This short note introduces the Industrial Marketing Management special issue entitled “Innovative strategic relationships among sustainable start-ups”. After reviewing the key concepts and recent studies on the interrelationships between sustainability, innovation, and entrepreneurship, the seven papers that make up the special issue are placed within a macro-meso-micro framework to analyze how innovation can contribute to the transition toward sustainability. The methodological approaches and results of these seven studies are briefly summarized and their main implications highlighted. To conclude, paths for future research are suggested. These paths provide opportunities to advance the analysis of how sustainable start-ups at the micro level can bring about systemic changes at the meso and macro levels through the management of innovative strategic relationships.  相似文献

This Special Issue of Industrial Marketing Management brings together a range of articles by authors who have undertaken the difficult task of researching time and process in business networks. Understanding interaction processes within a business relationship and network perspective requires the elaboration of time, the central construct by which humans grasp and comprehend change. As an introduction to the articles we present the concept of human time and delineate accordingly three methodological approaches available for the study of network processes. We also introduce the authors' contributions to the special issue that broadly divide into two groups: those that deal with methodological issues concerning the study of processes in business networks and those that consider the role of time and timing for studying business processes.  相似文献

Despite social media's increasing use in industrial markets to foster business outcomes, empirical evidence on its use among firms collaborating for innovation is equivocal. Using data from 1769 Australian start-ups, we examine how and under what conditions social media influences innovation outcomes. Our results demonstrate that social media has a significant positive impact on start-ups' innovation outcomes. We also find that managerial learning from start-up networks mediate the relationship between social media and innovation. In addition, market and technological dynamism moderate positively the effect of social media on innovation, such that the effect is stronger when environments are dynamic. While market dynamism also moderates the indirect effect of social media on innovation via managerial learning from start-up networks, in technologically stable environments managerial learning from network actors mediate the social media-innovation relationship. The study contributes to innovation network research by providing large scale quantitative evidence, delineating the process by which entrepreneurs use social media and managerial learning from network actors to innovate, and the contingent role of environmental dynamism. In doing so, we present a moderated mediation analysis leading to a more fine-grained understanding of how and under what conditions social media influences innovation outcomes in start-ups.  相似文献

The objective of the present study is to examine the strategizing of start-ups in a network context. The paper depicts start-up strategizing as an intertwined activity of identification and boundary-drawing. The questions of network identity and network boundaries become salient in times of disengagement by a primary customer or when there is a need for significant redirection of the business during what is referred to as a network identity crisis. The study emphasizes the viewpoint of an entrepreneur as strategist and builds on the concept of network identity to stress the socially structured individual cognition of who the organization is in light of its network connections. We study strategizing in four start-ups with different identity crises. By applying a grounded theory approach and Gioia methodology, the paper models the dynamics of restart strategizing in terms of its internal and external triggers and the choices when managing three identity-related contradictions. Furthermore, we characterize four alternative restart strategies connected to the identities and boundaries perceived by the entrepreneurs. By embracing the way start-up's identity and its strategy evolve interdependently in relation to the network dynamics, the model contributes to our understanding of those strategizing activities whereby restart can occur.  相似文献

Customer value propositions have experienced a growing interest among marketing scholars and managers in recent years. Despite its frequent mention in the business and academic press, the value proposition concept remains poorly understood and executed. This article introduces the reader to the special issue of Industrial Marketing Management on understanding and managing customer value propositions. The special issue combines five original research articles with four commentaries by though‑leading scholars and practitioners that together shed light on the origins and current use of the value proposition concept and also identify future research directions for improving our conceptual understanding and practical use of this pivotal concept in business markets.  相似文献

The phenomenon of the international Industrial Marketing and Purchasing Group (IMP Group) is, that despite the fact that it is informal in character, it has been possible to build close and lasting relationships between many researchers from all continents who have been developing their research over the last 40 years.The research carried out in the beginning by the IMP Group was very phenomenon-driven in character. Researchers associated with the IMP Group were linked because they viewed companies as being a network of interdependent entities and this view was commonly described in literature as the IMP network approach. Change is a fundamental assumption embedded in the network approach. Changes occurring in networks are caused by interdependency, interactions and mutual adaptation. The issue of change and transformation is important not only due to the aforementioned nature of the IMP network approach, but also due to the need to take into consideration new phenomena appearing and/or gaining strength in the context of company networks, technological changes facilitating the development of direct relationships on the business to consumer market, the change in the behaviour of a range of market leaders, based upon vertical integration, a change in the position of entities, which to-date have been peripheral within the network (e.g. subcontractors), the development of technology and global communication networks influencing a firm's ties within the internationalisation process, ever-growing competition drives the need to look for the actual impact of the overall relationships of a company on its economic performance. Referring to these issues this article serves to announce the 32nd Annual IMP Conference that will be held in Poznań, Poland, this year where discussion will focus on change and transformation of networks and relationships.  相似文献

