Nonparametric regression has only recently been employed in the estimation of finite population parameters in a model-assisted framework. This paper proposes a new calibration estimator for the distribution function using nonparametric methods to obtain the fitted values on which to calibrate. The proposed estimator is a genuine distribution function that presents several attractive features. In terms of relative efficiency and relative bias, the behaviour of the proposed estimator is compared to other known estimators in a limited simulation study on real populations.  相似文献

Summary In this paper a compound gamma distribution has been derived by compounding a gamma distribution with another gamma distribution. The resulting compound gamma distribution has been reduced to the Beta distributions of the first kind and the second kind and to theF distribution by suitable transformations. This includes theLomax distribution as a special case which enjoys a useful property. Moment estimators for two of its parameters are explicitly obtained, which tend to a bivariate normal distribution. The paper contains expressions for a bivariate probability density function, its conditional expectation, conditional variance and the product moment correlation coefficient. Finally, all the parameters of the compound gamma distribution are explicitly expressed in terms of the functions of the moments of the functions of random variables in two different ways. This note is based on a technical report prepared by the author while he was with the Procter and Gamble Company.  相似文献

The distributions of X, Y and (X. Y ), where X and Y are random variables with probability functions of a logarithmic series law, are characterized by the regression function of X on Y and the conditional distribution of Y given X. Moreover, characterizations are given for binomial or Pascal conditional distributions in terms of the regression function of X on Y and the marginal distribution of X.  相似文献

In this paper we describe methods and evaluate programs for linear regression by maximum likelihood when the errors have a heavy tailed stable distribution. The asymptotic Fisher information matrix for both the regression coefficients and the error distribution parameters are derived, giving large sample confidence intervals for all parameters. Simulated examples are shown where the errors are stably distributed and also where the errors are heavy tailed but are not stable, as well as a real example using financial data. The results are then extended to nonlinear models and to non-homogeneous error terms.  相似文献

The exponentiated Weibull distribution is a convenient alternative to the generalized gamma distribution to model time-to-event data. It accommodates both monotone and nonmonotone hazard shapes, and flexible enough to describe data with wide ranging characteristics. It can also be used for regression analysis of time-to-event data. The maximum likelihood method is thus far the most widely used technique for inference, though there is a considerable body of research of improving the maximum likelihood estimators in terms of asymptotic efficiency. For example, there has recently been considerable attention on applying James–Stein shrinkage ideas to parameter estimation in regression models. We propose nonpenalty shrinkage estimation for the exponentiated Weibull regression model for time-to-event data. Comparative studies suggest that the shrinkage estimators outperform the maximum likelihood estimators in terms of statistical efficiency. Overall, the shrinkage method leads to more accurate statistical inference, a fundamental and desirable component of statistical theory.  相似文献

We present short proofs of some basic results from isotonic regression theory. A straightforward argument is given to show that the left continuous version of the concave majorant of the empirical distribution function maximizes the likelihood function f↦f (X,)… f (X n ) within the class of non-increasing densities. Similarly, it is shown that the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimator (NPMLE) of the distribution function of interval censored data has an interpretation in terms of the left derivative of a convex minor ant. Finally, a short proof is given to show that the number of vertices of the concave major ant of the uniform empirical distribution function is asymptotically normal with asymptotic mean and variance both equal to log n .  相似文献

We address the problem of the estimation of the population mean and the distribution function using nonparametric regression. These methods are being used in a wide range of settings and areas of research. In particular, they are a good alternative to other classical methods in the survey sampling context, since they work under the assumption that the underlying regression function is smooth. Some relevant nonparametric regression methods in survey sampling are presented. Data on breast cancer prevalence derived from 40 European countries are used to study the application of the nonparametric estimators to the estimation of cancer prevalence. Result derived from an empirical study show that nonparametric estimators have a good empirical performance in this study on cancer prevalence.  相似文献

