This study integrates the Porter's five forces and resource-based approach measuring U.S. hotel performance. The results show that hotels with the advantage of low customer bargaining power and low threat of new hotel entrants exhibit the strong human resource and information technology (IT) strategies. In contrast, hotels with the advantage over existing competitors do not exhibit any significant competitiveness of brand image, human resource, and IT strategies. This dues to different hotels define competitors with various criteria such as proximity and price. Competitive human resource and IT strategies indicate the increase of hotel performance, while competitive brand image strategy has no influence on hotel performance. The competitiveness of brand image strategy may overlap with implementing human resource and IT strategies.

This study investigates the factors influencing the adoption of information technology (IT) in the hotel industry, specifically in Morocco, a developing country. Our research model incorporates the following four constructs: organizational characteristics, individual characteristics, perceived benefits, and external factors. For this aim, a questionnaire was developed and sent to the general managers of hotels in Morocco to collect data and verify the research hypotheses. A sample size of 233 hotels and riads was used. The hypotheses were tested using a partial least squares approach. The results of the analysis reveal that external factors (i.e., competitive pressure, customer pressure, supplier pressure, and government support) have the strongest effects on the adoption of IT, the individual characteristics and the benefits that hotel managers perceive they will get from IT adoption are also important, while the organizational characteristics have no significant impact. The theoretical and managerial implications of these results are discussed.

Investments in information technology (IT) by the hotel sector are becoming increasingly important. However, it is necessary to analyse the extent to which IT contributes to hotels being ‘agile’ in responding to changes in the environment. The paper analyses the mediating and moderating role of IT capability in the relationship between IT uses and hotel agility. Results demonstrate the mediating role of IT capability, confirming IT uses affect organisational agility not only directly but also indirectly by improving the ability to manage technological resources. However, the role of IT capability as a moderator is not confirmed in this research. Such findings provide guidance to hotel managers to improve IT management and applications, suggesting future lines of research.

This paper aims to review past literature on hotel location models and evaluate the state of the art, as well as set out future directions. This study divides hotel location models into three major categories: theoretical models, empirical models, and operational models. Four theoretical hotel location models are reviewed and discussed, including the tourist-historic city model, the mono-centric model, the agglomeration model, and the multi-dimensional model. Based on previous literature, six empirical models and three operational models of hotel location are elaborated. Furthermore, some challenges related to hotel location studies are discussed, and future research directions are provided. In particular, we advocate the development of more sophisticated hotel location models and the use of Geographic Information System (GIS) in hotel location analysis.

Tourism literature has presented the effects of leadership style on staff efficiency yet few have examined the causal relationship between leadership style and newcomer outcomes at the hotel workplace context. This study examined the underlying mechanism regarding how transformational leadership can facilitate hotel newcomers to exhibit better performance and retention. Using the structural equation model, this study tested research hypotheses using valid data collected from 234 hotel newcomers with their supervisors from 63 tourist hotels rated above four-star in Taiwan. Based on emotion in feedback system theory, this study noted that hotel newcomers displayed higher supervisor-triggered positive affect due to the transformational leadership of their supervisors. In turn, this led to newcomers' high performance and motivation to continue working. Adapting social exchange theory, this study found that transformational leadership has led to the development of a higher perceived supervisor support, which facilitated better performance among newcomers at hotel organizations.

ABSTRACT

This research investigates the role of Pygmalion leadership and the influences of employees’ trust in a leader, trust in an organization, and job engagement on task performance in the hotel industry. Through examining Pygmalion leadership, trust, and engagement in the literature, this research establishes and tests a model to identify the interrelation among four dimensions of Pygmalion leadership (e.g., climate, output, input, and feedback), trust in a leader, trust in an organization, job engagement, and task performance. Using data collected from hotel employees, this study finds that climate, output, and feedback are critical for nurturing two dimensions of trust that enhance job engagement and task performance.

