The main goal of this research is to identify the direction and scale of connectedness of selected post-communist countries from Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and major global and European sovereign bond markets, covering the period 2008–2020, including the COVID-19 pandemic. We verify the volatility spillovers in bond markets via directional method and dynamic conditional interconnectedness modelling perspectives. Unexpectedly, we discovered that CEE countries are more interlinked with each other than with global markets. Therefore, our results suggest that it is useful to look separately at advanced and developing bond markets in European countries, as it has a significant implication for bond's portfolio management.  相似文献

Using 603 sovereign rating actions by the three leading global rating agencies between January 2020 and March 2021, this paper shows that the severity of sovereign ratings actions is not directly affected by the intensity of the COVID-19 health crisis (proxied by case and mortality rates) but through a mechanism of its negative economic repercussions such as the economic outlook of a country and governments' response to the health crisis. Contrary to expectations, credit rating agencies pursued mostly a business-as-usual approach and reviewed sovereign ratings when they were due for regulatory purposes rather than in response to the rapid developments of the pandemic. Despite their limited reaction to the ongoing pandemic, sovereign rating news from S&P and Moody's still conveyed price-relevant information to the bond markets.  相似文献

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic significantly negatively impacted the global economy and stock markets. This paper investigates the stock-market tail risks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and how the pandemic affects the risk correlations among the stock markets worldwide. The conditional autoregressive value at risk (CAViaR) model is used to measure the tail risks of 28 selected stock markets. Furthermore, risk correlation networks are constructed to describe the risk correlations among stock markets during different periods. Through dynamic analysis of the risk correlations, the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on stock markets worldwide is examined quantitatively. The results show the following: (i) The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant tail risks in stock markets in most countries, while the stock markets of a few countries have been unaffected by the pandemic. (ii) The topology of risk correlation networks has become denser during the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic makes it easier for risk to transfer among stock markets. (iii) The increase in the closeness of the risk relationship between countries with lower economic correlation has become much higher than that between counties with higher economic correlation during the COVID-19 pandemic. For researchers and policy-makers, these findings reveal practical implications of the risk correlations among stock markets.  相似文献

We analyzed the return and volatility spillover between the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the crude oil market, and the stock market by employing two empirical methods for connectedness: the time-domain approach developed by Diebold and Yilmaz (2012) and the method based on frequency dynamics developed by Barunik and Krehlik (2018). We find that the return spillover mainly occurs in the short term; however, the volatility spillover mainly occurs in the long term. From the moving window analysis results, the impact of COVID-19 created an unprecedented level of risk, such as plummeting oil prices and triggering the US stock market circuit breaker four times, which caused investors to suffer heavy losses in a short period. Furthermore, the impact of COVID-19 on the volatility of the oil and stock markets exceeds that caused by the 2008 global financial crisis, and continues to have an effect. The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on financial markets is uncertain in both the short and long terms. Our research provides some urgent and prominent insights to help investors and policymakers avoid the risks in the crude oil and stock markets because of the COVID-19 pandemic and reestablish economic development policy strategies.  相似文献

Against the backdrop of the exponentially growing trend in green finance investments and the calls for green recovery in the post-COVID world, this study presents the time-frequency connectedness between green and conventional financial markets by using the spillover models of Diebold and Yilmaz (2012) and Baruník and Křehlík (2018). Covering a sample period from January 01, 2008, to July 31, 2020, we aim to explore the dynamics of connectedness between conventional and green investments in fixed income, equity, and energy markets. Additionally, we determine the role of market-wide uncertainty in altering the connectedness structure by performing a subsample analysis for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic crisis period. Our results show that competing energy investments are not connected, and there is only one-way spillovers from the conventional bonds in the fixed-income investments. Additionally, we observe a low (high) intergroup connectedness for conventional (green) investments. Moreover, the frequency-based analysis shows that connectedness between these competing markets is more pronounced during the short-run. The subsample analysis for the pandemic crisis period shows similar results except for the disconnection between bond markets in the short-run frequency. Our time-varying analysis shows peaks and troughs in the connectedness between climate-friendly and conventional investments that suggest different global events such as the Eurozone Debt Crisis and Shale Oil Revolution drives the association between alternate investments. Similarly, we observe an enhanced connectedness during the recent COVID-19 period, suggesting that financial stability would be a significant factor in determining the smooth transition to green investments.  相似文献

This study compares the dynamic spillover effects of gold and Bitcoin prices on the oil and stock market during the COVID-19 pandemic via time-varying parameter vector autoregression. Both time-varying and time-point results indicate that gold is a safe haven for oil and stock markets during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, unlike gold, Bitcoin's response is the opposite, rejecting the safe haven property. Further analysis shows that the safe-haven effects of gold on the stock market become stronger when the pandemic critically spreads.  相似文献