We examine to what extent market conditions facilitating start-up formation affect firms' R&D investment and profits. We consider a model in which R&D efforts of an incumbent firm generate partly tacit technological know-how embodied in a key R&D employee, who might use it to form a start-up. The availability of complementary assets influences whether new firms are created and determine expected profits for start-up's founders. A large availability of complementary assets has the direct effect that the generation of start-ups is fostered. However, as a strategic effect, the incentives of incumbents to invest in R&D may be reduced because of the increased danger of knowledge loss occurring through start-up formation. We characterize the effects of an increase in the availability of complementary assets, showing that counter-intuitively there are cases in which it induces an increase in incumbents' R&D investment.  相似文献

Taking the network approach developed in the Nordic countries as a point of departure (cf. [Håkansson, H. and Snehota, I. (1989). No business is an island. The network concept of business strategy, Scandinavian Journal of Management 5 (3) 187-200.; Turnbull, P., Ford, D., and Cunningham, M. (1996). Interaction relationships and networks in business markets. An evolving perspective, Journal of Business Marketing 11 (3/4) 44-62]) this paper seeks to explore how firms and networks are affected by high involvement by governmental authorities. A special focus is given to the regulating instrument of licenses. In two case studies of protected industries, the pharmacy and insurance industry, we find that licenses are restrictions but also facilitators for relationships and networks. Licenses render firms a certain degree of acceptance, define roles and positions in the network, and affects efficiency. Thus, although licenses can be seen as a restriction for firms it also becomes evident that they facilitate firms' activities related to operating and/or entering new markets.  相似文献

As technology continues to advance and new products emerge, the interactions between buyers and suppliers have changed. The management of buyer–supplier relationships has increasingly become more dependent on new technologies, such as Partner Relationship Management (PRM) systems and computer-mediated communications (CMC). Furthermore, when new technologies emerge, suppliers are expected to educate their buyers about the benefits of the technology, train them on how to use it, and aid with the integration of the technology into pre-existing work processes. Given these issues, this special issue of Industrial Marketing Management explores the changing nature of buyer–supplier relationships in the Digital Era. This article presents a snapshot of the changes in buyer–supplier relationships brought on by new technology, provides an overview of the selected articles in this special issue, and offers a few directions for future research.  相似文献

In today's dynamic, complex and interconnected environments, interfirm networks in its various forms (e.g. franchising, retail and service chains, cooperatives, financial networks, joint ventures, strategic alliances, clusters, public-private partnerships, digital platforms) are becoming increasingly important in helping firms improve their competitive position through an enhanced access to innovation, complementary resources and capabilities otherwise not available to them. Driven by increased performance pressures in unpredictable environments, firms embedded in networks are increasingly moving from cooperators to collaborators as value co-creators. The aim of this introductory article is to discuss the role of innovation in business networks by focusing on two major topics: Network innovation versus innovation through networks. In addition, we provide an overview of the articles included in the special issue on Networks and Innovation focusing on the questions: (1) what is the impact of network characteristics on a firm's innovation?; and (2) what are the determinants of innovation in interfirm networks?  相似文献

Woodside [Woodside, A. G. (2004). Firm orientations, innovativeness and business performance: Advancing a systems dynamics view following a comment on Hult, Hurley, and Knight's 2004 study. Industrial Marketing Management, in press.] has crafted a thoughtful paper that makes a number of contributions and raises several important issues regarding firm orientations, innovation constructs, and business performance. In this paper, we attempt to address the issues brought up by his close evaluation of our recent IMM paper [Hult, G. T. M., Hurley, R. F., & Knight, G. A. (2004). Innovativeness: Its antecedents and impact on business performance. Industrial Marketing Management, 33(5), 429-438.] in comparison with our thoughts in an earlier paper in the Journal of Marketing [Hurley, R. F., & Hult, G. T. M. (1998). Innovation, market orientation, and organizational learning: An integration and empirical examination. Journal of Marketing, 62(July), 42-54.].  相似文献

This paper provides an appreciation of two highly cited, ‘classic’ Industrial Marketing Management articles pertaining to outsourcing integration and third party logistics services. The appreciation includes revisiting the general topic themes emanating from both articles, third-party logistics (3PL) service providers, outsourcing and core competence for competitive advantage, relationships, integrating supply chain actors, and combining products and services as a value proposition, with an objective to cast each article's influence on, and ongoing and future contributions to, present day research.  相似文献