In this paper we develop wavelet methods for detecting and estimating jumps and cusps in the mean function of a non-parametric regression model. An important characteristic of the model considered here is that it allows for conditional heteroscedastic variance, a feature frequently encountered with economic and financial data. Wavelet analysis of change-points in this model has been considered in a limited way in a recent study by Chen et al. (2008) with a focus on jumps only. One problem with the aforementioned paper is that the test statistic developed there has an extreme value null limit distribution. The results of other studies have shown that the rate of convergence to the extreme value distribution is usually very slow, and critical values derived from this distribution tend to be much larger than the true ones. Here, we develop a new test and show that the test statistic has a convenient null limit N(0,1) distribution. This feature gives the proposed approach an appealing advantage over the existing approach. Another attractive feature of our results is that the asymptotic theory developed here holds for both jumps and cusps. Implementation of the proposed method for multiple jumps and cusps is also examined. The results from a simulation study show that the new test has excellent power and the estimators developed also yield very accurate estimates of the positions of the discontinuities.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a mean linear regression model where the response variable is inverse gamma distributed using a new parameterization of this distribution that is indexed by mean and precision parameters. The main advantage of our new parametrization is the straightforward interpretation of the regression coefficients in terms of the expectation of the positive response variable, as usual in the context of generalized linear models. The variance function of the proposed model has a quadratic form. The inverse gamma distribution is a member of the exponential family of distributions and has some distributions commonly used for parametric models in survival analysis as special cases. We compare the proposed model to several alternatives and illustrate its advantages and usefulness. With a generalized linear model approach that takes advantage of exponential family properties, we discuss model estimation (by maximum likelihood), black further inferential quantities and diagnostic tools. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to evaluate the performances of these estimators in finite samples with a discussion of the obtained results. A real application using minerals data set collected by Department of Mines of the University of Atacama, Chile, is considered to demonstrate the practical potential of the proposed model.  相似文献

Sir Francis Galton introduced median regression and the use of the quantile function to describe distributions. Very early on the tradition moved to mean regression and the universal use of the Normal distribution, either as the natural ‘error’ distribution or as one forced by transformation. Though the introduction of ‘quantile regression’ refocused attention on the shape of the variability about the line, it uses nonparametric approaches and so ignores the actual distribution of the ‘error’ term. This paper seeks to show how Galton's approach enables the complete regression model, deterministic and stochastic elements, to be modelled, fitted and investigated. The emphasis is on the range of models that can be used for the stochastic element. It is noted that as the deterministic terms can be built up from components, so to, using quantile functions, can the stochastic element. The model may thus be treated in both modelling and fitting as a unity. Some evidence is presented to justify the use of a much wider range of distributional models than is usually considered and to emphasize their flexibility in extending regression models.  相似文献

Quantile models and estimators for data analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Quantile regression is used to estimate the cross sectional relationship between high school characteristics and student achievement as measured by ACT scores. The importance of school characteristics on student achievement has been traditionally framed in terms of the effect on the expected value. With quantile regression the impact of school characteristics is allowed to be different at the mean and quantiles of the conditional distribution. Like robust estimation, the quantile approach detects relationships missed by traditional data analysis. Robust estimates detect the influence of the bulk of the data, whereas quantile estimates detect the influence of co-variates on alternate parts of the conditional distribution. Since our design consists of multiple responses (individual student ACT scores) at fixed explanatory variables (school characteristics) the quantile model can be estimated by the usual regression quantiles, but additionally by a regression on the empirical quantile at each school. This is similar to least squares where the estimate based on the entire data is identical to weighted least squares on the school averages. Unlike least squares however, the regression through the quantiles produces a different estimate than the regression quantiles.  相似文献

Weighted polynomial regression with exponential weight function on an interval is considered. The D-optimal designs are completely characterized via three differential equations. Some invariant properties of the optimal designs under affine transformation are derived. The optimal design as degree of polynomial goes to infinity, is shown to converge weakly to the arcsin distribution. Comparisons of the optimal designs with the arcsin distribution are also made.  相似文献

This paper introduces a rank-based test for the instrumental variables regression model that dominates the Anderson–Rubin test in terms of finite sample size and asymptotic power in certain circumstances. The test has correct size for any distribution of the errors with weak or strong instruments. The test has noticeably higher power than the Anderson–Rubin test when the error distribution has thick tails and comparable power otherwise. Like the Anderson–Rubin test, the rank tests considered here perform best, relative to other available tests, in exactly identified models.  相似文献

