This paper considers semiparametric efficient estimation of conditional moment models with possibly nonsmooth residuals in unknown parametric components (θ) and unknown functions (h) of endogenous variables. We show that: (1) the penalized sieve minimum distance (PSMD) estimator can simultaneously achieve root-n asymptotic normality of and nonparametric optimal convergence rate of , allowing for noncompact function parameter spaces; (2) a simple weighted bootstrap procedure consistently estimates the limiting distribution of the PSMD ; (3) the semiparametric efficiency bound formula of [Ai, C., Chen, X., 2003. Efficient estimation of models with conditional moment restrictions containing unknown functions. Econometrica, 71, 1795–1843] remains valid for conditional models with nonsmooth residuals, and the optimally weighted PSMD estimator achieves the bound; (4) the centered, profiled optimally weighted PSMD criterion is asymptotically chi-square distributed. We illustrate our theories using a partially linear quantile instrumental variables (IV) regression, a Monte Carlo study, and an empirical estimation of the shape-invariant quantile IV Engel curves.  相似文献

Quantile regression techniques have been widely used in empirical economics. In this paper, we consider the estimation of a generalized quantile regression model when data are subject to fixed or random censoring. Through a discretization technique, we transform the censored regression model into a sequence of binary choice models and further propose an integrated smoothed maximum score estimator by combining individual binary choice models, following the insights of Horowitz (1992) and Manski (1985). Unlike the estimators of Horowitz (1992) and Manski (1985), our estimators converge at the usual parametric rate through an integration process. In the case of fixed censoring, our approach overcomes a major drawback of existing approaches associated with the curse-of-dimensionality problem. Our approach for the fixed censored case can be extended readily to the case with random censoring for which other existing approaches are no longer applicable. Both of our estimators are consistent and asymptotically normal. A simulation study demonstrates that our estimators perform well in finite samples.  相似文献

This paper considers binary response models where errors are uncorrelated with a set of instrumental variables and are independent of a continuous regressor vv, conditional on all other variables. It is shown that these exclusion restrictions are not sufficient for identification and that additional identifying assumptions are needed. Such an assumption, introduced by Lewbel [Semiparametric qualitative response model estimation with unknown heteroskedasticity or instrumental variables. Journal of Econometrics 97, 145–177], is that the support of the continuous regressor is large, but we show that it significantly restricts the class of binary phenomena which can be analysed. We propose an alternative additional assumption under which ββ remains just identified and the estimation unchanged. This alternative assumption does not impose specific restrictions on the data, which broadens the scope of the estimation method in empirical work. The semiparametric efficiency bound of the model is also established and an existing estimator is shown to achieve that bound. The efficient estimator uses a plug-in density estimate. It is shown that plugging in the true density rather than an estimate is inefficient. Extensions to ordered choice models are provided.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the statistical inference on seemingly unrelated varying coefficient partially linear models. By combining the local polynomial and profile least squares techniques, and estimating the contemporaneous correlation, we propose a class of weighted profile least squares estimators (WPLSEs) for the parametric components. It is shown that the WPLSEs achieve the semiparametric efficiency bound and are asymptotically normal. For the non‐parametric components, by applying the undersmoothing technique, and taking the contemporaneous correlation into account, we propose an efficient local polynomial estimation. The resulting estimators are shown to have mean‐squared errors smaller than those estimators that neglect the contemporaneous correlation. In addition, a class of variable selection procedures is developed for simultaneously selecting significant variables and estimating unknown parameters, based on the non‐concave penalized and weighted profile least squares techniques. With a proper choice of regularization parameters and penalty functions, the proposed variable selection procedures perform as efficiently as if one knew the true submodels. The proposed methods are evaluated using wide simulation studies and applied to a set of real data.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider temporal aggregation of volatility models. We introduce semiparametric volatility models, termed square-root stochastic autoregressive volatility (SR-SARV), which are characterized by autoregressive dynamics of the stochastic variance. Our class encompasses the usual GARCH models and various asymmetric GARCH models. Moreover, our stochastic volatility models are characterized by multiperiod conditional moment restrictions in terms of observables. The SR-SARV class is a natural extension of the class of weak GARCH models. This extension has four advantages: (i) we do not assume that fourth moments are finite; (ii) we allow for asymmetries (skewness, leverage effect) that are excluded from weak GARCH models; (iii) we derive conditional moment restrictions and (iv) our framework allows us to study temporal aggregation of IGARCH models.  相似文献