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the connection between network evolution and technology embedding. To this end, we performed an exploratory case study of the network surrounding an eco-sustainable technology, Leaf House, Italy's first zero-carbon emission house. We apply theories on technological development within industrial networks, with a specific focus on their resource layer and on the three settings involved in embedding an innovation: “developing”, “producing”, and “using”. Our results contribute to these theories by developing four propositions on the connections between network evolution and embedding: first, technology embedding entails both downstream network expansion and upstream restrictions. Secondly, conflicts among actors increase as technology embedding approaches the producing and using settings. Third and fourth, the more the shapes a technology can assume, and the more each of these shapes involves actors acting in different settings, the easier it is to embed it. The paper concludes with managerial implications and suggestions for further research.  相似文献

The notions that firms are embedded within complex networks, and that managers spend time actively networking, have long been accepted by scholars within the Industrial Marketing and Purchasing (IMP) Group. However, an issue that has not received the same attention is an assessment of how these two facets; network structure and external networking behaviors affect SME performance. In assessing their antecedents, in this research we move beyond the traditional IMP literature, using emotional intelligence and entrepreneurial style to assess CEOs' managerial style. Network structure was assessed by the extent to which structural holes and degrees of centrality were present. Data was collected from 227 CEOs of small Iranian information technology companies. To test our hypotheses, we combined the use of structural equation modeling and social network analysis — a dual methodology that has not been adopted before. The results show that emotional intelligence drives entrepreneurial style, network structure and external networking behavior. SME performance is influenced by both network structure and external networking behavior. The mediating role of network structure is also discussed. Here our results show that entrepreneurial style does not influence external networking behavior. Several managerial implications of these findings are discussed.  相似文献

Business-to-business (B2B) research is interdisciplinary in nature. A key element of interdisciplinarity is integration or combination of ideas, perspectives, and/or methods from different disciplines oriented toward producing new knowledge. However, domain silos often keep researchers focused on similar problems, methods, and theories over time. To break down these silos, Industrial Marketing Management introduces a new format of special issues focusing on interdisciplinary research, steered by two new associate editors: Elina Jaakkola and Stefan Markovic. The intention is to publish these interdisciplinary issues on a regular basis, each calling for novel applications of particular topics, concepts, theories, and/or methods from disciplines outside B2B research. The main aim of the interdisciplinary issues is to broaden the scope and potency of B2B research. Scholars from the B2B domain and other disciplines are invited to suggest interdisciplinary topics and themes that could be researched in the B2B sphere and that would be worthy of a journal issue.  相似文献

This paper investigates how sustainability spreads across supply networks. Adopting an Industrial Marketing & Purchasing (IMP) Interaction Approach (Håkansson, 1982), we seek to understand sustainability spread as a change process that affects different supply network actors and the impact of power and trust on the spreading process. The paper reports on an in-depth case study of the development of a sustainability initiative in the bio-chemical industry, based on data collection with multiple supply network actors across several tiers, providing unique and rich insights into understanding sustainability spread in a supply network and the perceptions of multiple supply network actors on the role of power and trust on the spreading process. Data collection comprised 20 semi-structured interviews spanning eight supply network actors, supported by secondary data such as archival records. The case study indicates that both coercive and non-coercive power as well as trust, significantly impact the actors' engagement in sustainability initiatives and its wider spread in supply networks. The paper contributes to the literature on sustainable supply chain management and IMP research on sustainability spread and, in particular, provides insights on the impact of power and trust on the process of sustainability spread across dyadic relationships into the wider supply network.  相似文献

The IMP (Industrial Marketing and Purchasing) Group has engaged in a number of interesting developments in the past few years. Particularly adventurous have been the agendas of ‘pictures’ and sense-making and of time. In this paper we argue that borrowing and combining contemporary foci within social science on narratives, identity, culture and epoché temporality (for which we use the acronym N.I.C.E) allows the construction of an approach that can integrate these IMP agendas into a new research direction for the group that will keep it at the leading edge of marketing research. The purpose of our paper is to introduce and integrate discursive and temporal elements into the understanding and research of business networks to develop a more dynamic and hermeneutic approach. Our purpose is to provide a contribution to the field in exploring how identities are formed within business networks through narrative episodes in interconnecting relationships over time. We bring together all of the elements of a NICE agenda in an attempt to provide an integrative, ‘multi-lens’ theory of business networks focussed within the IMP research tradition. In doing so, we construct meaning as itself networked; sense-making involves relating presently narrated episodes to symbolic and material aspects of other narrative network episodes and events through emplotment and storying.  相似文献
