In this study, we suggest pretest and shrinkage methods based on the generalised ridge regression estimation that is suitable for both multicollinear and high-dimensional problems. We review and develop theoretical results for some of the shrinkage estimators. The relative performance of the shrinkage estimators to some penalty methods is compared and assessed by both simulation and real-data analysis. We show that the suggested methods can be accounted as good competitors to regularisation techniques, by means of a mean squared error of estimation and prediction error. A thorough comparison of pretest and shrinkage estimators based on the maximum likelihood method to the penalty methods. In this paper, we extend the comparison outlined in his work using the least squares method for the generalised ridge regression.  相似文献

A bivariate exponentiated‐exponential geometric regression model that allows negative, zero, or positive correlation is defined and studied. The model can accommodate under‐ or over‐dispersed count data. The regression model is based on the univariate exponentiated‐exponential geometric distribution, and the marginal means of the bivariate model are functions of the explanatory variables. The parameters of the bivariate regression model are estimated by using the maximum likelihood method. Some test statistics including goodness of fit are discussed. A simulation study is conducted to compare the model with the bivariate generalized Poisson regression model. One numerical data set is used to illustrate the application of the regression model.  相似文献

We consider estimation of the regression coefficients in the multivariate positive stable frailty model with Weibull marginals introduced by Hougaard (1986) . For general cluster sizes and various covariate patterns, we study the efficiency, relative to full maximum likelihood, of estimation from the independence working model and from the fixed effects model.  相似文献

It is well known that the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is inadmissible when estimating the multidimensional Gaussian location parameter. We show that the verdict is much more subtle for the binary location parameter. We consider this problem in a regression framework by considering a ridge logistic regression (RR) with three alternative ways of shrinking the estimates of the event probabilities. While it is shown that all three variants reduce the mean squared error (MSE) of the MLE, there is at the same time, for every amount of shrinkage, a true value of the location parameter for which we are overshrinking, thus implying the minimaxity of the MLE in this family of estimators. Little shrinkage also always reduces the MSE of individual predictions for all three RR estimators; however, only the naive estimator that shrinks toward 1/2 retains this property for any generalized MSE (GMSE). In contrast, for the two RR estimators that shrink toward the common mean probability, there is always a GMSE for which even a minute amount of shrinkage increases the error. These theoretical results are illustrated on a numerical example. The estimators are also applied to a real data set, and practical implications of our results are discussed.  相似文献

We consider moment based estimation methods for estimating parameters of the negative binomial distribution that are almost as efficient as maximum likelihood estimation and far superior to the celebrated zero term method and the standard method of moments estimator. Maximum likelihood estimators are difficult to compute for dependent samples such as samples generated from the negative binomial first-order autoregressive integer-valued processes. The power method of estimation is suggested as an alternative to maximum likelihood estimation for such samples and a comparison is made of the asymptotic normalized variance between the power method, method of moments and zero term method estimators.  相似文献

This paper proposes an alternative to maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the censored regression (or censored ‘Tobit’) model. The proposed estimator is a generalization of least absolute deviations estimation for the standard linear model, and, unlike estimation methods based on the assumption of normally distributed error terms, the estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal for a wide class of error distributions, and is also robust to heteroscedasticity. The paper gives the regularity conditions and proofs of these large-sample results, and proposes classes of consistent estimators of the asymptotic covariance matrix for both homoscedastic and heteroscedastic disturbances.  相似文献

In a seminal paper, Mak, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society B, 55, 1993, 945, derived an efficient algorithm for solving non‐linear unbiased estimation equations. In this paper, we show that when Mak's algorithm is applied to biased estimation equations, it results in the estimates that would come from solving a bias‐corrected estimation equation, making it a consistent estimator if regularity conditions hold. In addition, the properties that Mak established for his algorithm also apply in the case of biased estimation equations but for estimates from the bias‐corrected equations. The marginal likelihood estimator is obtained when the approach is applied to both maximum likelihood and least squares estimation of the covariance matrix parameters in the general linear regression model. The new approach results in two new estimators when applied to the profile and marginal likelihood functions for estimating the lagged dependent variable coefficient in the dynamic linear regression model. Monte Carlo simulation results show the new approach leads to a better estimator when applied to the standard profile likelihood. It is therefore recommended for situations in which standard estimators are known to be biased.  相似文献