We present a variety of semiparametric models that produce bounds on the average causal effect of a binary treatment on a binary outcome. The semiparametric assumptions exploit variation in observable covariates to narrow the bounds. In our main model, the outcome is determined by a generalized linear model, but the treatment may be arbitrarily endogenous. Our bounding strategy does not require the existence of an instrument, but incorporating an instrument narrows the bounds. The bounds are further improved by combining the semiparametric model with the joint threshold-crossing assumption of Shaikh and Vytlacil (2005).  相似文献

This paper studies conditional moment restrictions that contain unknown nonparametric functions, and proposes a general method of obtaining asymptotically distribution-free tests via martingale transforms. Examples of such conditional moment restrictions are single index restrictions, partially parametric regressions, and partially parametric quantile regressions. This paper introduces a conditional martingale transform that is conditioned on the variable in the nonparametric function, and shows that we can generate distribution-free tests of various semiparametric conditional moment restrictions using this martingale transform. The paper proposes feasible martingale transforms using series estimation and establishes their asymptotic validity. Some results from a Monte Carlo simulation study are presented and discussed.  相似文献

We study the problem of building confidence sets for ratios of parameters, from an identification robust perspective. In particular, we address the simultaneous confidence set estimation of a finite number of ratios. Results apply to a wide class of models suitable for estimation by consistent asymptotically normal procedures. Conventional methods (e.g. the delta method) derived by excluding the parameter discontinuity regions entailed by the ratio functions and which typically yield bounded confidence limits, break down even if the sample size is large ( Dufour, 1997). One solution to this problem, which we take in this paper, is to use variants of  Fieller’s ( 1940, 1954) method. By inverting a joint test that does not require identifying the ratios, Fieller-based confidence regions are formed for the full set of ratios. Simultaneous confidence sets for individual ratios are then derived by applying projection techniques, which allow for possibly unbounded outcomes. In this paper, we provide simple explicit closed-form analytical solutions for projection-based simultaneous confidence sets, in the case of linear transformations of ratios. Our solution further provides a formal proof for the expressions in Zerbe et al. (1982) pertaining to individual ratios. We apply the geometry of quadrics as introduced by  and , in a different although related context. The confidence sets so obtained are exact if the inverted test statistic admits a tractable exact distribution, for instance in the normal linear regression context. The proposed procedures are applied and assessed via illustrative Monte Carlo and empirical examples, with a focus on discrete choice models estimated by exact or simulation-based maximum likelihood. Our results underscore the superiority of Fieller-based methods.  相似文献

This paper extends the familiar notion of fixed effects to nonlinear structures with infinite-dimensional unobservables, like preferences. The main result is that a generalized version of differencing identifies local average responses (LARs) in nonseparable structures. In contrast to existing results, this does not require either substantial restrictions on functional form or independence between the persistent unobservables and the explanatory variables of interest, and it requires only two time periods. On the other hand, the results are confined to the subpopulation of “stayers” (Chamberlain, 1982), i.e., the population for which the explanatory variables do not change over time. We extend the basic framework to include time trends and dynamics in the explanatory variables, and we show how distributional effects as well as average partial effects are identified. Our approach also allows endogeneity in the transitory unobservables. Furthermore, we show that this new identification principle can be applied to well-known objects like the slope coefficient in the semiparametric panel data binary choice model with fixed effects. Finally, we suggest estimators for the local average response and average partial effect, and we analyze their large- and finite-sample behavior.  相似文献

