This study examines the role of top management team (TMT) member succession in breaking organizational inertia. We compare
the impact of two types of change in TMTs—in member number and demographic heterogeneity—on subsequent strategic reorientation
using data on the diversification activities of firms in the Japanese textile industry. Our findings suggest that executive
succession does not trigger strategic change unless succession entails change in the values and interests of executives embedded
in their demographic traits.

Government corruption and foreign stakes in international joint ventures in emerging economies 总被引:2,自引:2,他引:0
Pierre-Xavier Meschi 《Asia Pacific Journal of Management》2009,26(2):241-261
This paper analyzes the relationship between government corruption and the changes in the equity stake of foreign partners
in international joint ventures (IJVs) formed with local firms in emerging Asian economies. This relationship is defined according
to transaction cost theory. This relationship is complemented by the introduction of a moderating variable derived from organizational
learning theory: the country experience of foreign partners. This article is based on a sample of 171 European firms, which
formed IJVs in emerging Asian economies during the year 1996. Using an event history analysis, the evolution of each European
equity stake was followed-up from year 1996 to the end of the period at risk on January 2007. From the empirical results presented
in this article, some findings have been drawn on the attitudes of foreign firms toward government corruption in emerging
Asian economies. First, we showed that the government corruption is significantly related to the likelihood of foreign partners
to terminate the IJV. However, the nature of this relationship is differentiated according to the score used to measure government
corruption. The relationship is positive when using the Transparency International score and negative with the Political Risk
Services score. Second, we put into evidence that the country experience of foreign partners moderates the relationship between
government corruption and the changes in the equity stake of foreign partners in IJVs in emerging Asian economies.

Assimilation into society via academic achievement is a premise and practice that is universal in schools and school systems.
Drawing on the testimonies of technological education teachers and the sociology of knowledge literature, this narrative inquiry
research sets the stage for a critical analysis of our reliance on knowledge versus experience in western education policy
and planning. A crisp and constructive analysis of the premises school systems take for granted becomes possible, a case for
transcending limited ways of thinking about knowledge and experience is made.

Recent years have witnessed the surging of Chinese manufacturers, as China has become the world’s factory floor. This paper
presents a case study of one of the most successful manufacturers in China, the Galanz Group, now the world’s largest microwave
manufacturer. Based on theories of multinational corporations from emerging economies, the paper examines the process of Galanz’s
integration into the global market. The company has developed unique competitive strategies that have made it a great success
within China and in overseas markets. The Galanz model suggests strong strategic implications for both Chinese firms and incumbent
multinational corporations.

The influence of firm, industry and network on the corporate social performance of Japanese firms 总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
K. C. O’Shaughnessy Eric Gedajlovic Patrick Reinmoeller 《Asia Pacific Journal of Management》2007,24(3):283-303
We develop and test the thesis that corporate social performance (CSP) constitutes a socially constructed and shared strategic asset, which is not only influenced by factors specific to a firm, but also by the social performance of firms
in its industry and inter-corporate network. Using variance decomposition, we analyze data from 130 large Japanese firms and
find that both firm-specific and industry-level factors account for significant variance in CSP, but network-level factors
do not.

This article reviews major theoretical and empirical work on vertical and horizontal Japanese keiretsu. We first outline the history, characteristics, and strategic and performance implications of each type of business group.
We then discuss changes in the Japanese economy during the post-1992 Japanese economic decline and their implications for
the persistence and continued benefits of each form of inter-corporate grouping followed by a discussion of empirical findings
regarding the continued role of keiretsu in the Japanese economy. The review concludes by exploring areas of future research into the evolution of keiretsu ties and their implications.

Future research on human resource management systems in Asia 总被引:4,自引:4,他引:0
Re-emphasizing the need to examine human resource management (HRM) in context, this article builds around four themes. First,
it analyses the main issues discussed in the existing literature regarding HRM in the Asian context. Second, it highlights
the critical challenges facing HRM function in the region. Third, along with the analysis, it presents an agenda for future
research. Fourth, it presents a framework useful for highlighting the context specific nature of Asian HRM functions and the
main determinants of HRM policies and practices from a cross-national comparative perspective.

