This study reports the results of an opinion survey of a Malaysian managerial subelite, potential future business and government leaders. Their responses to propositions put forth in a detailed questionnaire indicate that they have values conforming to those associated with Western bureaucratic society. The results of this 1982 survey are discussed under the topics of attitudes toward women, attitudes toward business and religion, station in life, and peer trust levels.Bernard Sarachek is with the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Drawing on the relational and knowledge-based views of competitive advantage, this study links leaders?? social ties and knowledge acquisition capability to competitive advantage of a firm. Specifically, it posits that leaders?? business ties and government ties have differential effects on firm competitive advantage. It further posits that the effect of leaders?? business ties on firm competitive advantage will be positively moderated by knowledge acquisition capability, and the effect of leaders?? government ties on firm competitive advantage will be negatively moderated by knowledge acquisition capability. The hypotheses are tested based on a survey of 386 firms in China. The results provide support for the hypotheses.  相似文献

在瞬息万变的国际经营环境中,企业国际化面临着诸多挑战.受欢迎程度不高、中方员工的友善行为不被理解、海外履行社会责任效果不明显等成为中国企业国际化过程中遇到的棘手问题.中国企业公共关系管理存在以下三大问题:海外的管理模式不利于文化融合;忽视除政府之外其他利益相关者的利益诉求;不善于与当地媒体交往、缺乏与公众的双向沟通.中国企业要想克服海外发展的“瓶颈”,就必须从利益相关者的角度着手,加强公共关系的研究并准确把握与利益相关方的相处原则,通过双向对等的沟通和交流,建立起亲善友好、负责任的良好形象.  相似文献

Understanding the work values of the current and future workforce is essential for designing a human resource management system that attracts, motivates, and retains talent. This study provides an updated, in-depth analysis of the work values of the next generation of business leaders in the commercial centers of China, Japan, and Korea. Although previous research has often clustered these countries together and labeled them Confucian Asia, survey results from more than 700 respondents reveal striking differences in work values across countries. The Chinese are more individualistic and career oriented, whereas the Japanese are more risk averse and work oriented, and the Koreans are often somewhere in-between. We argue that the value differences can be largely explained by different economic influences in these three countries. This study enhances our understanding of crossvergence theory by distinguishing economic influence in the economic development stage, economic growth, and inward foreign direct investments. While these economic indicators might be related, their influences on work values could be conflicting. The findings suggest that that each economic indicator has a unique effect on the development of work values.  相似文献

Using data from a survey of over 700 Americans, we sought to measure and investigate the nature of citizen’s political ideologies in relation to food. Results reveal that a majority of respondents can be classified as “food statists,” desiring more government action in the realm food and agricultural relative to the status quo. People’s ideologies with regard to food were multidimensional, falling along lines related to food health and quality, food safety, and farm subsidies. Respondents were most in favor of additional government action related to food safety. Food ideology was related to conventional measures of political ideology with, for example, more liberal respondents desiring more government involvement in food than more conservative respondents, but the relationship was far from determinative, suggesting food ideology represents a unique construct in its own right.  相似文献

This paper examines the role various environmental factors play in shaping short-term management behaviour in the context of the business contract system in China. Seven government officials and ten senior firm managers were interviewed in the city of Chongqing. It was found that dysfunctional behaviour displays itself mainly in the form of inappropriate performance measures and widespread manipulation of data. The study also demonstrates that most management problems originated from the environment over which the firm had little control rather than derived from the internal organisation of the firm. Environmental factors like uncertainties, inflation, government systems and capability of government officials were regarded as major determinants of the short-term behaviour.  相似文献

This paper examines the reality of issues surrounding e-commerce and logistics in China today. Interviews were conducted with government, business and academic leaders in a major Chinese coastal city. From these interviews, the magnitude of nine major e-commerce and logistics challenges was investigated. Based on the scope of the problems and the scale of potential solutions, the various issues are characterized as basic, manageable or intractable. Conclusions are made about the challenges to be found both today and in the future of e-commerce and logistics in China.  相似文献

This paper reports the results of a study that examined how firms can establish successful business relationships with Chinese suppliers. Its aim is to explore salient characteristics of the nature of buyer supplier relationships with the emergence of China as a dominant economic power. Two surveys have been conducted that investigated several factors that inhibit and enable effective supplier relationship management (SRM) between organisations sourcing from China and Chinese suppliers, and explored the impact of cultural characteristics of Chinese management on the nature and performance of supplier relationships. The research highlights the importance of the social control aspect of governance structure of supplier relationships and stresses that both social and formal control mechanisms should be implemented for more effective relationships with Chinese suppliers. It also demonstrates the need for companies to recognise the importance of guanxi and several cultural characteristics of the Chinese style of management in SRM and advocates the need for the development of a hybrid Sino-Japanese and global supplier relationship management paradigm that incorporates elements from the existing SRM models. It generates insights into how the cultural context of emerging markets affects the nature of business relationships and generates a research agenda in the field of supply chain management that can explore the development of new paradigms in supplier relationships management. The main theoretical argument put forward centres on the need for the development of a new global supplier relationship management paradigm that will take into account the cultural elements of the Chinese society.  相似文献

