The article addresses two questions related with tourism as a service trade. Can tourism be explained as other export activities? Does service liberalisation have a positive or negative impact on tourism receipts in destination countries? Previous research has either focused on the demand side factors (i.e. factors of demand in the origin countries) or on tourism as a long-run factor of economic growth. The research shows that a complementary perspective such as that offered by trade in a supply side perspective can render additional insights towards understanding tourism. This approach can explain why countries have absolute and comparative advantage. Another finding is that tourism as an export can be explained by some of the same destination factors that explain other service exports. Using different panel estimators the importance of supply side factors that are to some extent exclusive to tourism are demonstrated: the general price competitiveness of the destination, tourism infrastructure and the provision of safety. The econometric models also confirm the relevance of other conventional explanatory factors of trade in services such as GDP per capita and internet usage. The last part of the article analyses the welfare gains from trade under the general agreement on trade in services (GATS). The revenue (tourism receipt) effect is decomposed into a volume (arrival) and price effect. Results suggest that liberalisers under the GATS gained especially from a volume effect with average higher growth rates in the number of arrivals. There is also found to be a positive effect on the average income earned per tourist from being a liberaliser. 相似文献

The effects of credit supply shocks on the exports of services are not clear a priori. On the one hand, services need lower initial investment in physical capital than manufacturing. On the other hand, competitiveness for exporting services requires investments in intangible capital and in product customisation that may be subject to credit frictions. Using Italian matched bank–firm data and focusing on the sovereign debt crisis, we find an elasticity of services exports to credit supply, between 0.3 and 0.4. The effects of credit shocks are especially relevant for firms exporting complex services to countries with weaker institutions and for services that are not the main product of the firms. Overall, our results suggest that credit supply plays a relevant role for exporting services during crises. 相似文献

文章借助Novy(2006)改进的引力模型测度2000~2008年中国与OECD国家的双边服务贸易成本。从测算的结果来看,中国与OECD国家的双边服务贸易成本在总体上经历了平缓下降的过程。绝大部分OECD国家与中国的双边服务贸易成本呈现了不同程度的下降趋势,与此同时部分国家的服务贸易成本却基本保持不变甚至略有上升。文章利用随机效应模型,从实证研究的角度对服务贸易成本进行分解,进而探讨了影响双边服务贸易成本的各种影响因素,最后揭示了研究的政策性涵义。 相似文献

近年来我国服务贸易取得较快发展,运输、旅游等传统服务贸易增长迅速,但对外技术贸易发展还不尽如人意,与此同时仍存在逆差严重、整体竞争力不足,服务贸易内部结构不合理,出口地及目的地分布不均衡等问题。为解决这些问题,企业应加速自主创新及产业结构优化,加快品牌建设及人才培养,提高服务业信息化水平;政府应进一步构建促进服务贸易发展的管理体系,大力培育新兴服务贸易,建立健全服务贸易法律体系,以促进我国服务贸易持续健康发展。 相似文献

This paper looks at market access and national treatment commitments for services in the General Agreement on Trade in Services (GATS) and in 95 regional trade agreements (RTAs) involving the countries that are covered in the OECD Services Trade Restrictiveness Index (STRI). The objective is to quantify the impact of legal bindings on trade in services that result from a reduction in the uncertainty faced by exporters. Bilateral bindings indices are created for five broad service sectors (professional services, computer services, telecoms, financial services and transport services). They indicate how close the sector is from a fully bound regime with no possibility to introduce any new trade barrier, by comparing commitments with the actual trade regime. These bilateral indices are then tested over the period 2000–2014 in a structural gravity model. Despite differences across sectors, the results confirm that the legal bindings typically found in services trade agreements tend to have a positive impact on exports even if no actual liberalisation takes place. 相似文献

Globalised firms manage face-to-face contacts for distant communications. Based on our survey on the responses of Japanese firms to the COVID-19 pandemic, we find that firms that exported, imported, or directly invested abroad more before the pandemic tend to adopt remote work significantly more frequently during the pandemic. We confirm this relationship even after controlling for compositions of occupations, and various firm attributes. The effect of arm's-length trade, not intra-firm trade, is especially evident. These suggest that pre-pandemic experiences in coordinating across borders are likely to facilitate the adoption of remote work during the pandemic. 相似文献

近年来,国际服务贸易在全球经济结构转化大趋势下得以迅猛发展,相对而言,浙江省国际服务贸易发展相对滞后。采用浙江省1995年~2010年国际服务贸易和GDP的数据建立模型,分析结果发现浙江省国际服务贸易进口和出口与GDP之间存在正向相关性,国际服务贸易进口对国民经济增长的贡献要比出口大,对经济增长的拉动作用更明显。 相似文献

促进服务贸易出口已经成为我国“十二五”时期重要的对外经济发展战略,而周期波动分析是考察和检测服务贸易出口运行态势的重要方法,但相关研究文献几乎还是空白.基于增长率直接法和增长率趋势法对中国服务贸易出口短周期、中周期、中长周期波动的识别和分析表明,1982年以来我国服务贸易出口经历了11次短周期波动、3次中周期波动和2次中长周期波动.随着经济全球化的不断深化,加强服务贸易出口周期波动和服务贸易出口预警方面的理论研究成为一项艰巨而重要的任务. 相似文献

Every year, the United States evaluates the protection of intellectual property rights in foreign markets in the context of its Special 301 review. U.S. trading partners that are found to provide inadequate protection are designated as priority countries. This article quantifies the increase in U.S. receipts of royalties and license fees from countries after they were designated as Special 301 priorities, using an econometric model of U.S. royalty receipts from 33 countries over the period 2001–2008. The priority designations between 2001 and 2007 are associated with a cumulative $5.4 billion increase in annual U.S. royalty receipts. 相似文献

In the now extensive literature on the convergence of real per capita output across countries over time, there is surprisingly little attention paid to the role of international trade. Some recent studies have illustrated that standard trade theories provide no clear prediction as to the impact of trade liberalization on output convergence. These studies have also provided somewhat ambiguous empirical evidence regarding this relationship, under-scoring the need for additional results in this area. This paper uses both standard and new approaches to testing for convergence in order to explore the extent to which the degree of trade openness may affect output convergence among countries. Using annual time-series data for 88 countries from the Penn World Table, we obtain somewhat mixed results, but on balance they are quite supportive of a positive relationship (though not necessarily causality) between trade openness and output convergence. Our results also suggest certain directions for further research that would shed more light on this important issue. 相似文献

Communication costs are frequently cited as an important determinant of trade costs. We test this relationship by incorporating alternative measures of communication costs in a model of bilateral trade. We find that international variations in communication costs indeed have a significant influence on trade patterns. Furthermore, estimates using disaggregated data reveal that communication costs are more important for trade in differentiated products than for trade in homogenous products. 相似文献