Meyer (2006) has offered an interesting array of initiatives that scholars in Asia can pursue in enhancing their contribution
to the body of management knowledge. While the objective of his agenda seems timely and relevant, it raises some fundamental
questions that encompass issues such as the scope of research questions that Asian researchers could pursue, the debate over
rigor versus relevance, and the role of established top tier journals in furthering the Asian management research agenda.
This paper discusses some of these issues in the spirit of fostering a continued dialog on the important questions that Meyer
raises.

Familial capitalism in global institutional contexts: Implications for corporate governance and entrepreneurship in East Asia 总被引:5,自引:3,他引:2
Lloyd P. Steier 《Asia Pacific Journal of Management》2009,26(3):513-535
Many of the world’s firms have a familial dimension; including some of the most dynamic and emerging markets of East Asia.
However, this important aspect of organizing economic activity remains understudied and misunderstood. A central theme of
this article is that while families matter in economic activity throughout the world, they matter in different ways depending
on the institutional context. To illustrate this theme a varieties of capitalism perspective is used to develop a rudimentary
global comparative framework. Institutional context is portrayed as a key determinant of the degree and type of family governance
that typify national economies. Implications for corporate governance and entrepreneurship in East Asia are discussed.

Regional multinationals and the Korean cosmetics industry 总被引:4,自引:1,他引:3
This paper analyzes the market penetration and expansion strategy of cosmetics and toiletries multinational enterprises (MNEs)
in South Korea from the perspective of regional strategy as developed recently by Rugman. We find that MNEs have different
market entry and expansion strategies in the home region and in the foreign region. Home region MNEs (Japanese MNEs in this
case), in general, utilize their firm-specific advantages (FSAs) better than foreign region MNEs (European and MNEs from the
Americas in this case). Due to differences in transaction costs, home region MNEs exploit downstream FSAs while foreign region
MNEs develop upstream FSAs. Market similarity also leads to a greater incentive to operate in the home region rather than
in foreign regions. The home region effect significantly increases the likelihood of entry into foreign markets as the host
country's “diamond” significantly affects the market entry strategies of MNEs.

The adolescence of Asia management research: <Emphasis Type="Italic">APJM</Emphasis>, 1997–2006 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
Erin G. Pleggenkuhle-Miles Ramya R. Aroul Sunny Li Sun Yu-Shan Su 《Asia Pacific Journal of Management》2007,24(4):467-489
In this article we reflect on the adolescent years of Asia management research published in the Asia Pacific Journal of Management (APJM) by reviewing work published in the past 10 years (1997–2006). We report that during the last decade, APJM has published 223 research articles, written by 373 different authors, who are affiliated with 203 different institutions.
Our discussion of the future of Asia management research is guided by Kuhn’s (Kuhn, T. S. The structure of scientific revolutions. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1962) perspective on the nonlinear progression of science. We argue that as a growing
community, Asia management research is finding its “identity” and establishing its presence in the larger worldwide management
research community. Following our analysis, we conclude that the growth of Asia management research—as captured by APJM publications—throughout its “adolescent” years has set forth a challenging and exciting path for the future.

The purpose of the paper is to offer a context-specific perspective of gender equality and its implications for equal employment
opportunity in Islamic societies. The paper discusses various discourses on the Islamic perspective of gender and how they
might impact female employment in the formal employment sector. The study highlights some major differences among Muslim countries
with respect to gender ideology and the corresponding prospects for equal employment opportunity. Furthermore, the paper argues
that any attempts to reform the socio-political institutions and labor policies in Islamic societies must be informed by their
particular formal and informal institutional features.

