Knowledge Levels and their Transformation: Towards the Integration of Knowledge Creation and Individual Learning*

abstract This paper shows the link between knowledge creation and individual learning, and the coherence that exists between the knowledge creation view and single and double‐loop learning models. It does so by examining differences in levels of knowledge and their relationship with creativity and knowledge creating behaviours. The analysis shifts the focus from the abstract notion of tacit knowledge to a more specific discussion on creative human cognition. The paper is unique in adopting an endogenous perspective to the analysis of individual learning. The analysis is distinct from previous discussions on knowledge creation in three ways: (a) explicit and tacit knowledge are analysed in terms of the nature and degree of inter‐dependence that exists between the two; (b) knowledge levels are defined in terms of their applications rather than as abstract concepts; and (c) a distinction is made between shifts and movements in knowledge to separate, and subsequently integrate, the information processing and creative dimensions of learning. Further, the paper highlights specific challenges and limitations/costs that are associated with the transfer/acquisition of knowledge levels, and argues that in the absence of a conscious effort, knowledge levels are acquired through mistakes and failures. Following that, various theoretical and managerial implications to facilitate knowledge creation are discussed.

Language acquisition and regional innovation: Evidence from English proficiency in China

Language, as an instrument of human thinking and communication, plays a critical role in the process of knowledge formation and innovation cooperation. This paper investigates the impact of English proficiency on regional innovation in China. We find that English proficiency can improve the level of regional innovation, particularly for invention patents. Further channel tests show that English proficiency affects regional innovation by enhancing knowledge acquisition, knowledge creation, and knowledge absorption. Moreover, the policy shock of the 2016 college entrance exam mitigates the positive impact of English proficiency on regional innovation. English proficiency can also effectively enhance regional entrepreneurship.     

关于高职院校英语教学的探讨

Team Learning from Mistakes: The Contribution of Cooperative Goals and Problem‐Solving*

ABSTRACT Although mistakes may have considerable potential for learning, previous research has emphasized that organizational members are often defensive when their mistakes are pointed out and will even continue with their present course of action despite growing costs. Recent research has shown that team‐level variables, such as psychological safety and shared mental model, can help overcome barriers to learning from mistakes. Structural equation analyses on teams working in a sample of organizations in Shanghai, China, suggested that teams were able to learn from their mistakes to the extent that they took a problem solving orientation. This orientation in turn was based on developing cooperative but not competitive goals within the team. Although competitive and independent goals induce blaming, blaming itself was not significantly related to learning. Blaming, especially when conducted openly, may hold individual team members accountable as well as provoke defensiveness. Findings empirically link the theory of cooperation and competition with the organizational learning literature. Results suggest that cooperative goals and problem solving promote learning from mistakes.

浅谈文化差异与英语教学

语言学是一门研究人类语言的学科。语言是不同种族、不同文化和不同性别的人们用来相互交流的一种工具。因此,在语言的教学过程中,对文化背景知识的了解是必不可少的。因此,在英语教学中,教师应有意识地对学生传授一些相关的文化背景知识,使学生了解各种文化之间的差异,掌握正确的表达方法,提高英语综合运用能力。     

高校英语教学中的文化融入探析

文化和语言相辅相成、密不可分，这要求我们在英语教学中必须进行文化教学。然而。在目前英语教学中，没有充分认识到它的重要性。文中从培养文化意识、采取文化教学的保障措施、时时进行文化信息传递和系统地进行文化知识教学等方面，探讨了高校英语课中的文化教学问题。     

Knowledge flow in China’s humanities and social sciences

Despite fruitful studies on knowledge flow and interdisciplinarity, there are few investigations on knowledge flow in humanities and social sciences (HSS) and how knowledge from science and technology diffuses to HSS sub-disciplines. Based on Chinese and English articles in HSS, this study explored knowledge flow in China’s HSS with an analysis of Chinese and English publications from 1998 to 2014. Findings include: (1) the interdisciplinarity degree of knowledge absorption in social sciences is higher than that of humanities in both Chinese and English articles, meanwhile the degree of interdisciplinarity in all HSS sub-disciplines increased constantly; (2) Chinese scholars in HSS increasingly tended to learn knowledge in hard sciences and applied it to their domains, especially in English articles; (3) in Chinese articles, Economics was the most crucial knowledge base, while Management, Education and Law were absorption-oriented sub-disciplines; in English articles Management, Law, Literature and Philosophy were absorption-oriented sub-disciplines.
