This paper introduces a simple method to construct a stationary process on the real line with a Pólya‐type covariance function and with any infinitely divisible marginal distribution, by randomising the timescale of the increment of a second‐order Lévy process with an appropriate positive random variable. With the construction method extended to the multivariate case, we construct vector stochastic processes with Pólya‐type direct covariance functions and with any specified infinitely divisible marginal distributions. This makes available a new class of non‐Gaussian vector stochastic processes with flexible correlation structure for use in modelling and simulation.  相似文献

We propose new summary statistics for intensity‐reweighted moment stationary point processes, that is, point processes with translation invariant n‐point correlation functions for all , that generalise the well known J‐, empty space, and spherical Palm contact distribution functions. We represent these statistics in terms of generating functionals and relate the inhomogeneous J‐function to the inhomogeneous reduced second moment function. Extensions to space time and marked point processes are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The concepts of isotropy/anisotropy and separability/non‐separability of a covariance function are strictly related. If a covariance function is separable, it cannot be isotropic or geometrically anisotropic, except for the Gaussian covariance function, which is the only model both separable and isotropic. In this paper, some interesting results concerning the Gaussian covariance model and its properties related to isotropy and separability are given, and moreover, some examples are provided. Finally, a discussion on asymmetric models, with Gaussian marginals, is furnished and the strictly positive definiteness condition is discussed.  相似文献

We develop a panel count model with a latent spatio‐temporal heterogeneous state process for monthly severe crimes at the census‐tract level in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our dataset combines Uniform Crime Reporting data with socio‐economic data. The likelihood is estimated by efficient importance sampling techniques for high‐dimensional spatial models. Estimation results confirm the broken‐windows hypothesis whereby less severe crimes are leading indicators for severe crimes. In addition to ML parameter estimates, we compute several other statistics of interest for law enforcement such as spatio‐temporal elasticities of severe crimes with respect to less severe crimes, out‐of‐sample forecasts, predictive distributions and validation test statistics. Recent development of intensity estimation for inhomogeneous spatial point processes with covariates suggests that kerneling in the covariate space is a competitive intensity estimation method for inhomogeneous Poisson processes. It is not known whether this advantageous performance is still valid when the points interact. In the simplest common case, this happens, for example, when the objects presented as points have a spatial dimension. In this paper, kerneling in the covariate space is extended to Gibbs processes with covariates‐dependent chemical activity and inhibitive interactions, and the performance of the approach is studied through extensive simulation experiments. It is demonstrated that under mild assumptions on the dependence of the intensity on covariates, this approach can provide better results than the classical nonparametric method based on local smoothing in the spatial domain. In comparison with the parametric pseudo‐likelihood estimation, the nonparametric approach can be more accurate particularly when the dependence on covariates is weak or if there is uncertainty about the model or about the range of interactions. An important supplementary task is the dimension reduction of the covariate space. It is shown that the techniques based on the inverse regression, previously applied to Cox processes, are useful even when the interactions are present. © 2014 The Authors. A test statistic is developed for making inference about a block‐diagonal structure of the covariance matrix when the dimensionality p exceeds n, where n = N ? 1 and N denotes the sample size. The suggested procedure extends the complete independence results. Because the classical hypothesis testing methods based on the likelihood ratio degenerate when p > n, the main idea is to turn instead to a distance function between the null and alternative hypotheses. The test statistic is then constructed using a consistent estimator of this function, where consistency is considered in an asymptotic framework that allows p to grow together with n. The suggested statistic is also shown to have an asymptotic normality under the null hypothesis. Some auxiliary results on the moments of products of multivariate normal random vectors and higher‐order moments of the Wishart matrices, which are important for our evaluation of the test statistic, are derived. We perform empirical power analysis for a number of alternative covariance structures.  相似文献

In the context where one main regressor is measured with error and at least one instrumental variable is available for the correction of measurement error, this paper provides, to the best of our knowledge, a first point‐identification result on the variance of measurement error, the variance of latent variable, and their covariance. We show that the parameters are identified if the regression model is not de facto linear. We illustrate the method in an application to identify mean‐reverting measurement error, a typical issue in reported income where the measurement error of income is negatively correlated with the true income.  相似文献

