在转换成本和网络效应存在下互联网产业通过产品创新活动争夺市场份额。某些“创新”的主要目的为排除竞争。互联网产业一个典型的发展过程是:企业依靠外部融资支撑的策略性创新,降低消费者向其产品转换的成本,争夺市场份额,并在投资约束的限制下走向合并,最终抬高了市场集中度。特别的,转换成本的存在让企业有动力通过事前控制转换成本的创新,争夺事后的市场势力,并且“收割”事后锁定的用户。  相似文献

运用DEA模型从市场结构和市场绩效两方面对我国商业银行进行检验分析,显示我国银行业的集中度、市场份额与绩效呈负相关关系,原因主要在于我国银行业市场结构较高的集中度不是市场自发作用的结果,大的银行规模并不意味着更高的利润回报。我国银行集中度和绩效之间不存在结构理论中所假设的因果关系,银行业市场结构对绩效的促进作用不明显。建立和完善我国银行业绩效考核体系时着重强调的应该是效率,而非银行规模和市场份额。  相似文献

Some debt markets have a “competitive advantage” over others due to easier regulatory requirements. Our model explains changes in the market shares of different debt markets. In particular, borrowers may choose between highly regulated and relatively unregulated placement of debt so as to minimize borrowing costs. Borrowers in the highly regulated market incur higher regulatory cost, but are also able to signal accurately their true risk class. In unregulated markets there is an asymmetric information problem. This results in an equilibrium where the debt market is segmented between less regulated and other, more strictly regulated, placements. Raising regulatory costs will lead to an expansion of the market share of unregulated debt. It will also lead to an increase in the overall default rate on corporate debt.  相似文献

The third Marshall–Hicks–Allen rule of elasticity of derived demand purports to show that labor demand is less elastic when labor is a smaller share of total costs. As Hicks, Allen, and then Bronfenbrenner showed, this rule is not quite correct, and actually is complicated by an unexpected negative relationship involving labor's share of total costs and the elasticity of substitution. The standard intuitive explanation for the exception to the rule presented by Stigler and referenced in many textbooks describes a situation rather different than the one described in the rule. The author presents an example that illustrates the peculiar negative impact of labor's share operating via the elasticity of substitution and then explains why the unexpected relationship between labor's share of total cost, the elasticity of substitution, and the elasticity of labor demand holds.  相似文献

While previous studies of industry concentration have traditionally utilized sales or market share data, no studies that we are aware of have been done with market capitalization data. If the markets are successful at valuing a firm's current and future prospects, it can be argued that concentration indices and other metrics based on the market value of the firms in an industry should be a good proxy for market power within an industry. This study presents a study of the market concentration using the Herfindahl and entropy concentration indices for 13 industries.  相似文献

This paper reports industry concentration measures for the South African manufacturing sector over the 1972–1996 period for the three digit industry classification. Noted are high level of industry concentration in South African manufacturing, and a rising trend in concentration across a wide range of industries as measured by the Gini coefficient, though some countervailing evidence emerges on the Rosenbluth index. Analytically the paper examines the impact of concentration on employment and investment rates. Results show that increased concentration unambiguously lowers employment. For investment rates, increased inequality of market share serves to raise investment rates, while falling firm numbers for any given inequality of market share lowers investment rates. The difference is consistent with a disciplining effect of a competitive fringe of firms on the behaviour of large firms in a market.  相似文献

This study examines the bicycle component industry. This industry is characterized by one dominant firm, Shimano Inc., and four or five smaller players. Firms in the component industry produce components for sale in two related markets, the market for original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and the component aftermarket. A unique data set containing information on aftermarket prices and OEM market shares is used to determine whether or not market power in the aftermarket is a function of OEM market power. The results indicate that concentration in the OEM market is positively related to aftermarket price, while an individual firm's OEM market share is inversely related to aftermarket price.  相似文献

