China's Ship Industry Entering World Market

China's ship building industry has a long history of development. Since the founding of new China, with four decades of construction, especially a decade of reform and opening, its shipbuilding industry has entered a rapid development period. Due to the downturn in global economy, the economic growth rate in China sharply decreased in the first quarter of 2009. However, the fluctuating macro economy won't change the uptrend in food and beverage industry. The ratio between added-values of food industry and agriculture industry in China is 0.22 at present, but the ratio in developed western countries averages 1.2, meaning that there is still great potential and room in Chinese food industry. During the "11th five-year" period, the beverage industry is expected to grow at a rate of 15% or above. In this way, the production in this industry in 2010 will reach 68 million tons.

China Ship News President Li Zhong and his party including editors of CSN and Ship Economic ＆ Trade conducted a one- week visit to the shipbuilding industry management departments and backbone shipbuilders in Yangzhou, Taizhou and Nantong of Jiangsu province in mid-October. The visited included： three shipbuilding industry management departments and 21 backbone shipyards and marine equipment manufacturers in Northern Jiangsu. By ownership, there were five central enterprises and their joint ventures and 16 private joint stock enterprises （including four listed companies）. By product category, there were 19 shipyards and two marine equipment manufacturers.     

Wenzhou Shoes

The shoe-making industry in Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province has a long history. With thousands of factories making shoes, the industry has an annual production capacity of more than 100 million pairs which are marketed at home and abroad. Hence the name of "city of shoes" in China.

Qin and Han Dynasties were important periods for the development of maritime trade and ocean navigation. In 1975, during the excavation of the site of shipbuilding workshop in Qin Dynasty, three juxtaposed shipways and one wood processing workshop were found. Of the shipway, the slides way were made up of parallel slides, with a width of 1.8 to 2.8 meters, a length of over 100 meters. Some crossties were put under the shipway while some wood frusta above. Some other relics were also unearthed, such as some iron tools (chisel), Han Ban Liang coins, bronze arrowhead, etc.. According to recordation, during the pacification of Ling-nan area by Emperor Qin, a lot of ships were built up by Qin army in Panyu (Guangzhou) to fight against Ou Yue. From the site of the workshop, it can be judged that its scale was quite big and it could produce wood ships with a width of 8 meters, a length of 30 meters, and a carrying capacity of 50 to 60 tons. From tombs of East Han, some ship moulds of cargo boat, ferry and regular boat were also unearthed. It reflected that two thousand years ago shipbuilding industry had reached a high standard.

Chinese steel mills turn to more imported iron ore

China＇s steel industry overestimated the country＇s demand for iron ore and as a result imported a record high amount of the material in March. A surge of domestic steel output and price increases in the beginning of 2009 raised market expectations. Many domestic steel mills and traders increased orders for iron ore in February and March as they anticipated demand would continue growing, said Liang Shuhe, deputy-director with the Foreign Trade Department of the Ministry of Commerce （MOC）, at an industry conference in the port city of Tianjin on April 13.
