This paper compares the job-related need fulfillment of academic accountants in 1994 with that reported nearly a quarter of a century earlier by Carpenter and Strawser (1971. A study of the job satisfaction of academic accountants. The Accounting Review (July), 46, 509-518). We also investigate whether job dissonance (dissatisfaction resulting from unmet needs) foreshadowed turnover of faculty respondents during the 2-year period following our survey. Results suggest that fulfillment for most job-related needs was lower for 1994 accounting educators than for their 1970 counterparts. Within the 1994 sample, certain perceptual differences were attributed to both race (black versus non-black) and gender. Regardless of demographics, however, reported job dissonance in 1994 was strongly associated with subsequent job turnover, particularly among assistant professors. Taking steps to reduce or eliminate job dissonance is arguably more important in today's environment than in 1994. Accounting faculty members today enjoy a greater number of opportunities and thus can more readily remove themselves from situations that create perceived job dissonance.  相似文献

We examine the research productivity of academic accountants at Canadian universities for the 11‐year period 1990‐2000. Our analysis is based on the “top‐ten” ranked refereed journals in accounting, auditing, and taxation, as documented by Brown and Huefner (1994). We first provide an overview of the importance of publishing in highly ranked accounting journals for individual academics, departments, and business faculties. We then provide details of the proportion of articles published in each of these journals by academics from Canadian universities; the type of research published in each journal (auditing, financial accounting, managerial accounting, and taxation); and details of editorial board service. Our results indicate that even at the most productive Canadian university (in terms of “top‐ten” publications), faculty members publish (on average) approximately one article every seven years. Six Canadian universities have faculty members with, on average, more than one article in “top‐ten” journals every 10 years. We also provide results of analyses that rank each Canadian university, after controlling for the relative quality of each journal, using impact factors published by the Social Science Citation Index. In addition, statistics are provided with regard to the 15 most productive researchers, in terms of “top‐ten” publications, in the 11‐year period. Finally, in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the Canadian Academic Accounting Association, we examine the productivity of academic accountants at Canadian universities over the past 25 years by combining our results with those reported by Richardson and Williams (1990).  相似文献

In this study, we assess issues faced by accountants in implementing Statement of Financial Accounting Standard (SFAS) 143, Accounting for Asset Retirement Obligations (AROs) and Financial Interpretation Number (FIN) 47, which was issued to clarify accounting for conditional AROs. The assessments were made by accountants of companies belonging to the Edison Electric Institute (EEI) since the EEI originally initiated the Financial Accounting Standards Boards’ (FASB’s) ARO agenda item. The findings suggest that SFAS 143 and FIN 47 have provided accountants with increased clarity for ARO identification and have resulted in more meaningful recognition. In addition, more liabilities are reported even though it can be argued that ceteris paribus management will choose the method that minimizes the amount of the liability. Overall, the findings suggest that the FASB’s guidance on asset retirement obligations improved the reporting model and their implementation guidance improved companies’ application of the rules.  相似文献

Recent graduates from accounting doctoral programs were surveyed about their perceived preparation for specific teaching characteristics espoused by the Accounting Education Change Commission AECC (Accounting Education Change Commission). [(1993). Evaluating and rewarding effective teaching: position statement no. five. Issues in Accounting Education 8(2), 436-439.] Respondents also provided information on specific teacher training methods currently being used by doctoral programs, by academic employer departments, and by individual faculty. Overall, our results suggest that most faculty responding to the survey feel inadequately prepared in all AECC-espoused teaching characteristics. Further, most endeavors to develop skills reflecting these characteristics appear to rely on efforts of the individual, instead of from systematic efforts of doctoral programs or academic employers. That is, respondents generally indicate that training received in their doctoral programs is a relatively minor source of preparation for current teaching responsibilities, while investments in self-training have had the greatest impact on their preparation for teaching. Respondents also indicate that doctoral programs, academic employers, and individual efforts should share more equally in the responsibility to develop “teaching scholarship.”  相似文献

This paper addresses recent critiques of the accounting profession by the authors in Critical Perspectives on Accounting(CPA) (Vol. 9, No. 5, 1998); Briloff (1990), Briloff (1993), Briloff (1994); and Francis (1994), from Jean Baudrillard’s poststructural semiotics perspective. Relying on his phases of the image and orders of simulacra schemes, the paper concludes that (1) theCPA authors merely reiterate arguments and Whiggish remedies that have been around for a long time, (2) the profession no longer has any sacred covenant with society, (3) the Income sign produced by accountants no longer refers to nor has any rapport with any real referent, and (4) that auditing working papers are simply mirror images of other mirror images. The paper then draws out some of the possibilities of poststructuralist analyses for revitalizing the Critical Accounting project. In response to Moore’s (1991) observation that the project is “politically conservative" and has “placed nothing at stake," our analysis manifests the stake as no more nor less than the profession’s near-monopoly on accounting services.  相似文献

