This article provides observations on the state of the art in marketing research during 1987–1997. As such, it updates the
earlier state-of-the-art review by Malhotra (1988), which won theJournal of the Academy of Marketing Science (JAMS) Best Article Award. The primary thrust of articles published in theJournal of Marketing Research during 1987–1997 is reviewed to determine important areas of research. In each of these areas, the authors summarize recent
developments, highlight the state of the art, offer some critical observations, and identify directions for future research.
They present a cross-classification of various techniques and subject areas, and make some observations on the applications
of these techniques to address specific substantive and methodological issues in marketing research. The article concludes
with some general directions for marketing research in the twenty-first century.
Naresh K. Malhotra is Regents’ Professor in the DuPree College of Management at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He is listed in Marquis
Who’s Who in America. In an article by Wheatley and Wilson (1987 AMA Educators’ Proceedings), he was ranked number one in
the country based on articles published in theJournal of Marketing Research during 1980–1985. He also holds the all-time record for the maximum number of publications in theJournal of Health Care Marketing. He is ranked number one based on publications in theJournal of the Academy of Marketing Science (JAMS) since its inception through Volume 23, 1995. He is also number one based on publications inJAMS during the 10-year period 1986–1995. He has published more than 75 articles in major refereed journals including theJournal of the Academy of Marketing Science, theJournal of Marketing Research, theJournal of Consumer Research, Marketing Science, theJournal of Marketing, theJournal of Retailing, theJournal of Health Care Marketing, and leading journals in statistics, management science, and psychology. He was chairman of the Academy of Marketing Science
Foundation from 1996 to 1998, president of the Academy of Marketing Science from 1994 to 1996, and chairman of the Board of
Governors from 1990 to 1992. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Academy and Fellow of the Decision Sciences Institute.
Mark Peterson is an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Arlington. His research interests include methods, affect, international
marketing, and quality of life. His work has been published in theInternational Marketing Review, theJournal of Business Research, and theJournal of Macromarketing. He is on the editorial review board for theJournal of Macromarketing.
Susan Bardi Kleiser is an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Texas at Arlington. She holds a Ph.D. in marketing from the University
of Cincinnati. Her research interests include consumer decision making, product management, international marketing, marketing

Considerable attention is typically given to Type I and Type II errors when conducting empirical research. This article presents
an error, often ignored in marketing and consumer behavior research, termed Type IV error. This error results from the improper
investigation of interactions in an analysis of variance. A review of research published inJournal of Marketing Research andJournal of Consumer Research found widespread occurrence of Type IV errors. Illustrative improper interpretations of interactions are discussed and approaches
for properly investigating interactions are presented. Situations where interactions need to be tested and interpreted are
noted. These situations are contrasted with those where it is more appropriate to examine cell mean differences. The correct
use of graphs of cell means is also discussed. Guidelines are presented for avoiding Type IV errors.
He has previously been a visiting associate professor at the Wharton School and visiting research fellow at the IC2 Institute, University of Texas at Austin, where he has also taught at the marketing department. He has published in theJournal of Marketing Research, Journal of Marketing, Psychometrika, Marketing Letters, Sociological Methods & Research, Decision

This article examines factors leading to a firm’s satisfaction with its marketing channels. The authors build on existing
studies of consumer satisfaction and the channels literature. They add a transaction cost factor and use the discrepancy model
to examine the determinants of satisfaction. Findings from a survey of Canadian exporters show that a firm’s domestic performance,
its previous experience, the uncertainty it faces, and its ability to change channels and monitor channel operations all provide
significant explanations for management satisfaction.

Two important areas are underexplored in the relationship between marketing resources and performance. First, the subject
has been primarily investigated in the context of Western countries, and inadequate attention has been given to emerging economies.
Second, despite the recent growth in globalization, the moderating role of globalization on the link between marketing resources
and performance has not been investigated. Addressing these important gaps, this article focuses on an emerging economy (China)
and explores the moderating effect of globalization on this link. Specifically, the authors develop several hypotheses highlighting
the moderating role of globalization activities (global product sourcing, global market seeking, and global partnership) on
the link between marketing resources (market orientation, entrepreneurial orientation, and innovative capability) and firm
performance. The findings of the moderating role of globalization provide several important implications for marketing theory
development and managerial practice.

We present and illustrate a methodology by which researchers can assess the relative importance and test the significance
of various marketing-related factors as they influence the degree of standardization/customization of international marketing
strategy. The standardization decision is viewed as a continuum with complete standardization and complete customization as
the two extremes. Specific hypotheses related to the impact of marketing mix variables on the degree of standardization are
formulated. These hypotheses are empirically investigated through a survey of international marketing managers. This investigation
is carried out using conjoint analysis. Bridging methodology is introduced in order to accommodate the large number of variables
in the study. The analysis is conducted at the individual level, at the group level, and at the aggregate level. Finally,
we discuss the methodological and managerial implications of the findings and potential areas of future research.
His previous research has appeared in theInternational Marketing Review and theJournal of Euromarketing.
He is also the president of the Academy of Marketing Science, a distinguished fellow of the academy and fellow of the Decision

In a series of three studies, a four-level hierarchical model of personality was employed to identify the antecedents and
three validating criteria of a newly developed trait labeledjob resourcefulness (JR). JR is defined as an enduring disposition to garner scarce resources and overcome obstacles in pursuit of job-related
goals. Across three service contexts, JR was shown to predict customer orientation, self-rated performance, and supervisor-rated
performance. The results also revealed that the hierarchical model accounted for more variance in performance ratings than
one version of the 5-Factor Model of personality. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for selecting high-performing
service employees.