During the past decade, information technology (IT) has significantly changed the way the hotel industry controls and manages operations. While many technologies have been utilized, some newer technologies have emerged in the literature and in practice, and many of them impact the hotel's security. The purpose of this study is to understand how hotels with different service levels are currently using these technologies, and if having an internal IT department and sufficient IT budget impacts the use of these technologies. Among the results, this study identified a gap between hoteliers’ understanding of IT budget adequacy and the adequacy of installed IT security systems. The results also showed that luxury properties were significantly more likely to employ adequate IT security systems than other service levels.

Performance evaluation is an important issue for managers, since it can be used as a reference in decision making with regard to budget distribution and/or performance improvement for business units. This study modifies the data envelopment analysis model to evaluate the performance of an enterprise, and shows that we can utilize the available outputs of the modified model to easily calculate the efficiencies of business units. In addition, an efficiency evaluation of a hotel chain is carried out through a literature review and the use of experts’ opinions to determine the measurement factors, and several managerial insights are discussed.

Building on agency theory and signaling theory, this study investigated the psychological mechanism of how empowerment impacts hotel frontline employees' self-esteem, perceived trust, and OCBs performed toward both internal and external customers. Using a longitudinal research design with data collected via three waves, the results supported that three out of four dimensions of empowerment had significant and positive influence on employees' self-esteem and perceived trust, both of which are significant predictors for three types of OCBs. The study makes important contributions to literature and suggests that hotel employees feeling empowered can enhance their overall wellness while contributing to their OCB performances. Thus, empowerment should be properly used as a strategy to facilitate employees’ contextual performance.

The impacts of cultural values on technology acceptance at national level have been investigated by previous studies, but not at individual level. Hence, the research question of the present study is what are the impacts of cultural values at individual level on technology acceptance? The detailed objective is to investigate the impacts of cultural values at individual level on the extended technology acceptance model by considering technology readiness. A research framework was developed, and the technology acceptance model was extended from the perspective of hotel employees. Results showed that highlighting long-term benefits of hotel technology such as workload reduction and performance enhancement can be considered to improve the perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. In addition, introducing a new hotel technology under a less masculine cultural environment can greatly help hotel employees minimize their discomfort. Accordingly, an effective and successful hotel technology can be achieved.

This study aims to better understand how one particular personal capacity—psychological resilience—may help consumers adapt to the ‘new normal’ provoked by the COVID-19 pandemic in the hotel context, which is characterized by high uncertainty. We conducted a quantitative empirical study among consumers of hotel services, which showed that their psychological resilience has a negative effect on their perceived health risk and emotional risk. This negative effect on risk helps increase tourist intention to return to consuming hotel services despite the on-going pandemic. The findings are of value to the literature and the professional sector alike, as they demonstrate both relationships jointly for the first time. The work can help hotel firms to design more effective strategies for approaching customers in the ‘new normal’.

Large-scale events are opportunities for hotels to generate revenue. The literature has attested positive effects of events on hotel performance. However, while large-demand events are associated with room rate increases, hotel operation types may play a critical role in this “event-hotel performance” relationship. Drawing on the resource-based view theory, the chain value model and the theory of strategic groups, we hypothesize that independent and franchised hotels outperform chain-owned/managed hotels when events are held. The empirical application on over 950,000 observations between 2014 and 2019 shows that while chain-owned/managed hotels generally outperform independent and franchised hotels, this situation reverses in the presence of events. This result extends the resource-based view theory and the value chain model by including the short/long-term and corporate/property paradigm in the hotel industry.

