Good or Bad, Unified CIT Law Arrived

On 16 March 2007 China's top legislature, the National People's Congress (NPC), passed the long-awaited Unified Corporate Income Tax Law (CIT Law) by a dominant majority vote. Chinese companies currently pay income tax at a nominal rate of 33%, while their foreign counterparts, which benefit from tax waivers and incentives, pay an average of 15%. The Unified CIT Law, aiming to impose a flat 25 % tax on both and provide them with a level playing field, will come into effect on 1 January 2008. No doubt, this CIT reform will bring significant and long-term impact on both domestic companies and foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs). In particular, a number of auto brands in China's auto industry are from joint ventures and FIEs. Whether the auto price to go up or down under this new law? Odd Jobs,Bad Habits,and Ethical Implications: Smoking-Related Outcomes of Children’s Early Employment Intensity

Considerable interest has long existed in two separate phenomena of considerable social interest, namely children’s early exposure to employment outside of any organizational, legislative, or collective bargaining protection, and teenage smoking. We used data from a large national survey to address possible direct and indirect links between children’s early employment intensity and smoking (both intent and history) because of significant long-term implications of the link between work and well-being in a vulnerable population. Fifth to ninth grade children’s (N = 19,018) informal employment intensity (number of odd jobs) was related to both smoking history and smoking intent, and these effects were partially mediated by the amount of weekly spending money and self-esteem. The number of one’s parents and friends who smoke separately moderated the relationships between self-esteem and weekly spending money, and smoking behavior. These findings illustrate the complex consequences of young children’s exposure to early employment, and emphasize the need for research on the ethical implications of pre- and early teenagers who are employed outside of the formal employment context.

Are Variety-Seekers Bad Customers?

SUMMARY

Variety-seeking behavior occurs if customers derive utility from a change of service providers. It has negative consequences for the firm's profits, because it functions as a moderating factor in the relationship of customer satisfaction and customer loyalty. Even by offering high service quality variety-seekers cannot be retained. Therefore variety-seekers are often seen as “bad” customers, because they are not loyal to the firm. This article will show variety-seeking behavior in a more positive light. Variety-seekers are satisfied customers and therefore they are likely to engage in positive word-of-mouth communication. Deviant behavior in retail,when sales associates “Go Bad”! Examining the relationship between the work–family interface,job stress,and salesperson deviance

The unique role of retail sales associates combined with retailers desire to establish relational selling, make associates vulnerable to work–family conflict (WFC). Unfortunately, research examining how retail sales associates cope with a WFC is limited. This research investigates relationships between WFC, job stress, and three dimensions of salesperson deviance: organizational, interpersonal, and frontline. Findings indicate that WFC has a significant direct effect on all three deviant behaviors, as well as job stress. Interestingly, the relationship between job stress and deviant behavior is not significant. This finding adds to the debate regarding job stress as a mediator between WFC and deviant behavior or outcome variable.     

Why Do Consumers Stay When Things Are Bad and Leave When Things Are Good?

The study seeks to identify and classify motives for customers leaving when things are good and motives for staying when things are bad. Thus, this study identifies reasons for remaining in a business relationship when not satisfied. These motives are termed Capture Assistants. The study also identifies reasons for leaving a provider when satisfied. These motives are termed Escape Assistants. The critical incident technique was used to gain insights. A total of 219 incidents were classified. The results reveal that Capture Assistants hinder customers from leaving because they manifest themselves as fears of loss. Conversely, Escape Assistants motivate satisfied customers to leave because they promise gains. Managerial implications are outlined.

For the Good or the Bad? Interactive Effects of Transformational Leadership with Moral and Authoritarian Leadership Behaviors

Although the ethical aspects of transformational leadership have attracted considerable attention, very little is known about followers’ reactions to the moral and immoral conduct of transformational leaders. Against this background, this study examined whether and how transformational leadership interacts with moral and authoritarian leadership behaviors in predicting followers’ in-role and extra-role efforts. Building on attribution theory, we hypothesized that the positive and negative effects of these leadership behaviors would be particularly pronounced for highly transformational leaders given that this leadership style elicits strong attention and sense-making efforts among followers. We tested our model in a sample of 228 individuals comprising 114 leader–follower dyads from a wide range of organizations and industries. In line with our hypotheses, results revealed that for highly transformational leaders, moral leadership behaviors related positively to employees’ in-role and extra-role efforts whereas authoritarian leadership behaviors related negatively to employees’ in-role and extra-role efforts. In contrast, moral and authoritarian leadership behaviors did not significantly affect followers’ reactions to leaders low in transformational leadership. Taken together, these findings suggest that transformational leadership, contrary to its largely positive perception in the literature, can be a rather mixed blessing. Implications for theory, future research, and managerial practice are discussed.

Clustering,MNEs, and Innovation: Who Benefits and How?

Abstract

This paper explores three under-researched questions in the literature on multinational enterprises (MNEs), clustering, and innovation. First, to what extent does multinationality lead to higher rates of innovation activity and performance? Second, what, if any, is the link between MNE cluster location and innovation inputs and outputs? Third, are there any significant differences between enterprises belonging to domestic and overseas MNEs in these regards? Evidence is based primarily on 11,775 firms derived from the UK Community Innovation Survey 2007. Diversity in the regional economy exerts the most consistent positive influence, followed by the scale of employment in the enterprise’s own industry. Enterprises belonging to domestic MNEs appear to exert higher levels of innovation effort. However, evidence regarding their superiority in innovation outputs was weaker. Contrary to Michael Porter’s work, it appears that enterprises belonging to overseas firms benefit more than domestic firms.