The aim of this study is to investigate how innovative capabilities of the firm affect eco‐innovation from a dynamic capability lens. We build on OECD research to conceptualise eco‐innovation as the capacity with which firms modify, redesign, and create products, processes, procedures, and organisations in order to reduce environmental impact. We propose and test the temporal and relational properties of eco‐innovation as a capability. We demonstrate that eco‐innovation possesses two properties of innovative capabilities, namely, persistence over time and interrelation with other innovations. We thus shed new light on the mechanism through which firms engage in eco‐innovation. We also provide empirical evidence to the debate on the relationship between the “normal” innovation (technological or nontechnological) and eco‐innovation. We show that eco‐innovation and innovation are interrelated both simultaneously and sequentially. Moreover, we show that innovation capabilities and eco‐innovation are not only related, but they also have a complementary nature, which facilitates the development of future eco‐innovation.  相似文献

Spatial marked point processes are models for systems of points which are randomly distributed in space and provided with measured quantities called marks. This study deals with marking, that is methods of constructing marked point processes from unmarked ones. The focus is density‐dependent marking where the local point intensity affects the mark distribution. This study develops new markings for log Gaussian Cox processes. In these markings, both the mean and variance of the mark distribution depend on the local intensity. The mean, variance and mark correlation properties are presented for the new markings, and a Bayesian estimation procedure is suggested for statistical inference. The performance of the new approach is studied by means of simulation experiments. As an example, a tropical rainforest data is modelled.  相似文献

We study the problem of testing the error distribution in a multivariate linear regression (MLR) model. The tests are functions of appropriately standardized multivariate least squares residuals whose distribution is invariant to the unknown cross‐equation error covariance matrix. Empirical multivariate skewness and kurtosis criteria are then compared with a simulation‐based estimate of their expected value under the hypothesized distribution. Special cases considered include testing multivariate normal and stable error distributions. In the Gaussian case, finite‐sample versions of the standard multivariate skewness and kurtosis tests are derived. To do this, we exploit simple, double and multi‐stage Monte Carlo test methods. For non‐Gaussian distribution families involving nuisance parameters, confidence sets are derived for the nuisance parameters and the error distribution. The tests are applied to an asset pricing model with observable risk‐free rates, using monthly returns on New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) portfolios over 5‐year subperiods from 1926 to 1995.  相似文献

This paper studies the efficient estimation of large‐dimensional factor models with both time and cross‐sectional dependence assuming (N,T) separability of the covariance matrix. The asymptotic distribution of the estimator of the factor and factor‐loading space under factor stationarity is derived and compared to that of the principal component (PC) estimator. The paper also considers the case when factors exhibit a unit root. We provide feasible estimators and show in a simulation study that they are more efficient than the PC estimator in finite samples. In application, the estimation procedure is employed to estimate the Lee–Carter model and life expectancy is forecast. The Dutch gender gap is explored and the relationship between life expectancy and the level of economic development is examined in a cross‐country comparison.  相似文献

Ibadan, Nigeria, has been an outlier in the ranking of world‐class cities. But in the past seven years, amidst the circulating Africa Rising narrative, Ibadan has embarked on what I call an Afropolitan Imagineering project of owambe urbanism. Afropolitan Imagineering refers to the production of new images/narratives of Africa and Africans as world‐class and cosmopolitan. Owambe urbanism is a spatio‐temporal neoliberal project concerning destination, arrival and place‐making, which promises a shared and happy future for all urban dwellers. I argue that this promise of happiness is challenged by low‐income women who are cognizant that a shared and happy future is impossible when little effort is made to address social inequality in the present. They thus refuse to be ‘good’ citizens and invoke an alternative urban futurity through their embodied and imagined resistance.  相似文献

We review some first‐order and higher‐order asymptotic techniques for M‐estimators, and we study their stability in the presence of data contaminations. We show that the estimating function (ψ) and its derivative with respect to the parameter play a central role. We discuss in detail the first‐order Gaussian density approximation, saddlepoint density approximation, saddlepoint test, tail area approximation via the Lugannani–Rice formula and empirical saddlepoint density approximation (a technique related to the empirical likelihood method). For all these asymptotics, we show that a bounded ψ (in the Euclidean norm) and a bounded (e.g. in the Frobenius norm) yield stable inference in the presence of data contamination. We motivate and illustrate our findings by theoretical and numerical examples about the benchmark case of one‐dimensional location model.  相似文献