This study uses panel regression tests to examine the response of hotel performance to international tourism development and crisis events in Taiwan. Hotel performance measures are revenue (revenue per available room and occupancy rate), profitability (return on assets and return on equity) and stock performance. The crises were the earthquake on September 21, 1999 (the 9/21 earthquake), the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 in the US (the 9/11 terrorist attacks) and the outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome on April 22, 2003 (the SARS outbreak). This study makes four major contributions. First, test results confirm that international tourism development (ITD), proxied by the growth of total inbound tourist arrivals, has a more direct influence on hotel sales and profitability than it does on hotel stock performance. Second, this study identifies that the absence of a strong tie between ITD and hotel stock returns that was found in previous studies is due to the time-varying discount rate caused by investors’ changing expectations for the prospect of future cash flows from holding hotel stocks. Third, this study finds new evidence that while the poor performance of hotel stocks caused by the 9/21 earthquake and the 9/11 terrorist attacks was attributed to the loss of hotel sales revenue, the adverse effect of the SARS outbreak on hotel stock returns is attributed not only to decreased hotel sales revenue but also to the increased discount rate. Lastly, this study is the first to investigate whether the response of hotel stock returns to ITD depends on the state of economy and concludes that the response of hotel stock performance to ITD in business cycle contraction is statistically different from that in business cycle expansion. Further, although the influence of ITD on hotel stock performance is still irrelevant during expansion periods, ITD can significantly enhance hotel stock returns during contraction periods.

This article addresses the questions of how hotel managers perceive the impact of information technology (IT) on hotel service operations, particularly transaction costs, and whether its impact on these costs affects the decision-making framework. A multiple case study approach using a two-stage interview process was adopted. This comprised a closed, fixed-response questionnaire administered to a group of managers followed by a standardized, open-ended interview intended to capture both objective and subjective views. Although the managers objectively identified a positive impact for IT, their subjective views indicated that this impact is only superficial. This gap points to the existence of bounded rationality in managerial decision making about state-of-the-art IT systems.

The purpose of this study is to synthesize the international empirical evidence concerning the impacts of workforce diversity (as mediated by management and a number of other organizational and environmental factors) on hotel performance. To clarify the complexity in the studied relations, we develop a conceptual framework and consolidate the key (qualitative and quantitative) evidence, which we discuss in the context of the wider human resource management hospitality literature. The findings indicate that the aforementioned factors are often neglected and that workforce diversity unmediated by management can have negative impacts on hotel performance. On the basis of the critically reviewed evidence we conclude that staffing initiatives, and especially recruitment policies, have the widest reaching positive effects on hotel performance. Respective policy implications are provided cautioning the need for further research in most of the above areas.

Hotel firms have increasingly recognized that branding strategies constitute a strategic weapon to secure a competitive edge in the global hotel industry. To extend current understanding of hotel brand management, this study investigates the role of customer brand identification in the formation of hotel brand loyalty. This study contributes to the literature by establishing that customer brand identification is an indirect predictor of hotel brand loyalty through its three known antecedents. Results suggest that while the customer may identify with a particular hotel brand, hotel loyalty still depends on the customer's positive evaluation of factors relating to service experiences. However, as consumers’ identification with a hotel brand affects their evaluation of these factors, hoteliers should leverage customers’ brand identification to engender positive consumer evaluation of the hotel brand and, ultimately, increase brand loyalty.

This paper develops a conceptual framework that describes the impact of information technology (IT) on service management and transaction costs in full service hotel firms. It details how IT would help such firms to lower operations-related transaction costs. Further, the underpinnings of how IT would impact service management in full service hotel firms is discussed more specifically from a customer satisfaction point of view while focusing on two aspects, i.e. managing customer delight and the customer's role as a co-producer. Propositions are developed and a discussion on the impact of IT on firm profitability from a transaction cost perspective ensues while concluding with managerial implications.

The purpose of this study was to conduct an exploratory investigation of the relationship between strategic planning and business performance. A multidimensional model of 11 variables was formulated after a review of the strategic planning-performance literature. Data were obtained from 63 hotel units representing eight quoted hotel companies, and various planning-performance relationships were examined. The results indicated that the key planning characteristics of throughness, sophistication, participation, and formality were positive, and in most cases significantly related, to seven indicators of business performance.