This paper examines return and volatility connectedness between Bitcoin, traditional financial assets (Crude Oil, Gold, Stocks, Bonds, and the United States Dollar-USD), and major global uncertainty measures (the Economic Policy Uncertainty-EPU, the Twitter-based Economic Uncertainty-TEU, and the Volatility Index-VIX) from April 29, 2013, to June 30, 2020. To this end, the Time-Varying Parameter Vector Autoregression (TVP-VAR) model, dynamic connectedness approaches, and network analyses are used. The results indicate that total spillover indices reached unprecedented levels during COVID-19 and have remained high since then. The evidence also confirms the high return and volatility spillovers across markets during the COVID-19 era. Regarding the return spillovers, Gold is the centre of the system and demonstrates the safe heaven properties. Bitcoin is a net transmitter of volatility spillovers to other markets, particularly during the COVID-19 period. Furthermore, the causality-in-variance Lagrange Multiplier (LM) and the Fourier LM tests' results confirm a unidirectional volatility transmission from Bitcoin to Gold, Stocks, Bonds, the VIX and Crude Oil. Interestingly the EPU is the only global factor that causes higher volatility in Bitcoin. Several potential implications of the results are also discussed.  相似文献

In this paper, we analyze the determinants and effects of credit default swap (CDS) trading initiation in the sovereign bond market. CDS trading initiation is associated with a 30–150 basis point reduction in sovereign bond yields, with greater yield reductions accruing to higher default risk economies. For countries with high default risk, rated B or lower by Standard and Poor’s, CDS initiation is also associated with significant price efficiency benefits in the underlying market. CDS trading initiation is more likely following increases in local equity index volatility, index spreads for regional and global CDS markets, or depreciation of the local currency relative to the US dollar, and decreases in a country’s ability to service foreign debt. Our results are robust to selection bias controls based on these factors.  相似文献

This paper investigates the quantile connectedness between uncertainties and green bonds in the US, Europe, and China by using a quantile VAR model-based connectedness approach. The empirical findings suggest that the spillover effect under extreme market conditions is significantly higher than that under normal market conditions. We also show that stock market uncertainty (VIX) and oil market uncertainty (OVX) have a greater impact on green bonds, especially in extreme upward markets. In addition, the US is the dominant transmitter of spillovers in other green bond markets, while China is always the net receiver of spillovers. Further research, meanwhile, demonstrates that the connectedness between green bonds and uncertainties is time-varying and that the spillover effects at extreme upper and lower quantiles are asymmetric and heterogeneous, especially in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. These findings provide investors and policymakers with systematic insights into the risk resistance of different green bond markets.  相似文献

COVID-19 is the first global scale crisis since the inception of Bitcoin. We compare the contagion phenomenon of Bitcoin and other financial markets or assets pre and during the COVID-19 shock in both contemporaneous and non-contemporaneous manner. This paper uses the directed acyclic graph (DAG), spillover index, and network topology to provide strong evidence on the directional contagion outcomes of Bitcoin and other assets. The empirical results show that the contagion effect between Bitcoin and developed markets is strengthened during the COVID-19 crisis. Particularly, European market has a dominant role. Excluding Bitcoin’s own shocks, United State and European markets are the main contagion sources to Bitcoin. European market also works as a intermediary to deliver infectious from United State and market fear. The findings show that gold always has contagion effect with Bitcoin, while gold, US dollar and bond market are the contagion receivers of Bitcoin under the shock of COVID-19. The empirical results further proved the safe haven, hedge and diversifier potential of Bitcoin in economic stable time, but also shows that the sustainability of these properties is undermined during the market turmoil.  相似文献

We provide the first empirical study on the role of panic and stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic, including six uncertainties and the four most traded cryptocurrencies, on three green bond market volatilities. Based on daily data covering the period from January 1, 2020 to January 31, 2022, we combine Diebold and Yilmaz's (2012, 2014) time domain spillover approach and Ando et al.'s (2022) quantile regression framework to investigate the time-frequency spillover connectedness among markets and measure the direction and intensity of the net transmission effect under extreme negative and positive event conditions, and normal states. We further provide novel insights into the green finance literature by examining sensitivity to quantile analysis of the net transfer mechanism between green bonds, cryptocurrencies, and pandemic uncertainty. Regarding the network connectedness analysis, the results reveal strong net information spillover transmission among markets under the bearish market. In extremely negative event circumstances, the MSCI Euro green bond acts as the leading net shock receiver in the system, whereas COVID-19 fake news appears as the largest net shock contributor, followed by BTC. According to sensitivity to quantile analysis, the net dynamic shock transfer mechanism is time-varying and quantile-dependent. Overall, our work uncovers crucial implications for investors and policymakers.  相似文献

I analyze the shockwave effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on currency markets, with a comparison to the global financial crisis (GFC), employing Kapetanios m-break unit root test, investigations of standalone risk measures—downside variance, upside risk, volatility skewness, Gaussian Value at Risk (VaR), historical VaR, modified VaR—and Diebold–Yilmaz volatility spillover analysis. Standalone risk analysis shows that the turmoil in the initial months of COVID-19 was not as severe as that in the GFC. However, examination of co-movements and volatility spillovers illustrates a different scenario. According to the results of the static connectedness measure of Diebold–Yilmaz, the shockwave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the total volatility spillover is about eight times greater than that of the GFC. Among standalone risk measures, the results closest to this finding are obtained from volatility skewness analysis. Additionally, of six foreign exchange rates, the Brazilian real and Turkish lira are the currencies experiencing the greatest increase in received volatility during the GFC and the COVID-19 pandemic, respectively. These findings suggest the severe effect of crises on emerging financial markets.  相似文献

