Are there demonstration-related spillovers from FDI?: Evidence from Switzerland

This paper examines whether there are signs of demonstration-related spillovers from foreign direct investment (FDI). It hypothesizes that the size and the extent of such benefits vary according to the level of the absorptive capacity of local firms. Using detailed firm data from Swiss manufacturing and services/construction, we find strong evidence for demonstration-related spillovers when (a) local firms are not far behind the technological frontier of the industry with a technological gap slightly greater than one, and (b) local firms demonstrate high investment in the absorptive capacity. The results are found to be more consistent in manufacturing than services/construction.

What do firms from transition economies want from their strategic alliance partners?

A financial system engaged in active transition from central planning to free market may be dubbed a transition economy. On today's global landscape, there are several important transition economies, all at various stages of transition and with differing degrees of success. Yet, much is not known about this important sector of the world economy. As outside enterprises seek alliances with firms from transition economies, it is important to know what these firms want from alliance partners. To learn more, we conducted a study interviewing managers of private firms from the two largest and most strategically important transition economies: China and Russia. We found that while Chinese and Russian firms often hope for some of the same things as their counterparts in mature economies as regards alliances, they are also interested in other things not normally associated with alliances: political influence, relief from paying bribes, and protection from extortion or even violence. Moreover, we discovered that because of differing institutional conditions in the two countries, Chinese firms are not always looking for the same things from alliances as are Russian firms—in spite of surface similarities between the two economies. Based on these findings, we provide guidelines for firms seeking alliance partners in transition economies, to assist them in determining if an alliance is right for them and planning accordingly.     

Who Benefits from Industrial Concentration? Evidence from U.S. Manufacturing

This article estimates the impact of industrial concentration on aggregate welfare as well as consumer and producer surpluses taking into account market power and cost efficiency effects. Using a sample of 232 U.S. manufacturing industries, empirical results indicate that an across-the-board increase in concentration would enhance aggregate welfare in 69 % of the industries due to widespread efficiency gains, although these accrue mostly to producers and are not passed on to consumers. Further results indicate that greater concentration is likely to enhance aggregate welfare in industries with low or moderate initial concentration that exhibit economies of scale and have greater exposure to international trade. However, consumers benefit only from increased concentration in industries whose initial levels are low and which face more import competition, lower exports and smaller markets. Producers benefit in symmetrically opposite ways, except for the case of low initial levels of concentration. In the absence of government intervention, Pareto improvements wherein everyone benefits from greater concentration are only guaranteed in industries with low levels of initial concentration in which efficiency gains yield price reductions that benefit consumers as well as producers.

Which Brands Gain Share from Which Brands? Inference from Store-Level Scanner Data

Market share models for weekly store-level data are useful to understand competitive structures by delivering own and cross price elasticities. These models can however not be used to examine which brands lose share to which brands during a specific period of time. It is for this purpose that we propose a new model, which does allow for such an examination. We illustrate the model for two product categories in two markets, and we provide share-switching estimates.
