF全文
How do host country institutions influence the value of a firm's local resources? Using a novel dataset on the performance of 47 private equity (PE) firms in 49 emerging economies, we show evidence that the answer depends on the type of institution. Focusing on conditions at the time of initial investment, we find that PE firms with local origins and foreign PE firms with local experience performed better when contract enforcement institutions were weak than when they were strong. Financial development, in contrast, may have undermined the value of PE firm local origins. These results help reconcile contrasting findings on how host country institutions influence performance and lead us to contend that unbundling institutions is necessary for continued development of the institutions‐based view. The paper explores the adoption of the social dimensions of sustainability in technological design tasks. It uses a lens which
contrasts education for sustainability as ‘a frame of mind’ with an attempt to bridge a ‘value-action gap’. This lens is used
to analyse the effectiveness of the Sustainable Design Award, an intervention in post-16 technology education in three countries
to encourage students and teachers to strengthen design for sustainability in their work. In each country, the intervention
project provided varying combinations of teacher professional development, provision of learning resources, in school student
support, lobbying of key curriculum policy makers and a student Award. Three types of teacher are identified by reference
to their motivation for introducing sustainability into their teaching of design. These teacher types are linked to a hierarchy
of teachers’ understanding of the social dimension of sustainability. The consequences for continuous professional development
are examined. The findings are then used to critique the value of the lens. 相似文献

Research summary: In this article, we document a shift away from science by large corporations between 1980 and 2006. We find that publications by company scientists have declined over time in a range of industries. We also find that the value attributable to scientific research has dropped, whereas the value attributable to technical knowledge (as measured by patents) has remained stable. These trends are unlikely to be driven principally by changes in publication practices. Furthermore, science continues to be useful as an input into innovation. Our evidence points to a reduction of the private benefits of internal research. Large firms still value the golden eggs of science (as reflected in patents), but seem to be increasingly unwilling to invest in the golden goose itself (the internal scientific capabilities). Managerial summary: There is a widespread belief among commentators that large American corporations are withdrawing from research. Large corporations may still collaborate with universities and acquire promising science‐based start‐ups, but their labs increasingly focus on developing existing knowledge and commercializing it, rather than creating new knowledge. In this article, we combine firm‐level financial information with a large and comprehensive data set on firm publications, patents and acquisitions to quantify the withdrawal from science by large American corporations between 1980 and 2006. This withdrawal is associated with a decline in the private value of research activities, even though scientific knowledge itself remains important for corporate invention. The purpose of this study was to explore the value and impact of social interaction upon children's design and technological thinking and actions. The study was based on the assumption that constructivistic driven and open-ended, creative design learning contexts enabled children to form, as well as to reconstruct, their designing and making capabilities and knowledge. Children were required, by means of open and closed teaching methods, to technologically create a particular product which used sound for a chosen purpose.The resultant multiple data collection processes, using videos of children working, examination of children's completed projects and semi-structured interview techniques, enabled the authors to analyse childrens' acquisition of Design and Technology (D&T) knowledge.Pupil's capabilities were seen to be enhanced through their direct, active, socio-cultural interactions, within a range of classroom settings, and involving different teaching methods, with respect to the primary curricula in UK and Finland. 相似文献