Advocacy campaigns are central to unions’ efforts to impact labour rights beyond unionized workplaces. Social media and on-the-ground campaign dynamics are intimately related. Thus, if unions can become leaders on social media, they could have more impact on campaign framing and mobilizing. Drawing on primary data and applying a sequential mixed method, we analyse unions’ ability to emerge as opinion leaders in Twitter dialogues on the Fight for $15 (FF$15) campaign. We track FF$15-related activities of Twitter profiles over seven months and compare union actions to those of others along three dimensions: level of activity, prevalence of tweeting versus retweeting and endorsement within FF$15 community and in the Twitter universe. Regression results show unions prefer advancing their own ideas over supporting those of others, and their messages are more endorsed than others’ messages in the Twitter universe. In-depth interviews and a focus group reveal that while their actions are slow and conservative, unions can count on internal support and institutional reputation to gain leadership. The article concludes by noting the implications of the findings for unions’ strategies to become opinion leaders on social media.  相似文献

Board turnover in Taiwan’s public firms: An empirical study   总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0  
Using a data set of 220 Taiwanese public firms with 2,200 observations over a ten-year period representing Taiwan’s economic takeoff period in the late 1990s, as well as six follow-up interviews conducted with top managers several years hence, this research examines the propensity of an important change variable for firms: the turnover of boards of directors. Specifically, it examines the relationship between board turnover and the organization’s environment, firm performance, and the largest shareholder’s control during a key period of economic transition and growth for Taiwan. The results show that substantial changes in board composition, though still not especially common in Taiwan, do occur, even in closely held companies. Turnover in the board is negatively related to the largest shareholder’s control power as well as firm performance. Board changes however, are not related to the environmental munificence and dynamism. These results are rather consistent with related research on firms in ethnic Chinese communities which suggests that top management and board turnover while not common, does sometimes occur, and more recent institutional and industrial change in Taiwan is likely encouraging further governance reform. This has implications for important facets of firm governance and change, as well as expanding our knowledge about firms domiciled in an ethnic Chinese community, particularly during times of economic transition and growth. Follow-up interviews with four top managers from our sample, along with one consultant and one government official in Taiwan provided additional confirmation and clarification of our results.  相似文献

Research summary : Emerging markets are characterized by underdeveloped institutions and frequent environmental shifts. Yet, they also contain many firms that have survived over generations. How are firms in weak institutional environments able to persist over time? Motivated by 69 interviews with leaders of emerging market firms with histories spanning generations, we combine induction and deduction to propose reputation as a meta‐resource that allows firms to activate their conventional resources. We conceptualize reputation as consisting of prominence, perceived quality, and resilience, and develop a process model that illustrates the mechanisms that allow reputation to facilitate survival in ways that persist over time. Building on research in strategy and business history, we thus shed light on an underappreciated strategic construct (reputation) in an undertheorized setting (emerging markets) over an unusual period (the historical long run). Managerial summary : Why are some firms able to persistently survive in challenging, uncertain, and underdeveloped business environments? To explore this question, we analyze in‐depth interviews with leaders of emerging market firms that have survived over decades and even centuries. We find that firm reputation is a key strategic driver, and propose new ideas about the ways through which reputation facilitates survival. We elaborate how a favorable reputation allows a firm to more fully utilize its existing resources by decreasing uncertainty. We also propose that reputation has offensive and defensive properties that make it valuable to firms during both positive and negative economic cycles. Finally, we discuss why a reputation‐based source of competitive advantage is hard to imitate, and outline three general approaches for building reputation. In China, the phenomenon of government officials entering business (xiahai)??government officials leave government organizations to enter into private-owned enterprises (POEs)??gives rise to an intriguing question: Why do POEs invite the participation of former government officials? Based on a sample of 100 Chinese POEs, our findings indicate that both the mean number of years of top management team??s (TMT) governmental experience and the number of top managers with governmental experience in a TMT are positively related to a POE??s political networking, which in turn contributes to POE performance. By doing so, this study adds governmental experience to the literature on TMT experience, and identifies the mechanism of governmental experience effect. Overall, we provide an underlying mechanism of the phenomenon of government officials entering business.  相似文献