This article presents a price floor model in which durability, unit costs and production period are factors in explaining price rigidity. This article elaborates that cost structure plays an essential role in resolving the inconclusive relationship between market concentration and price rigidity. When the industry is characterized by decreasing returns of scale, the degree of price flexibility decreases as market competition intensifies. The reverse is true when the industry exhibits increasing returns of scale. The factors that cause price rigidity also foster price adjustment asymmetry and price adjustment lag. During times of recession, the model exhibits upward price flexibility as costs increase, but downward price rigidity as costs decrease. Even under forward-looking expectations, the way in which firms adjust prices could look as though they have adaptive expectations. If price stickiness is a characteristic of market competition, then public policies determined by price level could be too drastic for firms in competitive markets.  相似文献

This paper models entry and the subsequent changes in market structure in three segments of the UK car industry, 1958–83. The entry equation emerges from a dynamic optimization model which allows for the costs of acquiring market share. The model is used to explore the hypothesis that the market penetration of entrants in this industry was facilitated by a post-entry advertising war which the incumbent firms lost. The basic hypothesis under examination is that advertising both facilitates and restricts entry, but that it does so in a way that varies systematically over time. The data are consistent with this view, showing that high advertising shares readily translate into high market shares, but that the escalation of industry advertising caused by entry can make high advertising entry strategies increasingly costly over time.  相似文献

This paper examines the causes of market concentration in advertising-supported online markets such as sports, news, and email. In particular, it is the first paper to explore the relationship between concentration and product differentiation, economies of scale, market size, advertising, content costs, and multi-market ownership in online markets. As expected, differentiated large markets with low content costs and little multi-market ownership are less concentrated. Furthermore, I show that advertising-supported online markets have much in common with the magazine industry.  相似文献

The development of an industry is seen as the outcome of a differential game in which market shares flow in response to price differences. It is hypothesized that while all consumers eventually react to price differences, some are slower than others. If scale advantages have some influence on marginal costs around average market share, then, under reasonable conditions, only skewed size distributions can be locally stable steady states. In addition, and contrary to common belief, the largest firm need not eventually monopolize the industry.  相似文献

文章用回归估计的方法计算了国内手机行业22个品牌的价格弹性,并对价格弹性与市场份额的关系进行了实证研究.实证结果显示,市场份额越大,价格弹性越朝负的方向变动,这与国外实证研究的结果相反,反映了转型过程中中国手机市场的特征.同时,与以往很多研究所采用的线性回归方程不同,价格弹性与市场份额之间的关系是非线性的,回归方程为逆函数.价格弹性与市场份额环比发展速度之间也存在着显著的关系,回归方程为二次函数.  相似文献

This article develops a new extension of the constant-market-shares model, attributing the gains or losses of market share of an exporter in a specific market to its competitors. The method is then applied to Brazil's exports of manufactured products to the US market, determining from which countries and by how much Brazil gained market share, and to which countries Brazil lost market share in the period between 1992, 1999 and 2004. The bilateral gains and losses of Brazil to OECD countries are shown to be related to changes in the relative unit labour costs of these countries through a two-period panel data analysis.  相似文献

Abstract. This paper considers a simple model of geographical concentration of new high‐technology industries that lack stable design standards. In the model, agglomerative effects result from positive feedback between competitive forces in the upstream and downstream segments of a high‐technology industry, rather than as a result of traditional scale economies in the manufacturing of standardized products. The model assumes that firms in the upstream service supply industry have ex ante uncertain costs and compete in Bertrand fashion for the independent demands of downstream firms. This framework explains the mechanism of spatial clustering in industries with a high rate of innovation.  相似文献

本文利用 1 995年全国工业企业普查数据检验了中国转轨经济中产权结构和市场结构对于产业绩效的影响作用 ,发现国有产权结构变量对于产业绩效具有明显的负效应 ,产业集中率和规模变量则具有正效应。绩效的优劣主要是根据这几种因素的力度大小和相互抵消的结果来决定的。研究发现 ,国有企业通常是与垄断、缺乏竞争的市场结构密切相关 ,而可竞争的市场结构是与非国有产权或民营产权结构密切相关的。竞争市场与较低的国有产权结构的结合产生了良好的绩效 ,而竞争市场与较高的国有产权结构的不相容性则产生了不良的绩效结果。高度的国有产权结构和垄断性市场的结合 ,则会具有国有结构的负效应和某种较高垄断利润的综合效果。  相似文献