This paper compares perceptions of organisational characteristics and their relationship to job satisfaction dimensions of US and Australian accountants. Data were collected from accountants in an international accounting firm on perceptions of job satisfaction dimensions, autonomy, feedback on performance and access to job-related information. Given the cultural similarities of the two countries and the use of a single firm, differences were not expected. Results indicated that accountants in the two countries had similar perceptions of the organisational variables and similar levels of satisfaction. However, there were extensive differences in how the organisational variables related to the satisfaction dimensions.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of an investigation of stress in public accounting, using a national sample of certified public accountants. The relationship between a set of predictor variables (organizational stressors and work/home conflict) and a set of criterion variables (job-related tension, job dissatisfaction, and propensity to leave public accounting) was analyzed using canonical correlation analysis. Job-related tension was associated with heavy work demands; job dissatisfaction and intension to leave were associated with slow career progress, unfulfilling jobs, and unclear job objectives.  相似文献

This article examines risk-taking in the job search process and whether women and men who are part of a dual-career couple experience different work-related consequences for taking such risks. Specifically, we explore how the decision to reveal dual-career status in the academic job search process impacts faculty members’ later promotions, productivity, pay, mobility, and career-related goals. We draw on a sample of roughly 230 faculty in seven US universities who were part of a dual-career couple at their time of hire. We find that risk-taking during the job search impacts some career outcomes, and does so similarly for women and men. Members of a dual-career couple who took the risk of revealing their dual-career status before a job offer reported significantly more positive career experiences related to promotion and productivity than those who did not reveal their status during the job search. Only the salary outcome was negatively related to revealing dual-career status in the job search process. Because of the nature of academic hiring, revealing a risky status during the job search process may ameliorate barriers to employment. Our study has important implications for research and the development of academic dual-career policies that make dual-career hiring more transparent.  相似文献

In this paper, we argue that accounting curricula should be expanded to cover the topic of real options. Our argument relies on reference to the [American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) (1999) (Core Competency Framework, New York, NY: AICPA <http://ceae.aicpa.org/Resources/Education+and+Curriculum+Development/Core+Competency+Framework+and+Educational+Competency+Assessment+Web+Site/> Accessed 21.08.08], the framework for curriculum change espoused by [Arya, A., Fellingham, J. Competency profiles for management accounting practice and practitioners. New York, NY: International Federation of Accountants], a global capital-budgeting “best practices statement” [International Federation of Accountants (IFAC), (2008). International good practice guidance: Project appraisal using discounted cash flow. New York, NY: International Federation of Accountants], current specifications of the CMA exam [Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), (2008). S., & Sack, R. J. (2000). Accounting education: Charting the course through a perilous future. Accounting education series, Vol. 16. Sarasota, FL: American Accounting Association]. We make special reference to the linkage of the topic of real options to two broad educational goals: decision-modeling and risk analysis. Existing resources that accounting faculty can use to incorporate real options into the curriculum are limited. As a response, we provide an extended example that accounting educators can use to cover the topic of real options. This example uses a set of binomial trees (one for cash inflows and another for cash outflows). The step-by-step approach presented in this paper allows students without a technical/mathematical background to extend discounted-cash-flow (DCF) decision models (e.g., NPV) to incorporate real options that are embedded in proposed investment projects.  相似文献

Immediately after WWII, unlike statisticians’ reforms, accountants failed to establish the Cabinet-controlled Accounting Committee and Accounting Law which were originally envisaged as the key to successful “Accountics”: the management of the socio-economy through standardized accounting (Part I). Nevertheless, July 1948 is regarded as the beginning of Japan’s accounting revolution, as academic accountants accomplished a series of fundamental reforms. Part II examines the process through which micro financial systems were swiftly developed as a microfoundation of the new “democratic” socio-economy. First, academics implemented new accounting for large companies in order to dilute the Zaibatsu- and Imperial-centred regime; followed by censored and standardized accounting education for SMEs and the public in order to change the public perception of the roles of businesses in society. The foci of examination are the political manoeuvres of reformers, the consequences of new accounting, and pragmatic philosophy of the academics in action. Towards the end of the paper, some implications of this history are considered in relation to the impacts of the IAS/IFRS on today’s international socio-economy.  相似文献

