Summary The values of a variablex are assumed known for all elements in a finite population. Between this variable and another variableY, whose values are registered in a sample survey, there is the usual linear regression relationship. This paper considers problems of design and of estimation of the regression coefficienta and the interceptb. The followingGodambe type theorem is proved: There exists no minimum variance unbiased linear estimator ofa andb. LetP be the proportion of units in a finite population possessing a sensitive attribute. We prove the admissibility of (i) an unbiased estimator of the variance of a general homogeneous linear unbiased estimator ofP and (ii) an unbiased estimator of the population varianceP(1−P), based on an arbitrary but fixed sampling design, under the randomized response plans due to Warner (1965) and Eriksson (1973). The Shewhart and the Bonferroni-adjustment R and S chart are usually applied to monitor the range and the standard deviation of a quality characteristic. These charts are used to recognize the process variability of a quality characteristic. The control limits of these charts are constructed on the assumption that the population follows approximately the normal distribution with the standard deviation parameter known or unknown. In this article, we establish two new charts based approximately on the normal distribution. The constant values needed to construct the new control limits are dependent on the sample group size (k) and the sample subgroup size (n). Additionally, the unknown standard deviation for the proposed approaches is estimated by a uniformly minimum variance unbiased estimator (UMVUE). This estimator has variance less than that of the estimator used in the Shewhart and Bonferroni approach. The proposed approaches in the case of the unknown standard deviation, give out-of-control average run length slightly less than the Shewhart approach and considerably less than the Bonferroni-adjustment approach.  相似文献

In this paper the Blackwell-Rao and Lehmann-Scheffé theorems are used to derive the minimum variance unbiased estimator ofP=Pr{Y when the independent random variablesX andY follow the two-parameter exponential distribution. Summary In this paper methods of estimation which may be considered as combination of ratio and product methods have been suggested. The mean square errors of these estimators utilizing two supplementary variables are compared with (i) simple unbiased estimator (p=0), (ii) usual ratio and product methods of estimation (p=1) and (iii) multivariate ratio and multivariate product estimators (p=2), wherep is the number of supplementary variables utilized. Conditions for their efficient use have been obtained for each case. Extension to general case ofp-variables has been briefly discussed. Suppose independent random samples are drawn from k (2) populations with a common location parameter and unequal scale parameters. We consider the problem of estimating simultaneously the hazard rates of these populations. The analogues of the maximum likelihood (ML), uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) and the best scale equivariant (BSE) estimators for the one population case are improved using Rao‐Blackwellization. The improved version of the BSE estimator is shown to be the best among these estimators. Finally, a class of estimators that dominates this improved estimator is obtained using the differential inequality approach.  相似文献

Summary Horvitz andThompson [1952] considered varying probability sampling method in general and furnished an unbiased estimator of the population total.Rao, Hartley andCochran [1962] proposed a simple procedure of unequal probability sampling with replacement. It leads to an estimator of the population total having smaller variance than is obtained by sampling with replacement. An attempt has been made in the present paper to compare efficiencies ofHorvitz-Thompson's estimator with that due toRao, hartley andCochran. It is demonstrated that the generalized ps sampling strategy consisting of the design with i , the probability of inclusion of thei-th population unit in the sample proportional to the modified size together withHorvitz-Thompson's estimator is superior toRao, Hartley andCochran's sampling strategy under a general super-population model.  相似文献

Summary The family of distributions of the random sampleX 1,...,X N not being specified solution of different statistical problems is obtained by methods based on ranks, because these methods are distribution-free under the assumption ofQ:=P(X i =X j )=0. Frequently, in case ofQ>0, the use of midranks is proposed, though only few is known about their distribution depending on the (usually unknown) distribution of the random sample. In this paper, an alternative sampling procedure that is a mixture of simple random sampling and systematic sampling is proposed. It results in uniform inclusion probabilities for all individual units and positive inclusion probabilities for all pairs of units. As a result, the proposed sampling procedure enables us to estimate the population mean unbiasedly using the ordinary sample mean, and to provide an unbiased estimator of its sampling variance. It is also found that the suggested sampling procedure performs well especially when the size of simple random sample is small. Received August 2001  相似文献

The goal of this paper is to investigate the repeated substitution method (seeSrivastava, 1967) estimating population variance in finite population sample surveys. We propose an almost unbiased multivariate ratio estimator that has a smaller mean squared error than the conventional biased multivariate ratio estimator (established byIsaki (1983)) and with the same precision as the multivariate regression estimator. Furthermore, it is a computationally much more interesting estimator since to compute it we only need to have knowledge of correlation among available variables, which it is common to have in several practical situations. A comparison of the multivariate ratio estimator proposed and the multivariate regression estimator is given.  相似文献

Summary Almost unbiased ratio and product type estimators have been obtained with the help of the Jack-Knifing technique for simple random sampling in two phases. The mean square errors of the resulting estimators have been compared with those of the corresponding usual (biased) estimators and it has been found that they are approximately same. A formula is presented for an unbiased estimator for the variance of an unbiased estimator of a survey population total as well as for an unbiased estimator of its variance based on sampling in two-stages following Rao et al. J Roy Stat Soc B 24: 482–491 (1962) scheme in both stages when the originally selected units in both stages cannot be fully covered in the survey but are to be randomly sub-sampled. We use these to compare powers of the Hajek test (Hajek 1967), the Sidak Vondracek test (1957) and the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test. We derive some order relations between the values of the probagility-functions under each model. Hence find that the tests based onS (1) andS (n) are the UMP rank tests for the alternative (a). Summary Some of the many methods developed for estimating parameters or percentage points of the Weibull distribution are compared. It is shown that the known estimation of the reciprocal shape parameter with the aid of a straight line in the extremal probability paper is rather biased for small sample sizes. To avoid the bias, correction factors are given, and the efficiency of the resulting unbiased estimator is calculated for sample sizesn=2, 3, …, 9. Results ofJ. Lieblein concerning the double exponential distribution are slightly modified in order to get best linear unbiased estimators for parameters and for the logarithms of percentage points of the Weibull distribution. Other methods are shortly discussed and a median-unbiased estimator for the shape parameter is derived.   相似文献

Summary Nearest neighbour methods traditionally used to estimate density of a sessile biological population treat individuals as points. The present paper suggests distance-based density estimators which treat individuals as circles with variable areas. Distribution of distance between a sample point and thek-th (k = 1, 2, 3, …) nearest circle is derived. Maximum likelihood estimator of density is obtained from a random sample of point tok-th order distances. Assuming a skewed distribution for the circle radius, moment estimators of density and mean circle area are derived.  相似文献