In this paper, we discuss the statistical inference of the lifetime distribution of components based on observing the system lifetimes when the system structure is known. A general proportional hazard rate model for the lifetime of the components is considered, which includes some commonly used lifetime distributions. Different estimation methods—method of moments, maximum likelihood method and least squares method—for the proportionality parameter are discussed. The conditions for existence and uniqueness of method of moments and maximum likelihood estimators are presented. Then, we focus on a special case when the lifetime distributions of the components are exponential. Computational formulas for point and interval estimations of the unknown mean lifetime of the components are provided. A Monte Carlo simulation study is used to compare the performance of these estimation methods and recommendations are made based on these results. Finally, an example is provided to illustrate the methods proposed in this paper.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the large sample efficiency of the asymptotic least-squares (ALS) estimators introduced by Gouriéroux, Monfort, and Trognon (1982, 1985) and Chamberlain (1982, 1984). We show how the efficiency of these estimators is affected when additional information is incorporated into the estimation procedure. The relationship between ALS and maximum likelihood is discussed. It is shown that ALS can be used to obtain asymptotically efficient estimates for a large range of econometric models. Many results from the literature on estimation are special cases of the framework adopted in this paper. An application of ALS to a dynamic rational expections factor demand model in the manufacturing sector in The Netherlands demonstrates the potential of the method in the estimation of the parameters in models which are subject to nonlinear cross-equation restrictions.  相似文献

The generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) extends classical regression analysis to non-normal, correlated response data. Because inference for GLMMs can be computationally difficult, simplifying distributional assumptions are often made. We focus on the robustness of estimators when a main component of the model, the random effects distribution, is misspecified. Results for the maximum likelihood estimators of the Poisson inverse Gaussian model are presented.  相似文献

This paper analyzes spatial Probit models for cross sectional dependent data in a binary choice context. Observations are divided by pairwise groups and bivariate normal distributions are specified within each group. Partial maximum likelihood estimators are introduced and they are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal under some regularity conditions. Consistent covariance matrix estimators are also provided. Estimates of average partial effects can also be obtained once we characterize the conditional distribution of the latent error. Finally, a simulation study shows the advantages of our new estimation procedure in this setting. Our proposed partial maximum likelihood estimators are shown to be more efficient than the generalized method of moments counterparts.  相似文献

We consider nonlinear heteroscedastic single‐index models where the mean function is a parametric nonlinear model and the variance function depends on a single‐index structure. We develop an efficient estimation method for the parameters in the mean function by using the weighted least squares estimation, and we propose a “delete‐one‐component” estimator for the single‐index in the variance function based on absolute residuals. Asymptotic results of estimators are also investigated. The estimation methods for the error distribution based on the classical empirical distribution function and an empirical likelihood method are discussed. The empirical likelihood method allows for incorporation of the assumptions on the error distribution into the estimation. Simulations illustrate the results, and a real chemical data set is analyzed to demonstrate the performance of the proposed estimators.  相似文献

We consider improved estimation strategies for the parameter matrix in multivariate multiple regression under a general and natural linear constraint. In the context of two competing models where one model includes all predictors and the other restricts variable coefficients to a candidate linear subspace based on prior information, there is a need of combining two estimation techniques in an optimal way. In this scenario, we suggest some shrinkage estimators for the targeted parameter matrix. Also, we examine the relative performances of the suggested estimators in the direction of the subspace and candidate subspace restricted type estimators. We develop a large sample theory for the estimators including derivation of asymptotic bias and asymptotic distributional risk of the suggested estimators. Furthermore, we conduct Monte Carlo simulation studies to appraise the relative performance of the suggested estimators with the classical estimators. The methods are also applied on a real data set for illustrative purposes.  相似文献