This paper examines the impact of stock market fluctuations on money demand in Italy from a long‐run perspective. The money demand function estimated by Muscatelli and Spinelli (2000) for a long time span is utilized as a benchmark, adding to the specification information on share prices from the Milan Stock Exchange Reform of 1913 to recent years. For a shorter time period (1938–2003), annual observations on stock market capitalization and turnover velocity are also considered. The empirical findings suggest that stock market fluctuations help to explain temporary movements in liquidity preference, rather than its secular patterns. Overall, a positive association emerges between an index of stock market prices that includes dividends and real money balances; however, the estimated long‐run relationship is unstable. In a dynamic, short‐term specification of money demand, the estimated coefficient of deflated stock prices is positive, and therefore compatible with a wealth effect, in the years 1913–1980, while in the last two decades a substitution effect has prevailed and the correlation between money and share prices has been negative. This is likely to reflect a change in financial structure and the increasing role of opportunity costs defined over a wider range of assets. These results are confirmed by data on stock market capitalization. Moreover, in the recent period, stock market turnover and money growth are positively correlated .  相似文献

We offer a theory of spinoffs that explains some salient aspects of these important market entrants. In infant industries, a great share of new market opportunities is depleted by firms that spinoff from incumbents. A model emphasizing the relation between incumbents’ evolving corporate cultures and the generation of spinoffs explains this regularity in industry evolution. By doing so, we capture different patterns in firm development that finally will help explain the evolutionary paths that industries may follow. We show that organizations reach a critical size that entails the collapse of a cooperative culture and triggers the exodus of personnel founding own firms. Thereby, organizations with a cooperative culture active in a dynamic business environment provide ideal training grounds for potential founders. Moreover, we argue that cooperative firm cultures and processes of “entrepreneurial imprinting” are important sources of spinoffs’ superior capabilities concerning their later market performance. We relate our findings to empirical evidence on developmental patterns in industries, such as genealogies and performance of spinoffs.  相似文献

Agglomeration economies in manufacturing industries: the case of Spain   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
This study analyses the extent of geographical concentration of Spanish industry between 1993 and 1999, and studies the agglomeration economies that could underlie that concentration. The results confirm that there is major geographic concentration in a number of industries with widely varying characteristics, including high-tech businesses and those linked to the provision of natural resources as well as traditional industries. The analysis of the scope of spillovers behind this agglomeration supports the idea that transportation costs may induce plants in some industries to locate near their customers and suppliers. However, one cannot conclude that this is a common fact for all industries. This study also shows that the higher the technological level of an industry, the higher the agglomeration it experiences. This result implies the importance of the labour market, informational spillovers and producer services location for the agglomeration of these industries.  相似文献

This paper examines the determination of UK manufacturing industry profit margins using a panel of data from 1980 to 1991. In particular, we test whether industry concentration is important in shaping margins. Our results indicate that for both pooled cross-section data and for fixed effects models there is a robust positive correlation between industry margins and market concentration. However, the formulation of the margin matters for establishing this association. For those margins where a net revenue measure is used in the denominator of the margin then we are able to isolate the predicted relationship. However, for those margins that use gross revenue in the denominator the matter is more complex. Without controlling for a measure of material costs in the estimating equations then a simple concentration effect cannot be isolated.  相似文献

通过对我国劳动收入比重变动的原因研究发现:劳动力市场行政垄断行业分割与劳动收入比重之间互为因果。我国劳动力市场行政垄断行业分割会使行政垄断行业就业人数占总就业人数比例下降,行政垄断行业和竞争行业间收入差距扩大,导致劳动收入比重下降,进而会使资本实际价格下降,增强行政垄断企业的市场力量,加剧劳动力市场行政垄断行业分割程度。因此,减弱劳动力市场行政垄断行业分割是稳定劳动收入比重的关键。  相似文献