The growth of outward investment from China has generated expressions of concern from policymakers in the United States regarding
the economic and national security impacts of such investments. While inward foreign direct investment (FDI) has come to be
viewed by most observers as generally imparting net economic benefits to the host economy, acquisitions of US companies by
Chinese multinational companies (MNCs) have been criticized on several grounds. One is based on the mode of entry itself:
some critics believe that entry by acquisition brings lower benefits than greenfield entry. A second and more prominent concern
is that acquisitions of US companies by Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs) may be motivated by non-commercial objectives
which, in turn, make those acquisitions of questionable value to the host economy. In this paper, we argue that Chinese FDI
in the United States is more likely to take the form of acquisitions than greenfield investments for the foreseeable future.
However, there is no strong case to be made that the host country economic benefits from Chinese FDI would be larger if entry
took place primarily through greenfield investments. Furthermore, most of the alleged costs to the US economy from inward
FDI from China are either unlikely to occur or are already anticipated by existing US laws and regulations, thus necessitating
no additional, specific legislation.

Business groups played an important role in the economic development of East Asian countries. Yet business groups in East
Asia face an uncertain future. Following the Asian Crisis, foreign creditors and investors have demanded that business groups
have more transparent operations and stronger corporate governance. At the same time, as governments in East Asia have loosened
trade barriers, business groups have become subject to intense competition in domestic markets. This paper argues that business
groups can survive or even prosper by taking initiatives in corporate restructuring. This paper also highlights some areas
for further research on business groups in this region.

Location advantages and subsidiaries’ R&;D activities in emerging economies: Exploring the effect of employee mobility 总被引:3,自引:3,他引:0
With multinational corporations increasingly seeking subsidiaries’ specific advantages in foreign countries to develop their
innovative capabilities, internationalization of research and development has been greatly emphasized. However, in emerging
economies, managers are encountering the challenge of high employee mobility under the weak intellectual property protection
regime. This article investigates subsidiaries’ employee mobility and proposes that it negatively moderates the relationship
between location advantages and the level of subsidiaries’ R&D. This article extends R&D internationalization and enhances
current understanding of subsidiaries’ R&D activities. Further, it provides managerial implications as to how managers can
improve R&D outcome by mitigating obstacles in emerging economies.

An assessment of alternative empirical measures of cultural distance: Evidence from the Republic of Korea 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This study assesses the relative merits of alternative cultural frameworks as the basis to construct indices of cultural distance
using the one introduced by Kogut and Singh (1988). We assess not only Hofstede (1980, 1991) but also the more recent Schwartz
(1994, 2003) and GLOBE (2004) frameworks. Using primary data collected through a questionnaire survey of 228 foreign manufacturing
firms in the Republic of Korea, we find consistently across the three different frameworks that cultural distance has a positive
association with full ownership. These results support not only the robustness of Kogut and Singh’s method to construct an
index of cultural distance but also the consistency of the alternative indices of cultural distance used to explain ownership
mode decisions by MNEs.

Managerial ties,absorptive capacity,and innovation 总被引:12,自引:5,他引:7
Managerial ties—the boundary-spanning ties and interpersonal connections of top managers—contribute to a corporation’s innovativeness
in emerging economies because of the absence of market supporting institutions, transparent laws, and clear regulations. Moreover,
managerial ties are apt to interact with absorptive capacity to facilitate knowledge sharing and innovation. This paper examines
the joint influence of managerial ties and absorptive capacity in two communities in China, one characterized by a high level
of foreign direct investment (FDI) and the other consisting mainly of local corporations. We find that absorptive capacity
moderates the effect of managerial ties on a corporation’s innovativeness. Furthermore, when examining the two communities
separately, we find that business ties and university ties have opposite effects.

How does strategic orientation matter in Chinese firms? 总被引:3,自引:2,他引:1
As China continues to transition toward a market economy, how strategic orientation affects firm performance has received
significant attention. This article reviews the extant literature with a framework that depicts contemporary work on strategic
orientation, the drivers of strategic orientation, and its boundary conditions. We identify important research gaps and propose
to integrate institutional theory, dynamic capability perspective, and the knowledge-based view within the strategic orientation
research stream for future investigations.
