The Urban,Politics and Subject Formation

In contrast to more traditional debates about voting patterns, local versus state administrations, and individual rights and participatory democracy, this article addresses the question of urban politics through an analysis of subject formation. By taking subject formation as the analytical focus, research questions about ‘politics’ shift from traditional ones about local or state government and the development of consensus, for instance, to ones about the constitution of subjects who are governed and govern themselves in particular ways. Using the emergence of two increasingly commonplace subject forms in contemporary China — urban professionals and volunteers — as examples, the article considers how modes of self‐regulation become political problems and also how subjects may be of the urban as well as located in the urban. The problematizations of socialist state planning have led to new governmental rationalities and technologies that not only produced new subject positions, but also new urban spaces, landscapes, economies and lifestyles. From this view, the article is an intervention into discussions about the ‘where’ of urban politics. It also argues that it is critical to examine politics as problematization and normalization if we are to understand what is at stake in the constitution of potential ‘communities of action’.

工业增长与企业盈利水平的因果关系分析

追求高利润是企业扩大生产、增加投资的根本动机,同时又有利于经济增长。研究表明,利润的较快增长会推升工业投资与工业本身的增长。反过来,工业增长虽不必然导致企业盈利的增加,但实际上利润的增长也需要以一定的工业增速为前提。当前中国经济增长进入中高速时期,保持一定的利润水平是实现转方式调结构的基本要求。因此,要大力发展混合所有制经济,提升技术创新能力和管理水平,增强企业发展的"软实力",成功实现增速"换挡期"的盈利模式升级。     

会计利润的不确定性思考

文章试图解释企业在确认、计量会计利润时存在的一个佯谬(paradox):从短期而言,会计利润是一个充满估计和选择的不确定性结果,但从长期而言,它又是公允的,相对确定的。文章首先对不确定性进行了阐释,接着重点分析了会计利润与不确定性之间的关系,最后得出结论:截取某个区间企业会计利润确实是一些不确定的事件,但从长期来看企业利润又是相对确定的。     

Private Politics, Corporate Social Responsibility, and Integrated Strategy

This paper provides a theory of private politics in which an activist seeks to change the production practices of a firm for the purpose of redistribution to those whose interests it supports. The source of the activist's influence is the possibility of support for its cause by the public. The paper also addresses the issue of corporate social responsibility by distinguishing among corporate redistribution as motivated by profit maximization, altruism, and threats by the activist. Private politics and corporate social responsibility not only have a direct effect on the costs of the firm, but also have a strategic effect by altering the competitive positions affirms in an industry. From an integrated-strategy perspective the paper investigates the strategic implications of private politics and corporate social responsibility for the strategies of rival firms when one or both are targets of an activist campaign. Implications for empirical analysis are derived from the theory.

Politics,Economic Provisioning,and Suffrage in St. Louis: What Women Said,What Men Heard

One of the enduring questions in history is why any group would choose to share power with another group. The granting of suffrage to American women in 1919 is one of those events in which we seek answers. I focus here on the diversity of women's economic provisioning functions, arguing that, because of that diversity, the granting of suffrage had more political benefits to the men in power and less political risks. The social provisioning status‐quo, which had been threatened by the feminist voices of the 19^th century, must have seemed to be back under the control of the men in power. In order to consider economic provisioning and politics more specifically, I study the economic profile of women and the political cost/benefit thinking of male legislators in St. Louis, Missouri.