In September 1993, the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) and the Financial Executives Institute (FEI) commissioned the Gary Siegel Organization (hereafter GSO) to carry out a study that was ultimately titled, “What Corporate America Wants in Entry-level Accountants.” The GSO employed a research approach that included focus group interviews, telephone interviews, and mail questionnaires. Central to the GSO study is an assessment of accounting knowledge and skills areas (AKSAs). AKSAs are 15 broad accounting knowledge and skills areas selected from the content specifications of professional accounting examinations and from major topic areas taught in college accounting courses. The research results were reported at the Annual Meeting of the American Accounting Association in August, 1994, and published as a monograph as well as in Management Accounting.According to a joint IMA/FEI position statement, “The results show that Corporate America believes universities are doing a less than adequate job of preparing people for entrylevel work in management accounting” (p. 25). Consistent with these conclusions, the IMA/FEI position statement continues, “University accounting programs must be restructured to respond to the needs of the corporate customer.” (p. 25).As a way of measuring the service quality gap with respect to the AKSAs, the GSO apparently tried to adapt a perceptions-minus-expectations research methodology used to measure service quality referred to as SERVQUAL. Unfortunately, the GSO study contains serious methodological flaws. These methodological flaws call into question the conclusions drawn from the study. Accounting educators and administrators need to exercise caution in using the GSO study results as the basis for wholesale restructuring of the accounting curriculum. At the least, additional studies ought to be made to either confirm or disconfirm the results reported by the GSO study. In this paper, we outline a more acceptable method for using the SERVQUAL perceptions-minus-expectations framework.  相似文献

Abstract

The International Accounting Education Standards Board (IAESB) places a strong emphasis on individual professionals taking responsibility for their Continuing Professional Development (CPD). On the other hand, the roles performed by professional accountants have evolved out of practical necessity to ‘best’ suit the diverse needs of business in a global economy. This diversity has meant that professional accountants are seen in highly specialised roles requiring diverse skill sets. In order to enhance the contribution of the accountant as a knowledge professional for business, it follows that CPD that leverages off an individual's experience should be designed to meet the needs of professionals across the different specialised roles within the profession. In doing so the project identifies how CPD should differ across roles and levels of organisational responsibility for accounting professionals. The study also makes a number of policy recommendations to IAESB and IFAC.  相似文献

This paper examines the impact of the antecedents and consequences of job burnout on junior accountants' turnover intentions. A questionnaire was completed by 368 junior accountants working in public accounting firms. Our results suggest that role ambiguity, role conflict and job‐related tension are important antecedents for job burnout. Role ambiguity and role conflict initially influence employees' perceived levels of job‐related tension, and job‐related tension is associated to job burnout, which, in turn, decreases employees' levels of job satisfaction and organisational commitment. Dissatisfied and uncommitted employees are more likely to seek alternative employment.  相似文献

This review of the accounting education literature includes 291 articles and 104 instructional cases published over the 3-year period, 2010–2012, in six journals: (1) Journal of Accounting Education, (2) Accounting Education: An International Journal, (3) Advances in Accounting Education, (4) Global Perspectives on Accounting Education, (4) Issues in Accounting Education, and (6) The Accounting Educators’ Journal. This article updates prior literature reviews by organizing and summarizing recent additions to the accounting education literature. These reviews are categorized into four sections corresponding to traditional lines of inquiry: (1) curriculum, assurance of learning (AOL), and instruction; (2) educational technology; (3) faculty issues; and (4) students. Suggestions for educational research in all content areas are presented. For the first time in this series of literature reviews, we assess the data collection and empirical analysis methods and recommend adoption of more rigorous techniques moving forward. Articles presenting teaching materials and educational cases published in the same six journals during 2010–2012 are presented in an appendix, categorized by the courses for which they are appropriate.  相似文献

Publication productivity of academic accountants has been variously measured and used to rank accounting faculties as well as accounting doctoral programs. Implicit in the results of these studies is the assumption that publications are a surrogate measurement of the contribution of faculty members. This study presents evidence of the declining publication productivity of academic accountants throughout their careers and discusses some implications of this phenomenon for performance evaluation.  相似文献

Sten Jönsson’s recent book Accounting for Improvement (1996) examines organizational change processes based on several in-depth case-studies, conducted during a period of about ten years. In this review essay the arguments of the book are placed alongside recent discussions on management accounting practices, which have increasingly discovered the “hidden” potential of accounting and accountants. Jönsson’s book offers exciting insights into organizational improvement processes, which are linked to accounting in a particularly broad, “total accounting” sense. The major limitation of the book is held to be that it places accountants in the background of the analysis, perhaps reflecting problems in empirical research designs of the case-studies. As a result, the relationships and communication patterns between accountants and line personnel remain largely unexamined.  相似文献

Positive perceptions of career success are critical among accounting professionals, given their connection with performance, turnover and organisational commitment. Drawing on career stage theory, this study explores the perceptions and experiences of career success among 475 aspiring (Accounting/Finance students), 305 early career accountants (ECAs) and 165 managers/recruiters in Australia. Findings reflected both objective and subjective dimensions of career success alongside notable differences between aspiring accountants and ECAs, highlighting shifting views across the career stages of exploration and establishment. While ECAs were largely positive about their access to career success, managers/recruiters identified ways to create further opportunities for ECAs' career success.  相似文献