This paper introduces the notion of common non‐causal features and proposes tools to detect them in multivariate time series models. We argue that the existence of co‐movements might not be detected using the conventional stationary vector autoregressive (VAR) model as the common dynamics are present in the non‐causal (i.e. forward‐looking) component of the series. We show that the presence of a reduced rank structure allows to identify purely causal and non‐causal VAR processes of order P>1 even in the Gaussian likelihood framework. Hence, usual test statistics and canonical correlation analysis can be applied, where either lags or leads are used as instruments to determine whether the common features are present in either the backward‐ or forward‐looking dynamics of the series. The proposed definitions of co‐movements are also valid for the mixed causal—non‐causal VAR, with the exception that a non‐Gaussian maximum likelihood estimator is necessary. This means however that one loses the benefits of the simple tools proposed. An empirical analysis on Brent and West Texas Intermediate oil prices illustrates the findings. No short run co‐movements are found in a conventional causal VAR, but they are detected when considering a purely non‐causal VAR.  相似文献

In this paper, we propose several finite‐sample specification tests for multivariate linear regressions (MLR). We focus on tests for serial dependence and ARCH effects with possibly non‐Gaussian errors. The tests are based on properly standardized multivariate residuals to ensure invariance to error covariances. The procedures proposed provide: (i) exact variants of standard multivariate portmanteau tests for serial correlation as well as ARCH effects, and (ii) exact versions of the diagnostics presented by Shanken ( 1990 ) which are based on combining univariate specification tests. Specifically, we combine tests across equations using a Monte Carlo (MC) test method so that Bonferroni‐type bounds can be avoided. The procedures considered are evaluated in a simulation experiment: the latter shows that standard asymptotic procedures suffer from serious size problems, while the MC tests suggested display excellent size and power properties, even when the sample size is small relative to the number of equations, with normal or Student‐t errors. The tests proposed are applied to the Fama–French three‐factor model. Our findings suggest that the i.i.d. error assumption provides an acceptable working framework once we allow for non‐Gaussian errors within 5‐year sub‐periods, whereas temporal instabilities clearly plague the full‐sample dataset. Many phenomena in the life sciences can be analyzed by using a fixed design regression model with a regression function m that exhibits a crossing‐point in the following sense: the regression function runs below or above its mean level, respectively, according as the input variable lies to the left or to the right of that crossing‐point, or vice versa. We propose a non‐parametric estimator and show weak and strong consistency as long as the crossing‐point is unique. It is defined as maximizing point arg max of a certain marked empirical process. For testing the hypothesis H0 that the regression function m actually is constant (no crossing‐point), a decision rule is designed for the specific alternative H1 that m possesses a crossing‐point. The pertaining test‐statistic is the ratio max/argmax of the maximum value and the maximizing point of the marked empirical process. Under the hypothesis the ratio converges in distribution to the corresponding ratio of a reflected Brownian bridge, for which we derive the distribution function. The test is consistent on the whole alternative and superior to the corresponding Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, which is based only on the maximal value max. Some practical examples of possible applications are given where a certain study about dental phobia is discussed in more detail.  相似文献

Second‐order orientation methods provide a natural tool for the analysis of spatial point process data. In this paper, we extend to the spatiotemporal setting the spatial point pair orientation distribution function. The new space–time orientation distribution function is used to detect space–time anisotropic configurations. An edge‐corrected estimator is defined and illustrated through a simulation study. We apply the resulting estimator to data on the spatiotemporal distribution of fire ignition events caused by humans in a square area of 30 × 30 km2 for 4 years. Covariate information is often available in randomised clinical trials for each subject prior to treatment assignment and is commonly utilised to make covariate adjustment for baseline characteristics predictive of the outcome in order to increase precision and improve power in the detection of a treatment effect. Motivated by a nonparametric covariance analysis, we study a projection approach to making objective covariate adjustment in randomised clinical trials on the basis of two unbiased estimating functions that decouple the outcome and covariate data. The proposed projection approach extends a weighted least‐squares procedure by projecting one of the estimating functions onto the linear subspace spanned by the other estimating function that is E‐ancillary for the average treatment effect. Compared with the weighted least‐squares method, the projection method allows for objective inference on the average treatment effect by exploiting the treatment specific covariate–outcome associations. The resulting projection‐based estimator of the average treatment effect is asymptotically efficient when the treatment‐specific working regression models are correctly specified and is asymptotically more efficient than other existing competitors when the treatment‐specific working regression models are misspecified. The proposed projection method is illustrated by an analysis of data from an HIV clinical trial. In a simulation study, we show that the proposed projection method compares favourably with its competitors in finite samples.  相似文献

This paper introduces a quasi maximum likelihood approach based on the central difference Kalman filter to estimate non‐linear dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models with potentially non‐Gaussian shocks. We argue that this estimator can be expected to be consistent and asymptotically normal for DSGE models solved up to third order. These properties are verified in a Monte Carlo study for a DSGE model solved to second and third order with structural shocks that are Gaussian, Laplace distributed, or display stochastic volatility.
