Will Rio stick: Barriers to global cooperation on CO2 abatement?

The Rio Earth Summit resulted in commitments to reduce CO₂ emissions from all industrialized countries, but there are many banners to overcome before its full objectives can be met. One major obstacle is carbon leakage, the increase in developing country emissions predicted as a result of OECD policies for abatement. Causes of carbon leakage are discussed here and its magnitude assessed. The effect is found to be relatively small - nevertheless, in the long run policies that provide incentives for CO₂ abatement globally will become imperative.

鼻炎电子治疗仪的设计及使用

研究目的是根据电子治疗仪引起的物理化学变化的特点,使经络疏通,气血调和,从而达到治疗鼻炎的目的,从理论上讲,它和传统针灸具有相同的效果。研究的方法用串通的针刺手法是＂捻转＂＂提插＂等,其实质就是产生一个生物电脉冲,并沿着经络向起所属脏腑器官传导,然后引起该器官植物神经发生反射,从而产生治疗作用,本治疗技术则是利用治疗仪直接在迎香穴上输入小电流脉冲信号刺激经穴。研究结果达到治疗和缓解鼻炎患者的痛苦。

Reliability of registrations: a feasibility study into registration of occupational and educational titles in hospitals

Some results of an investigation are presented in which answers on some basic variables (occupation and education) are registered in several ways. The variables were measured in a setting in which the registration was to occur as fast as possible. All registrations went by using a computer. The registrations were checked a few weeks afterwards. This gives information about the reliability of the registrations. About 70% of those having a job reported the same occupation during the registration and the check. For educational level the same answer was given in about 80% of the cases. People not in the labour process reported both times nearly identical. Typing the labels resembles most the way employees at registration desks work. Choosing, however, from a list gives more reliable results. Causes of differences in assignments are discussed, and recommendations for improvement are given.     

Images of poverty and attributions for poverty: does higher education moderate the linkage?

• ‘Development Education’ is a topical phrase describing campaigns to raise public awareness about global poverty, but how do such processes interact with more formal learning experiences, for example in Higher Education? One hundred and seventy-one final-semester Business versus Social Science University students experienced a conventionally ‘cropped’ (child's face only) versus ‘full’ (face-plus-context) campaign-like image of a child in poverty. They also completed the attribution-focused ‘Causes of Third-World Poverty Questionnaire’ (CTWPQ). Business students tended to disagree less than social science students with blaming-the-poor for poverty. More importantly, a cropped image condition resulted in significantly elevated blame-the-poor scores among business students, but not those in social science. Interactions like this suggest that campaign images can be psychologically tailored to differently educated market segments.