Past research has extensively investigated the role of the Internet in enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the new product development (NPD) process. Although the process implications of the use of the Internet in NPD have received considerable attention in the literature, very little is written about the Internet's performance implications in NPD. Recognizing the importance of new product success and the growing trends in the use of the Internet in NPD, this paper investigates the role of the Internet in new product performance. Building on previous studies, this article develops theoretical explanations for the impacts of the use of the Internet in NPD on new product success and presents testable research propositions. A classic question faced by technology suppliers and buyers is whether to compete in the product markets or to cooperate through licensing. We address this question by examining an important, demand‐side barrier to licensing—the buyers' cost of integrating a licensed technology. We argue that this cost can be affected by suppliers' knowledge transfer capabilities, buyers' absorptive capacity, and the cospecialization between R&D and downstream activities in the buyers' industries. Following this argument and a stylized bargaining model, we hypothesize that the supplier's knowledge transfer capability stimulates licensing. Moreover, the importance of this capability increases when licensing to industries where potential buyers have weak absorptive capacity or R&D and downstream activities are cospecialized. Repeating a familiar pattern in a new way: The effect of exploitation and exploration on knowledge leverage behaviors in technology acquisitions 下载免费PDF全文
Research Summary: We identify two types of knowledge leverage behaviors undertaken by acquiring firms: integrated and independent knowledge leverage. We address how the prior exploitation or exploration orientation of acquirers influence these two modes of knowledge leverage behaviors. The degree of exploitation of acquirers promotes integrating their existing knowledge with acquired knowledge in innovative actions. In contrast, the degree of exploration of acquirers increases the likelihood that new innovations will use acquired knowledge without integrating it with their prior knowledge. In addition, the firm's prior acquisition rate moderates the relationship between the acquiring firms’ previous exploitation or exploration orientation and their knowledge leverage mode. The findings of this article suggest that pre‐acquisition innovation capabilities are distinct from but influence the post‐acquisition innovation actions. Managerial Summary: Firms often undertake acquisitions to gain access to new knowledge, but they can differ dramatically in how they leverage acquired knowledge. We show that the firm's prior innovation patterns drive this choice. Firms that have previously focused on incremental innovations in their internal innovation efforts tend to integrate acquired knowledge with their own prior knowledge. In contrast, firms that have previously pursued bold innovations tend to leverage acquired knowledge alone in new innovations. Thus, we show that firms use acquisitions as a means to extend their internal innovation patterns—firms that have focused on incremental innovations extend that with acquisitions by linking new innovations to their prior knowledge while firms that have pursued bold initiatives use acquired knowledge to move in new technology directions. 相似文献

为了研究研发团队内部知识的交互对于创意产生的机理,通过构建概念模型,研究知识螺旋对研发团队创新创意产生的影响,并分析内部社会资本的调节效应。采用结构方程模型和分层线性分析,基于274份样本的实证研究表明:一方面,知识螺旋显著积极影响研发团队创新创意产生,并且知识表出化、知识结合化、知识内在化及知识社会化分别积极影响创新创意产生;另一方面,内部社会资本不同维度在知识螺旋与创新创意产生关系中的调节效应各不相同,结构社会资本的调节效应并不显著,而认知社会资本和关系社会资本显著正向调节知识螺旋对创新创意产生的影响。根据研究结果,提出促进研发团队创意产生的建议。 相似文献

Extant research has largely ignored empirically examining how information technology (IT) affects new product effectiveness. Using the knowledge-based theory as a foundation, this study examines if, and how, particular IT tools used in the discovery, development, and commercialization phases of the new product development (NPD) process influence NPD effectiveness dimensions, namely, market performance, innovativeness, and quality of a new product. Based on data collected from NPD managers in the US and Canada, the findings indicate that specific IT tools contribute to various measures of new product effectiveness differently. Moreover, the results show the positive effect of these IT tools in different phases of the NPD process. This suggests that with regard to NPD, a decompositional approach that examines the role of IT within each phase of the NPD process is best. Based on these findings, the authors discuss theoretical and managerial implications of the study and suggest paths for future research. Managerially, some interesting results of our study are that decision support systems, file transfer protocols, and concept testing tools would significantly improve NPD effectiveness regardless of the phase they are used. 相似文献

Drawing on the resource-based view (RBV) of the firm and institutional theory, the authors propose and test an integrated model in an industrial marketing context that expands the boundaries of the RBV to incorporate institutional factors pertaining to societal and political issues. The rationale for taking such an integrated approach stems from the knowledge that firm performance can be explained better by incorporating not only the inability of managers to take particular actions but also their reluctance or unwillingness to pursue those behaviors. The authors develop an integrated model that tests (1) the direct effect of marketing institutional factors on the development of marketing RBV factors and (2) the moderating role of marketing institutional factors on the performance effect of marketing RBV factors. The empirical results indicate general support for the hypotheses, and this research provides several implications for broadening the scope of the RBV in marketing by underscoring how fit between marketing resources and the context in which those resources are deployed affects firm performance. 相似文献
