Organizational Misbehavior and Management Control in China’s Public Hospitals: Doctors’ Red Packets

This paper investigates Chinese doctors’ informal payment, known as red packets, with reference to the debate on organizational misbehavior, fiddles and control. It aims to examine the internal and external factors that have contributed to the emergence of red packets in health services and the strategies of hospital management in dealing with informal payment. Analysis on the data collected from two hospitals shows that doctors’ misbehavior is influenced by health services’ funding mechanism, payment systems and corruption. More importantly, the study demonstrates the rationality of employee fiddles and management responses. Findings indicate that doctors are mainly responsible for this fiddling, unethical and illegal activity because of the financial gains acquired from patient bribery. However, doctor misbehavior remains under management’s latent control as long as hospital income generation and reputation are not severely threatened. The study contributes to the analysis of informal payment in the field of organizational studies and employment relations, with a fresh perspective offered to extend our understanding of red packets in the context of healthcare marketization reform.

Are Ethical Responses Linked to Locus of Control?

Locus of control (LOC) has received considerable attention in the psychological literature. However, there is limited research and inconclusive results reported from the research examining its potential relationship to ethical beliefs and attitudes.This research examines how the locus of control of university students (n = 671) can be linked to their ethical responses concerning academic-behavior items. Whenever the students were asked about their personal beliefs concerning the unethical nature of academic-environment behaviors, the results indicated significant differences ( 0.05) by the internal/external LOC designation on 21 of the 27 items. Because a review of the literature indicated that there might be an interaction of LOC scores, gender, and age, an analysis of variance was performed. An ANOVA was used to analyze the ethical responses using a 3-level age classification (AGECLASS) variable and a 4-level LOC/GENDER variable (INTMale, EXTMale, INTFemale, EXTFemale). Overall results indicated both AGECLASS and LOC/GENDER variables to be significant on the survey responses.     

Donate Money,but Whose? An Empirical Study of Ultimate Control Rights,Agency Problems,and Corporate Philanthropy in China

Using empirical evidence gathered from Chinese listed companies, this article explores the relationship between micro-governance mechanisms and corporate philanthropy from a corporate governance perspective. In China’s emerging market, ultimate controlling shareholders of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) are reluctant to donate their assets or resources to charitable organizations; in private enterprises (PEs) marked by more deviation in voting and cash flow rights, such donations tend to be more likely. However, the ultimate controllers in PEs refuse to donate assets or resources they control or own, which implies that corporate philanthropy by PEs comes at the cost of others, through assets or resources owned by minority shareholders. Even after devastating natural disasters such as the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the controlling shareholders continue to express reluctance to donate any assets they control. Despite widespread evidence that corporate philanthropy boosts corporate growth and profitability, these ultimate controllers indicate no intention to donate their own money as a means to improve corporate performance.

Why Do Applications Request My Contacts Data？ A Large-Scale Study on Openness and Control of User Contacts Permission in Android Mobile Applicaitons Marketplace

To understand the value of data transfer, this paper uses consumers＇ contact information in mobile application that resides in their mobile devices as a proxy to evaluate the value of user data to application developer and platform owner. Based on a data set of 567,730 Android mobile applications, our research results show that using user contacts can increase application popularity, enable developer to become more influential, and have a positive effect on developers＇ productivity when developing future applications. In addition to examining the use and access of a consumers extending contact information on their device, we broaden our research to examine the context and appropriateness of using this information in the context of privacy, and to a less extent education. We conclude our research with a summary of guidance to developers, consumerss, and platform owners in order to maintain a healthy application ecosystem.