This paper assesses the effect of fiscal rules on sovereign bond spreads over the short and medium term, for 34 advanced countries and 19 emerging market economies, over the period 1980–2016. Our results, based on impulse response functions, show that the dynamic impact of fiscal rules on sovereign yield spreads is negative and statistically significant, at around 1.2–1.8 percentage points, implying lower government borrowing costs. This result stems essentially from the advanced economies subsample. We also find that more fiscally responsible countries are the ones for which a fiscal rule reduces the government's borrowing costs. Moreover, in times of recession, a fiscal rule leads financial markets to reduce the risk premiums on government bonds. Finally, when it comes to design features of fiscal rules, independent monitoring of compliance to the rule, done outside government, also reduces sovereign spreads.  相似文献

This study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war on the connectedness of lower-order moments (returns and volatility) and higher-order moments (skewness and kurtosis) in the markets of green bonds, clean energy, wind, solar, and sustainability indexes. To compare the spillover effects of these moments, we use the Diebold and Yilmaz and Barunik and Krehlik methods. Our findings show that the total spillover effect of lower-order moments is higher than that of higher-order moments in the time domain. In the frequency domain, the total return and skewness spillover are primarily concentrated in the short term, whereas the total volatility spillover is mainly concentrated in the long term. Furthermore, we observe that the spillover effect of the Russia-Ukraine war on the green finance market is mild, while the COVID-19 pandemic has a significant and unprecedented influence on the spillover of both lower- and higher-order moments in this market. Additionally, we note that before the COVID-19 outbreak, the total kurtosis spillover was irregular, but it became concentrated in the long term after the outbreak. Moreover, the continuation of COVID-19 has had an unprecedented and long-lasting impact on the kurtosis and skewness of the green bond market.  相似文献

This paper investigates the direct and spillover portfolio effects from the global outbreak of COVID-19. We find that an increase of the newly added cases of one specific country causes investors to significantly decrease their portfolio allocations in the outbreak countries (direct effect). Simultaneously, investors also decrease their allocations to other countries (spillover effect). In addition, we provide evidence and documentation that the transmission mechanism underlying foreign exposures matter to the above-mentioned portfolio effect. Moreover, we provide evidence for phase heterogeneity. The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic has significant direct and spillover portfolio effects, but the impacts are weakened in second wave of the pandemic. The capital reallocation effect occurs only when the disease becomes global. Finally, our heterogeneities analysis shows that both local and spillover effects are mitigated when the economies are more developed and democratic and when the country has better health care facilities.  相似文献

The COVID-19 pandemic has exerted a noteworthy impact on stock market volatility around the world. Can vaccination programs revert these adverse effects? To answer this question, we scrutinize daily data from 66 countries from January 1, 2020 to April 30, 2021. We provide convincing evidence that COVID-19 vaccination assists in stabilizing the global equity markets. The drop in volatility is robust to many considerations and does not result solely from either the pandemic itself or the government policy responses—the negative correlation remains significant after controlling for these factors. The impact of vaccinations is relatively stronger within developed markets than in emerging ones.  相似文献

This study uses proprietary data on daily net non-resident portfolio flows to emerging markets to analyse the interconnectedness of non-resident debt and equity portfolio flows under different market conditions. We find that there is less interconnectedness during normal times but increased interconnectedness during periods of uncertainty and stress, suggesting an asymmetry in the spillovers of these portfolio flows. Importantly, we find that shocks in the broad EM US dollar exchange rate are a net transmitter of shocks to debt and equity portfolio flows of EM economies. Our analysis, based on the net directional spillover index, shows that this effect is most pronounced during the COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, using a frequency domain approach to connectedness, we find that the broad EM US dollar exchange rate is a net transmitter of shocks to the EM economies’ debt and equity flows, with the impact hitting portfolio capital flows within at least a week to 100 days. Our results suggest that pre-emptive macroprudential policy measures and better risk monitoring can improve the resilience of borrowers and investors in EM economies during times of global shocks, particularly during US dollar appreciations when portfolio flows tend to reverse.  相似文献

We study if government response to the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic can mitigate investor herding behaviour in international stock markets. Our empirical analysis is informed by daily stock market data from 72 countries from both developed and emerging economies in the first quarter of 2020. The government response to the COVID-19 outbreak is measured by means of the Oxford COVID-19 Government Response Tracker, where higher scores are associated with greater stringency. Three main findings are in order. First, results show evidence of investor herding in international stock markets. Second, we document that the Oxford Government Response Stringency Index mitigates investor herding behaviour, by way of reducing multidimensional uncertainty. Third, short-selling restrictions, temporarily imposed by the national and supranational regulatory authorities of the European Union, appear to exert a mitigating effect on herding. Finally, our results are robust to a range of model specifications.  相似文献