In this article, we propose a mean linear regression model where the response variable is inverse gamma distributed using a new parameterization of this distribution that is indexed by mean and precision parameters. The main advantage of our new parametrization is the straightforward interpretation of the regression coefficients in terms of the expectation of the positive response variable, as usual in the context of generalized linear models. The variance function of the proposed model has a quadratic form. The inverse gamma distribution is a member of the exponential family of distributions and has some distributions commonly used for parametric models in survival analysis as special cases. We compare the proposed model to several alternatives and illustrate its advantages and usefulness. With a generalized linear model approach that takes advantage of exponential family properties, we discuss model estimation (by maximum likelihood), black further inferential quantities and diagnostic tools. A Monte Carlo experiment is conducted to evaluate the performances of these estimators in finite samples with a discussion of the obtained results. A real application using minerals data set collected by Department of Mines of the University of Atacama, Chile, is considered to demonstrate the practical potential of the proposed model.  相似文献

We compare five methods for parameter estimation of a Poisson regression model for clustered data: (1) ordinary (naive) Poisson regression (OP), which ignores intracluster correlation, (2) Poisson regression with fixed cluster‐specific intercepts (FI), (3) a generalized estimating equations (GEE) approach with an equi‐correlation matrix, (4) an exact generalized estimating equations (EGEE) approach with an exact covariance matrix, and (5) maximum likelihood (ML). Special attention is given to the simplest case of the Poisson regression with a cluster‐specific intercept random when the asymptotic covariance matrix is obtained in closed form. We prove that methods 1–5, except GEE, produce the same estimates of slope coefficients for balanced data (an equal number of observations in each cluster and the same vectors of covariates). All five methods lead to consistent estimates of slopes but have different efficiency for unbalanced data design. It is shown that the FI approach can be derived as a limiting case of maximum likelihood when the cluster variance increases to infinity. Exact asymptotic covariance matrices are derived for each method. In terms of asymptotic efficiency, the methods split into two groups: OP & GEE and EGEE & FI & ML. Thus, contrary to the existing practice, there is no advantage in using GEE because it is substantially outperformed by EGEE and FI. In particular, EGEE does not require integration and is easy to compute with the asymptotic variances of the slope estimates close to those of the ML.  相似文献

Economists frequently encounter data which are subject to different temporal aggregation. In this paper we give a maximum likelihood approach to these problems with a minimum of mathematical manipulation. We show that the best prediction of the data by related series and efficient estimation of parameters are inseparable. The relative efficiency of the maximum likelihood estimator to other estimators are also indicated.  相似文献

Mixture regression models have been widely used in business, marketing and social sciences to model mixed regression relationships arising from a clustered and thus heterogeneous population. The unknown mixture regression parameters are usually estimated by maximum likelihood estimators using the expectation–maximisation algorithm based on the normality assumption of component error density. However, it is well known that the normality-based maximum likelihood estimation is very sensitive to outliers or heavy-tailed error distributions. This paper aims to give a selective overview of the recently proposed robust mixture regression methods and compare their performance using simulation studies.  相似文献

This paper studies semiparametric maximum likelihood estimators in the Cox proportional hazards model with covariate error, assuming that the conditional distribution of the true covariate given the surrogate is known. We show that the estimator of the regression coefficient is asymptotically normal and efficient, its covariance matrix can be estimated consistently by differentiation of the profile likelihood, and the likelihood ratio test is asymptotically chi-squared. We also provide efficient algorithms for the computations of the semiparametric maximum likelihood estimate and the profile likelihood. The performance of this method is successfully demonstrated in simulation studies.  相似文献

Under certain conditions, a broad class of qualitative and limited dependent variable models can be consistently estimated by the method of moments using a non-iterative correction to the ordinary least squares estimator, with only a small loss of efficiency compared to maximum likelihood estimation. The class of models is that obtained from a classical multinormal regression by any type of censoring or truncation and includes the tobit, probit, two-limit probit, truncated regression, and some variants of the sample selection models. The paper derives the estimators and their asymptotic covariance matrices.  相似文献