I consider a semiparametric version of the nonseparable triangular model of Chesher [Chesher, A., 2003. Identification in nonseparable models. Econometrica 71, 1405–1441]. The proposed model is linear in coefficients, where the coefficients are unknown functions of unobserved latent variables. Using a control variable idea and quantile regression methods, I propose a simple two-step estimator for the coefficients evaluated at particular values of the latent variables. Under the condition that the instruments are locally relevant (i.e. they affect a particular conditional quantile of interest of the endogenous variable) I establish consistency and asymptotic normality. Simulation experiments confirm the theoretical results.  相似文献

In this paper estimators for distribution free heteroskedastic binary response models are proposed. The estimation procedures are based on relationships between distribution free models with a conditional median restriction and parametric models (such as Probit/Logit) exhibiting (multiplicative) heteroskedasticity. The first proposed estimator is based on the observational equivalence between the two models, and is a semiparametric sieve estimator (see, e.g. Gallant and Nychka (1987), Ai and Chen (2003) and Chen et al. (2005)) for the regression coefficients, based on maximizing standard Logit/Probit criterion functions, such as NLLS and MLE. This procedure has the advantage that choice probabilities and regression coefficients are estimated simultaneously. The second proposed procedure is based on the equivalence between existing semiparametric estimators for the conditional median model (,  and ) and the standard parametric (Probit/Logit) NLLS estimator. This estimator has the advantage of being implementable with standard software packages such as Stata. Distribution theory is developed for both estimators and a Monte Carlo study indicates they both perform well in finite samples.  相似文献

We propose non-nested hypothesis tests for conditional moment restriction models based on the method of generalized empirical likelihood (GEL). By utilizing the implied GEL probabilities from a sequence of unconditional moment restrictions that contains equivalent information of the conditional moment restrictions, we construct Kolmogorov–Smirnov and Cramér–von Mises type moment encompassing tests. Advantages of our tests over Otsu and Whang’s (2011) tests are: (i) they are free from smoothing parameters, (ii) they can be applied to weakly dependent data, and (iii) they allow non-smooth moment functions. We derive the null distributions, validity of a bootstrap procedure, and local and global power properties of our tests. The simulation results show that our tests have reasonable size and power performance in finite samples.  相似文献

Newey and Powell [2003. Instrumental variable estimation of nonparametric models. Econometrica 71, 1565–1578] and Ai and Chen [2003. Efficient estimation of conditional moment restrictions models containing unknown functions. Econometrica 71, 1795–1843] propose sieve minimum distance (SMD) estimation of both finite dimensional parameter (θ)(θ) and infinite dimensional parameter (h) that are identified through a conditional moment restriction model, in which h could depend on endogenous variables. This paper modifies their SMD procedure to allow for different conditioning variables to be used in different equations, and derives the asymptotic properties when the model may be misspecified  . Under low-level sufficient conditions, we show that: (i) the modified SMD estimators of both θθ and h   converge to some pseudo-true values in probability; (ii) the SMD estimators of smooth functionals, including the θθ estimator and the average derivative estimator, are asymptotically normally distributed; and (iii) the estimators for the asymptotic covariances of the SMD estimators of smooth functionals are consistent and easy to compute. These results allow for asymptotically valid tests of various hypotheses on the smooth functionals regardless of whether the semiparametric model is correctly specified or not.  相似文献

The existing semiparametric estimation literature has mainly focused on univariate Tobit models and no semiparametric estimation has been considered for bivariate Tobit models. In this paper, we consider semiparametric estimation of the bivariate Tobit model proposed by Amemiya (1974), under the independence condition without imposing any parametric restriction on the error distribution. Our estimator is shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal, and simulation results show that our estimator performs well in finite samples. It is also worth noting that while Amemiya’s (1974) instrumental variables estimator (IV) requires the normality assumption, our semiparametric estimator actually outperforms his IV estimator even when normality holds. Our approach can be extended to higher dimensional multivariate Tobit models.  相似文献

