We develop an improved method to obtain the model-free volatility more accurately despite the limitations of a finite number of options and large strike price intervals. Our method computes the model-free volatility from European-style S&P 100 index options over a horizon of up to 450 days, the first time that this has been attempted, as far as we are aware. With the estimated daily term structure over the long horizon, we find that (i) changes in model-free volatilities are asymmetrically more positively impacted by a decrease in the index level than negatively impacted by an increase in the index level; (ii) the negative relationship between the daily change in model-free volatility and the daily change in index level is stronger in the near term than in the far term; and (iii) the slope of the term structure is positively associated with the index level, having a tendency to display a negative slope during bear markets and a positive slope during bull markets. These significant results have important implications for pricing and hedging index derivatives and portfolios.  相似文献

This study considers the linkage of the Russian equity market to the world market, examining the international transmission of the Russia's 1998 financial crisis utilizing the GARCH–BEKK model proposed by Engle and Kroner [Engle, R.F., Kroner, K.F., 1995. Multivariate simultaneous generalized ARCH. Economet. Theor. 11, 122–150]. We find evidence of direct linkage between the Russian equity market with regards to returns and volatility, while the weakness of the linkage suggests that the Russian equity market was only partially integrated into the world market. At the time of the crisis, evidence of contagion is clear.  相似文献

Volatility clustering is a well-known stylized feature of financial asset returns. This paper investigates asymmetric pattern in volatility clustering by employing a univariate copula approach of Chen and Fan (2006). Using daily realized kernel volatilities constructed from high frequency data from stock and foreign exchange markets, we find evidence that volatility clustering is highly nonlinear and strongly asymmetric in that clusters of high volatility occur more often than clusters of low volatility. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first one to address and uncover this phenomenon. In particular, the asymmetry in volatility clustering is found to be more pronounced in the stock markets than in the foreign exchange markets. Further, the volatility clusters are shown to remain persistent for over a month and asymmetric across different time periods. Our findings have important implications for risk management. A simulation study indicates that models which accommodate asymmetric volatility clustering can significantly improve the out-of-sample forecasts of Value-at-Risk.  相似文献

A multiple-regime threshold generalized autoregressive conditionally heteroskedastic capital asset pricing model is introduced. The model captures asymmetric risk through allowing market beta to change discretely between regimes that are driven by market information. Asymmetric volatility and mean equation dynamics are also captured. We confirm the time-varying nature of market risk, in response to changes in the market, and that this discrete time variation can differ across assets. These findings could have important implications for optimizing investment decisions: e.g. in risk assessment, portfolio selection and hedging decisions.  相似文献

This paper proposes a new approach to measure dependencies in multivariate financial data. Data in finance and insurance often cover a long time period. Therefore, the economic factors may induce some changes within the dependence structure. Recently, two methods have been proposed using copulas to analyse such changes. The first approach investigates changes within the parameters of the copula. The second determines the sequence of copulas using moving windows. In this paper we take into account the non-stationarity of the data and analyse the impact of (1) time-varying parameters for a copula family, and (2) the sequence of copulas, on the computations of the VaR and ES measures. We propose tests based on conditional copulas and the goodness-of-fit to decide the type of change, and further give the corresponding change analysis. We illustrate our approach using the Standard & Poor 500 and Nasdaq indices in order to compute risk measures using the two previous methods.  相似文献

Using a multivariate generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH-M) model, we investigate volatility spillovers in six Southeast Asian stock markets around the time of the 1997 Asian crisis. We focus on interactions with the U.S. market as a world financial market, and with the Japanese market as a regional financial market. We also use bivariate GARCH-M models to examine the behavior of individual markets and their interactions with other markets in the region. All models lend support to the idea of the "Asian contagion," which started in Thailand and rapidly spread to other markets.  相似文献

本文利用中国1992-2011年间的时间序列和协整分析方法,实证考察了我国社会保障支出对金融结构变迁的影响效果。结果显示社会保障支出显著地影响金融结构的变迁,不断增加的社会保障支出能够显著地提升股票、债券、保险等非货币资产在金融机构总资产中的占比;社会保障支出是引起股票资产占比、债券资产占比、保险资产占比的格兰杰原因,反之,股票资产占比、债券资产占比、保险资产占比不是引起社会保障支出变动的格兰杰原因。  相似文献

In this article we propose a method to compute the density of the arithmetic average of a Markov process. This approach is then applied to the pricing of average rate options (Asian options). It is demonstrated that as long as a closed form formula is available for the discount bond price when the underlying process is treated as the riskless interest rate, analytical formulas for the density function of the arithmetic average and the Asian option price can be derived. This includes the affine class of term structure models. The Cox et al. (1985) square root interest rate process is used as an example. When the underlying process follows a geometric Brownian motion, a very efficient numerical method is proposed for computing the density function of the average. Extensions of the techniques to the cases of multiple state variables are also discussed.   相似文献

This note explores how foreign ownership and participation affect the volatility dynamics of individual stocks in Indonesia. After controlling for size and turnover, we show that stocks with high foreign holdings have greater volatility persistence and lead other stocks in the daily volatility changes. The finding holds during and after the Asian financial crisis, and is consistent with domestic investors mimicking foreign trading.   相似文献

Whether or not there is a unit root persistence in volatility of financial assets has been a long-standing topic of interest to financial econometricians and empirical economists. The purpose of this article is to provide a Bayesian approach for testing the volatility persistence in the context of stochastic volatility with Merton jump and correlated Merton jump. The Shanghai Composite Index daily return data is used for empirical illustration. The result of Bayesian hypothesis testing strongly indicates that the volatility process doesn’t have unit root volatility persistence in this stock market.  相似文献
