A theoretical model is presented, which predicts a heightening in return volatility following a news reversal. A reversal occurs when a value of an economic indicator that is larger than the forecasted value is followed in the following month by a value smaller than the forecasted value, or vice versa. The model also suggests that the effects of a news reversal will be more pronounced early in the monthly macroeconomic news cycle. The predictions of the model for trading activity are less clear. The main predictions of the model were tested employing intraday data for the nearby Treasury bond futures contract. Consistent with the model, the data show significantly greater responses in volatility per standard‐deviation surprise when there is a news reversal, than otherwise. This paper considers whether the introduction of the mini‐futures contract for the Spanish Ibex index affects overall market efficiency. Using linear, non‐linear, and fractional integration modeling techniques for the basis term, results of this study suggest the following salient points. First, the equilibrium speed of adjustment is reduced after the introduction of the mini‐futures contract. This effect is particularly pronounced in the mini‐futures second year when its contracts are more heavily traded. Second, fractional integration tests support longer memory in the basis term after the contract introduction, again particularly in the second year. Third, the relationship between the full‐size and mini‐futures contracts appears highly efficient, with a quick speed of adjustment and short memory. Finally, an examination of the volatility dynamics suggests that in the second year of the mini‐futures contract shocks to spot return volatility exhibit longer memory. The results reported here suggest that the increased use of the mini‐futures contract after its introduction has had a detrimental impact on price discovery. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper investigates and analyzes the intraday and daily determinants of bid-ask spreads (BASs) in the foreign exchange futures (FXF) market. It is found that the number of transactions and the volatility of FXF prices are the major determinants. The number of transactions is negatively related to the BAS, whereas volatility in general is positively related to it. The study also finds that there are economies of scale in trading FXF contracts. The intraday BAS follows a U-shaped pattern, and they tend to be higher on Mondays and Tuesdays than on other days of the week. Higher spreads at the beginning and end of a trading day are consistent with the presence of adverse selection and the avoidance of the possibility of carrying undesirable inventory overnight, respectively. During the last weeks before each quarterly expiration of Standard & Poor's (S&P) 500 futures, the bulk of trading volume begins to shift away from the next‐to‐expire (nearby or lead) contract toward the second‐to‐expire (next out) contract. At some point, the exchange formally redesignates the next out as the new lead contract, and the next out replaces the nearby in the futures pit location designated for the lead contract. This event invariably results in a dramatic increase (decrease) in trading activity in the next out (nearby) contract. This shift in relative trading volumes is due to the microstructure of the futures exchange rather than new information or underlying volatility conditions. The event thus offers us an opportunity to examine how volatility responds to noninformation‐based exogenous changes in volume. This study examines the volatility behavior of nearby and next out S&P 500 futures contracts on the 10 days surrounding quarterly redesignation of the lead contract. Our model measures possible changes in (a) the level of volatility and/or (b) the association between volume and volatility after redesignation of the lead contract. Results indicate that when we account for the association between volume and volatility, the higher volume lead contract consistently experiences a lower level of volatility. This outcome supports the view that the larger population of liquidity providers who trade the more active lead contract fosters greater market depth and lower volatility. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article examines the pattern of volatility over time of a series of commodity futures prices, and focuses in particular on the futures price variability as the maturity date of the futures contract approaches. The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) is the most widely quoted stock index worldwide. This article examines the minute-by-minute price discovery process and volatility spillovers between the DJIA index and the index futures recently launched by the CBOT. The Hasbrouck (1995) cointegrating model suggests that most of the price discovery takes place at the futures market. However, by examining the volatility spillovers between the markets based on a bivariate EGARCH model, a significant bidirectional information flow is found. That is, innovations in one market can predict the future volatility in another market, but the futures market volatility-spillovers to the stock market more than vice versa. This study models and tests empirically the role of public news arrivals in the quote matching across single‐stock futures and underlying stock markets—a trading strategy often adopted by algorithmic traders. Our model suggests that quote return correlation across these two markets breaks down when the news uncertainty is sufficiently large and futures market makers switch from automating the quote matching process to manually analyze, monitor, and update quotes. We show empirically that the breakdown is more prominent for large stocks, and this effect of firm size falls during periods of high‐market volatility. Our empirical results are robust to the effect of distraction due to extraneous news events.  相似文献