This paper uses grounded theory to explore internal (intrafirm) conflicts in the formulation of business–government strategies by corporations with diversified business units. We find that three types of conflict exist within firms: conflict over proactive policy positions advocated by the firm (prepolicy issues), conflict over reactive internal distribution of compliance costs/benefits (postpolicy issues), and representational conflict (e.g., individual business units vs. corporate representation in the external public policy arena). We also develop a grounded framework for organizational structures for conflict resolution in the strategic management of government relations, based upon our case studies, and find a relationship between particular structures and the degree of diversification. Courses on the management of innovation and technology seldom treat government technology policies, and the issues they pose for business management. This is unfortunate. In many fields business has a big stake in government technology policies. They can help business, be a waste of money, or actually hurt business. 工作已经通过网络渗入家庭,员工面临严重的工作—家庭冲突,影响组织绩效和生活质量。工作—家庭平衡作为企业家庭伦理理论的核心问题已成为制度设计的中心问题。对工作—家庭平衡制度安排的理论与实证研究发现,工作—家庭平衡还没有成为政府、企业和员工的共享信念,制度设计失去社会价值观基础;弹性工作制是有效的正式企业制度;家庭照顾福利是无效的正式企业制度;经理须持之以恒支持员工平衡工作—家庭需要、控制因享用工作—家庭平衡福利而带来的负面职业生涯后果。两者是有效的非正式制度安排。据此提出的政策建议是:政府要在全社会倡导、培育以工作—家庭平衡为核心的企业家庭伦理管理哲学、提供家庭照顾福利作为公共制度供给;企业进行系统的组织文化改造;员工培育照顾家庭的应得权利感。  相似文献

Based on extensive field research in China during 2005–2010, this article aims to explore the determinants of unionization in the Chinese context. We find that managerial strategies toward union organizing and functioning have been critical in determining unionization outcomes in Chinese enterprises. While various environment pressures may impose critical constraints on these strategies, managerial industrial relations ideologies are central in shaping these strategies when environment pressures barely exist or are bearable by management. Our study makes the first effort in exploring industrial relations ideologies in China and contributes to better understanding of unionization in the Chinese workplace.  相似文献

Overseas Chinese entrepreneurs in East Asia have achieved notable success in a number of traditional, slow growth industries. This success has been ascribed to distinctive aspects of Chinese business culture that favor alacrity, adaptability, networking, and close control of firm operations. Recently, some have suggested that the same characteristics that have promoted these firms' success in slower growth sectors may hinder firm success in faster growth sectors of the economy. To explore this proposition, we conducted in-depth interviews with forty-one entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, and government officials all working with fast growth entrepreneurial firms in East Asia. The results suggest that, in general, Overseas Chinese entrepreneurial firms also follow many of the traditional business practices associated with Overseas Chinese firms. Most venture capitalists and government officials in the sample expressed concern that these practices are hindering the building of firms that can be taken public and experience the high growth consistent with vibrant entrepreneurial firms. The results also showed that the Overseas Chinese entrepreneurs sampled are aware that some of these characteristics may be creating constraints to faster growth and, at the behest of venture capitalists and government officials, are sometimes making the changes thought necessary to create faster growth firms.  相似文献

This study adopted a structural approach to examine the formation and characteristics of Chinese business networks via interlocking directorates during a stage in China’s institutional transitions. Analyses of the network structures of 949 listed companies revealed that: (1) Chinese business networks were smaller in scale and lower in density than their Western counterparts; (2) no nationwide network with a dominant center existed; (3) interlock occurred mainly in the form of smaller business groups which tended to be regionally fragmented; (4) ties were more prevalent among industrial peers than with financial institutions; and (5) government ownership was predominant. These findings therefore deepen our understanding about the pattern and extent of business interlock in China. Not only do these findings provide substantive implications to the notion and dimensionality of guanxi, but they also offer inspiration to managers and policy makers by illuminating key characteristics of network structure. Laying these foundations shall pave the way for future research in the structure of Chinese business networks.

Bing Ren   (PhD, The Chinese University of Hong Kong) is an associate professor in the Department of Management, School of Business at Nankai University, China. Her main research areas include Chinese business network studies, institutional transition and firm strategic choices, entrepreneurship and corporate governance issues in China. Currently, she is undertaking two research projects funded by the natural science foundation of China. The first one relates to the intercorporate network of interlocking directorates and its influence on firm strategies during China’s institutional transition. The second relates to a legitimacy perspective of new venture growth and creation in China. Kevin Au   (PhD, University of British Columbia) is an associate professor of management at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and serves as an associate director for the MBA programme and Centre for Entrepreneurship. His research interests span across micro and macro issues in global management, social network, entrepreneurship, and research methodology. He serves on the editorial boards of Asia Pacific Journal of Management and Journal of Organizational Behavior and conducts consulting projects for business and government organizations. This is Professor Au’s fourth contribution to APJM. Thomas A. Birtch   is a Senior Research Fellow (Centre for Economics and Policy) at the University of Cambridge. He has held an academic appointment at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, visited universities in Asia, Europe, and North America, and has affiliations with several research centres, including at MIT, Cambridge, and The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has also held directorships and senior management positions in large scale organizations and government spanning three continents and consulted in over 30 countries. His current research interests include the performance of individuals, organizations, and markets, the transferability of management practices, FDI and post-merger integration strategy, rewards and incentives, entrepreneurship and innovative organizations, and business in China.