A representation in terms of independent standard normal variables tor the general quadratic form in normal variables in the univariate case, obtained by DIK and DE GUNST (1985), is extended to the multivariate situation. A representation for the quadratic function in normal vectors X'AX , where X is a random matrix with normally distributed elements and A a real symmetric matrix, is given in terms of independent and identically distributed central normal vectors. The representation is valid only when the covariance structure of X is of a special form, but all known results, especially necessary and sufficient conditions for X'AX to have a Wishart distribution, can easily be derived from it.  相似文献

Summary Bivariate distributions, which may be of special relevance to the lifetimes of two components of a system, are derived using the following approach. As the two components are part of one system and therefore exposed to similar conditions of service, there will be similarity between their lifetimes that is not shared by components belonging to different systems. The lifetime distribution for a given system is assumed to be Gamma in form (this includes the exponential as a special case; extension to the Stacey distribution, which includes the Weibull distribution, is straightforward). The scale parameter of this distribution is itself a random variable, with a Gamma distribution. We thus obtain what might be termed a compound Gamma-Gamma bivariate distribution. The cumulative distribution function of this may be expressed in terms of one of the double hypergeometric functions of Appell.Generalised hypergeometric functions play an important part in this paper, and one of Saran's triple hypergeometric functions is obtained when generalising the above model to permit the scale parameters of the distributions for the two components to be correlated, rather than identical.Work started while the author was with the Transport Studies Group, University College London.  相似文献

The paper discusses the asymptotic validity of posterior inference of pseudo‐Bayesian quantile regression methods with complete or censored data when an asymmetric Laplace likelihood is used. The asymmetric Laplace likelihood has a special place in the Bayesian quantile regression framework because the usual quantile regression estimator can be derived as the maximum likelihood estimator under such a model, and this working likelihood enables highly efficient Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for posterior sampling. However, it seems to be under‐recognised that the stationary distribution for the resulting posterior does not provide valid posterior inference directly. We demonstrate that a simple adjustment to the covariance matrix of the posterior chain leads to asymptotically valid posterior inference. Our simulation results confirm that the posterior inference, when appropriately adjusted, is an attractive alternative to other asymptotic approximations in quantile regression, especially in the presence of censored data.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of estimation of a nonparametric regression function from selectively observed data when selection is endogenous. Our approach relies on independence between covariates and selection conditionally on potential outcomes. Endogeneity of regressors is also allowed for. In the exogenous and endogenous case, consistent two-step estimation procedures are proposed and their rates of convergence are derived. Pointwise asymptotic distribution of the estimators is established. In addition, bootstrap uniform confidence bands are obtained. Finite sample properties are illustrated in a Monte Carlo simulation study and an empirical illustration.  相似文献

Under a quantile restriction, randomly censored regression models can be written in terms of conditional moment inequalities. We study the identified features of these moment inequalities with respect to the regression parameters where we allow for covariate dependent censoring, endogenous censoring and endogenous regressors. These inequalities restrict the parameters to a set. We show regular point identification can be achieved under a set of interpretable sufficient conditions. We then provide a simple way to convert conditional moment inequalities into unconditional ones while preserving the informational content. Our method obviates the need for nonparametric estimation, which would require the selection of smoothing parameters and trimming procedures. Without the point identification conditions, our objective function can be used to do inference on the partially identified parameter. Maintaining the point identification conditions, we propose a quantile minimum distance estimator which converges at the parametric rate to the parameter vector of interest, and has an asymptotically normal distribution. A small scale simulation study and an application using drug relapse data demonstrate satisfactory finite sample performance.  相似文献

In this note we consider a generalisation of theStirling noumber of the second kind. The distribution of the sum ofn independent zero-truncated Poisson variables, which can be expressed in terms of such a gneralised number, may be called horizontally generalised Stirling distribution of the second kind. A recurrence relation for the probability function of this distribution, which will be useful for tabulation purposes, is given. The distribution function is obtained in terms of a linear combination of incomplete gamma functions.  相似文献