This study has two main objectives. Firstly, volatility transmission between stocks and bonds in European markets is studied using the two most important financial assets in these fields: the DJ Euro Stoxx 50 index futures contract and the Euro Bund futures contract. Secondly, a trading rule for the major European futures contracts is designed. This rule can be applied to different markets and assets to analyze the economic significance of volatility spillovers observed between them. The results indicate that volatility spillovers take place in both directions and that the stock‐bond trading rule offers very profitable returns after transaction costs. This study examines the effect of cash market liquidity on the volatility of stock index futures. Two facets of cash market liquidity are considered: (1) the level of liquidity trading proxied by the expected New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) trading volume and (2) the noise composition of trading proxied by the average NYSE trading commission cost. Under the framework of spline–GARCH with a liquidity component, both the quarterly average commission cost and the quarterly expected NYSE volume are negatively associated with the ex ante daily volatility of S&P 500 and NYSE composite index futures. Conversely, liquidity and noise trading in the cash market both dampen futures price volatility, ceteris paribus. This negative association between secular cash trading liquidity and daily futures price volatility is amplified during times of market crisis. These results retain statistical significance and materiality after controlling for bid–ask bounce of futures prices and volume of traded futures contracts. This study establishes empirical evidence to affirm the conventional prediction of a liquidity–volatility relationship: the liquidity effect is secular and persistent across markets. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Many financial data series are found to exhibit stochastic volatility. Some of these time series are constructed from contracts with time-varying maturities. In this paper, we focus on index futures, an important subclass of such time series. We propose a bivariate GARCH model with the maturity effect to describe the joint dynamics of the spot index and the futures-spot basis. The setup makes it possible to examine the Samuelson effect as well as to compare the hedge ratios under scenarios with and without the maturity effect. The Nikkei-225 index and its futures are used in our empirical analysis. Contrary to the Samuelson effect, we find that the volatility of the futures price decreases when the contract is closer to its maturity. We also apply our model to futures hedging, and find that both the optimal hedge ratio and the hedging effectiveness critically depend on both the maturity and GARCH effects. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Various authors claim to have found evidence of stochastic long‐memory behavior in futures’ contract returns using the Hurst statistic. This paper reexamines futures’ returns for evidence of persistent behavior using a biased‐corrected version of the Hurst statistic, a nonparametric spectral test, and a spectral‐regression estimate of the long‐memory parameter. Results based on these new methods provide no evidence for persistent behavior in futures’ returns. However, they provide overwhelming evidence of long‐memory behavior for the volatility of futures’ returns. This finding adds to the emerging literature on persistent volatility in financial markets and suggests the use of new methods of forecasting volatility, assessing risk, and optimizing portfolios in futures’ markets. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This study examines daily and intraday data on sterling interest rate futures and IMM forward rate agreement (FRA) contracts for evidence of the convexity adjustment in FRA quotes. The futures/FRA differential is marginally negative, contrary to the predictions of convexity models. Standard statistical tests confirm that the futures/FRA differential does not differ between contract maturities. Regression analysis also fails to find any support for the predicted positive relationships between the differential and the term to settlement and volatility of interest rates. We document trade price clustering in the futures markets. We find clustering at prices of x.00 and x.50 for S&P 500 futures contracts. While trade price clustering is evident throughout time to maturity of these contracts, there is a dramatic change when the S&P 500 futures contract is designated a front‐month contract (decrease in clustering) and a back‐month contract (increase in clustering). We find that trade price clustering is a positive function of volatility and a negative function of volume or open interest. In addition, we find a high degree of clustering in the daily opening and closing prices, but a lower degree of clustering in the settlement prices. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigates the relationship between volatility and contract expiration for the case of Mexican interest rate futures. Specifically, it examines the hypothesis that the volatility of futures prices should increase as contracts approach expiration (the “maturity effect”). Using panel data techniques, the study assesses the differences in volatility patterns between contracts. The results show that although the maturity effect was sometimes present, the inverse effect prevails; volatility decreases as expiration approaches. On the basis of the premises of the negative covariance hypothesis, the study provides additional criteria that explain this behavior in terms of the term structure dynamics. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of scheduled macroeconomic announcements on the real-time intraday return volatilities, covariances, and correlations between the Eurodollar futures and the U.S. Treasury bond futures markets are studied. These announcements are responsible for most of the observed intraday jumps in volatilities, covariances, and correlations. The details of the linkage are intriguing and include announcements timing effect. Further study on intraday asymmetric volatility and correlation-in-volatility indicates that news announcements magnify asymmetric volatility and shed light on why correlations tend to be high when volatilities are high. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Recently, the OMX Nordic Exchange reduced the exchange fee for trading the OMXS 30 index futures with more than 22%. The reduction in exchange fees provides this study with a unique opportunity to investigate the effects of a change in fixed transaction costs on futures market liquidity, trading activity, volatility, futures pricing efficiency, and the futures exchange's revenues. The results show a ceteris paribus increase in futures trading volume with 19%, a 27% decrease in futures bid–ask spread, and a 27% increase in volatility, as a result of the futures exchange fee reduction, whereas the pricing efficiency of the futures contract and the exchange's revenues are unaffected by the change in transaction costs. The exchange fee reduction has improved futures market liquidity at the cost of higher volatility. Moreover, the attractiveness and competitiveness of the futures exchange has increased relative alternative trading venues, without a loss of revenues in the process. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study investigates the efficiency of the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) Division light sweet crude oil futures contract market during recent periods of extreme conditional volatility. Crude oil futures contract prices are found to be cointegrated with spot prices and unbiased predictors of future spot prices, including the period prior to the onset of the Iraqi war and until the formation of the new Iraqi government in April 2005. This article studies how the spot‐futures conditional covariance matrix responds to positive and negative innovations. The main results of the article are achieved by obtaining the Volatility Impulse Response Function (VIRF) for asymmetric multivariate GARCH structures, extending Lin (1997) findings for symmetric GARCH models. This theoretical result is general and can be applied to analyze covariance dynamics in any financial system. After testing how multivariate GARCH models clean up volatility asymmetries, the Asymmetric VIRF is computed for the Spanish stock index IBEX‐35 and its futures contract. The empirical results indicate that the spot‐futures variance system is more sensitive to negative than positive shocks, and that spot volatility shocks have much more impact on futures volatility than vice versa. Additionally, evidence is obtained showing that optimal hedge ratios are insensitive to the well‐known asymmetric volatility behavior in stock markets. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This paper examines a wide variety of models that allow for complex and discontinuous periodic variation in conditional volatility. The value of these models (including augmented versions of existing models) is demonstrated with an application to high frequency commodity futures return data. Their use is necessary, in this context, because commodity futures returns exhibit discontinuous intraday and interday periodicities in conditional volatility. The former of these effects is well documented for various asset returns; however, the latter is unique amongst commodity futures returns, where contract delivery and climate are driving forces. Using six years of high‐frequency cocoa futures data, the results show that these characteristics of conditional return volatility are most adequately captured by a spline‐version of the periodic generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedastic (PGARCH) model. This model also provides superior forecasts of future return volatility that are robust to variation in the loss function assumed by the user, and are shown to be beneficial to users of Value‐at‐Risk (VaR) models. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This article investigates the impact of margin requirements on the trading activity and volatility in futures markets. We extend Hartzmark's (1986) model for futures demand to allow for the costs imposed by margins to change across the maturity of the contract. The model is tested employing data from the soybean and corn markets. We find that trading activity becomes more sensitive to margin changes as one gets closer to contract maturity, inconsistent with the notion that margins impose important opportunity costs on futures traders. Margins are found to have a negative impact on the trading activities of all types of traders, though there is some evidence that margin alterations bring about changes in the makeup of the market. The data also indicate that margins are likely to be hiked during periods of increased volatility, and reduced during periods of relative stability, thus suggesting that margin alterations serve primarily as insurance to futures exchanges. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