This paper proposes a semiparametric smooth-varying coefficient input distance frontier model with multiple outputs and multiple inputs, panel data, and determinants of technical inefficiency for the Indonesian banking industry during the period 2000 to 2015. The technology parameters are unknown functions of a set of environmental factors that shift the input distance frontier non-neutrally. The computationally simple constraint weighted bootstrapping method is employed to impose the regularity constraints on the distance function. As a by-product, total factor productivity (TFP) growth is estimated and decomposed into technical change, scale component, and efficiency change. The distance elasticities, marginal effects of the environmental factors on the distance elasticities, temporal behavior of technical efficiency, and also TFP growth and its components are investigated.

In this paper we consider the problem of semiparametric efficient estimation in conditional quantile models with time series data. We construct an M-estimator which achieves the semiparametric efficiency bound recently derived by Komunjer and Vuong (forthcoming). Our efficient M-estimator is obtained by minimizing an objective function which depends on a nonparametric estimator of the conditional distribution of the variable of interest rather than its density. The estimator is new and not yet seen in the literature. We illustrate its performance through a Monte Carlo experiment.  相似文献

Previous work on the preferred specification of hedonic price models usually recommended a Box-Cox model. In this paper we note that any parametric model involves implicit restrictions and they can be reduced by using a semiparametric model. We estimate a benchmark parametric model which passes several common specification tests, before showing that a semiparametric model outperforms it significantly. In addition to estimating the model, we compare the predictions of the models by deriving the distribution of the predicted log(price) and then calculating the associated prediction intervals. Our data show that the semiparametric model provides more accurate mean predictions than the benchmark parametric model.  相似文献

We propose a simple estimator for nonlinear method of moment models with measurement error of the classical type when no additional data, such as validation data or double measurements, are available. We assume that the marginal distributions of the measurement errors are Laplace (double exponential) with zero means and unknown variances and the measurement errors are independent of the latent variables and are independent of each other. Under these assumptions, we derive simple revised moment conditions in terms of the observed variables. They are used to make inference about the model parameters and the variance of the measurement error. The results of this paper show that the distributional assumption on the measurement errors can be used to point identify the parameters of interest. Our estimator is a parametric method of moments estimator that uses the revised moment conditions and hence is simple to compute. Our estimation method is particularly useful in situations where no additional data are available, which is the case in many economic data sets. Simulation study demonstrates good finite sample properties of our proposed estimator. We also examine the performance of the estimator in the case where the error distribution is misspecified.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the large sample efficiency of the asymptotic least-squares (ALS) estimators introduced by Gouriéroux, Monfort, and Trognon (1982, 1985) and Chamberlain (1982, 1984). We show how the efficiency of these estimators is affected when additional information is incorporated into the estimation procedure. The relationship between ALS and maximum likelihood is discussed. It is shown that ALS can be used to obtain asymptotically efficient estimates for a large range of econometric models. Many results from the literature on estimation are special cases of the framework adopted in this paper. An application of ALS to a dynamic rational expections factor demand model in the manufacturing sector in The Netherlands demonstrates the potential of the method in the estimation of the parameters in models which are subject to nonlinear cross-equation restrictions.  相似文献

This paper investigates statistical properties of the local generalized method of moments (LGMM) estimator for some time series models defined by conditional moment restrictions. First, we consider Markov processes with possible conditional heteroskedasticity of unknown forms and establish the consistency, asymptotic normality, and semi-parametric efficiency of the LGMM estimator. Second, we undertake a higher-order asymptotic expansion and demonstrate that the LGMM estimator possesses some appealing bias reduction properties for positively autocorrelated processes. Our analysis of the asymptotic expansion of the LGMM estimator reveals an interesting contrast with the OLS estimator that helps to shed light on the nature of the bias correction performed by the LGMM estimator. The practical importance of these findings is evaluated in terms of a bond and option pricing exercise based on a diffusion model for spot interest rate.  相似文献