Cognitive response coding is relevant for researchers who collect cognitive responses from individuals in the form of answers
to open-ended questions or as thoughts produced while exposed to advertising messages. Coding of these cognitive responses
is normally completed by a panel of two to four independent judges. This article is the first to empirically investigate cognitive
intent congruence aspects underlining the data generated through cognitive response coding. The results show that there are
definite gaps in the congruence of cognitive intent between the cognitive coding results that respondents, serving as cognitive
response coders of their own thoughts, can provide and those cognitive response patterns provided by independent raters. The
current study’s results raise a “yellow” caution flag regarding external independent raters’ ability to produce valid cognitive
intent coding patterns that cannot be ignored by future researchers. The authors offer interpretation, implications, limitations,
and directions for future research.

In this article, the authors first propose a simple model summarizing the key drivers of customer loyalty. Then, on the basis
of this model and drawing on key insights from the preceding articles in this issue, they outline a set of issues for further
research related to the quality-value-loyalty chain. Next, the authors develop a conceptual framework that integrates the
quality-value-loyalty chain with the “pyramid model,” which emphasizes the increasing importance of technology-customer, technology-employee,
and technology-company linkages in serving customers. Using this integrated framework as a spring-board, they identify a number
of avenues for additional inquiry pertaining to the three types of linkages.

The e-marketing mix: A contribution of the e-tailing wars 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
In the context of the wars between the upstart Internet retailers and the existing bricks-and-mortar retailers, many e-marketing
techniques were invented. This article develops a single unifying and theoretically based taxonomy for e-marketing techniques:
the e-marketing mix. Drawing on the paradigms of exchange, relationships, and digital interactions in networks, 11 e-marketing
functions are identified that form the elements of the e-marketing mix. Nine of the 11 e-marketing functions are considered
basic, while 7 functions moderate the effects of others and are termedoverlapping. The 11 e-marketing functions provide a categorization of the e-marketing techniques. Compared to the conventional marketing
mix, the e-marketing mix has more overlapping elements and directly represents personalization, an aspect of segmentation,
as a basic function. The existence of multiple elements that are basic and overlapping in the e-marketing mix indicates that
integration across elements should be more commonplace compared to the traditional marketing mix.
Kirthi Kalyanam is the J. C. Penney Research Professor in the Department of Marketing and the director of E*Business Initiatives at the Leavey School of Business at Santa Clara University. The Leavey School offers the premier M.B.A.
program for working professionals in Silicon Valley. He teaches e-business, channel marketing, and retailing in the EMBA,
M.B.A., and undergraduate programs. His research interests are in e-business, retailing, and pricing. His publications have
appeared as lead articles inMarketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Letters, Journal of Retailing, andJournal of Interactive Marketing. His research paper, published in theJournal of Marketing Research on GeoDemographic Marketing, was selected as a finalist for the American Marketing Association’s Paul E. Green Award for impact on the practice of marketing.
Professor Kalyanam has received the dean’s award for outstanding teaching and/or research contributions. He has also taught
at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, the Krannert School of Management, and the Department of Consumer
Sciences and Retailing at Purdue University and at DePaul University in Chicago. He received his Ph.D. in business administration
from the Krannert School of Management, Purdue University.
Shelby McIntyre is a professor of marketing at the Leavey School of Business, Santa Clara University. He is also a research associate at
the Retail Workbench, a research and education center dedicated to applying advanced information technology to the problems
of retailing. He earned a B.S. in engineering (1965), an M.B.A. (1973), and a Ph.D. (1979), all from Stanford University.
He has subsequently published more than 50 articles in leading marketing journals, including 5 in theJournal of Marketing Research, 2 inManagement Science, and 11 in theJournal of Retailing. He is on the editorial board of theJournal of Marketing. He has twice received the annual award from theJournal of Retailing for the article “Best Contributing to Theory and Practice in Retail Marketing.” He teaches marketing information systems,
marketing research, brand management, and marketing management and was the chair of the Marketing Department at Santa Clara
University from 1983 to 1991. His research interests currently focus on decision support systems, retail-related decision

In this article, the authors first propose and discuss a conceptual framework pertaining to the theme of this special issue.
This framework portrays “markets” as consisting of “customers” and “consumers,” specifies the distinction as well as linkages
between the two, and outlines specific components of individual linkages between pairs of entities within markets. Using this
framework as a backdrop, the article then provides an overview of the rest of the special issue by discussing how each of

This study explores the relationships between selected marketing mix elements and the creation of brand equity. The authors
propose a conceptual framework in which marketing elements are related to the dimensions of brand equity, that is, perceived
quality, brand loyalty, and brand associations combined with brand awareness. These dimensions are then related to brand equity.
The empirical tests using a structural equation model support the research hypotheses. The results show that frequent price
promotions, such as price deals, are related to low brand equity, whereas high advertising spending, high price, good store
image, and high distribution intensity are related to high brand equity.

role benefits, and psychological withdrawal—in a model of organizational role stress. Results indicate that intrinsic motivational
orientations reduce perceptions of role conflict and role ambiguity, and increase job satisfaction; that perceived role benefits
positively influence job satisfaction; and that job dissatisfaction is the primary cause of psychological withdrawal. The
study supports the importance of coping efforts in models of organizational role stress among marketing personnel.

Business pundits have enthusiastically prognosticated about a seamless, mobile world where commerce occurs on an anywhere,
anytime basis. This type of commerce has been referred to as mobile commerce or, more simply, m-commerce. However, there have

The use of trade promotions as a channel-programming tool has increased substantially in the past decade. In focusing on the
tactical implications of trade promotions, some firms appear to have underestimated the tendency of poorly planned trade promotions
to interfere with the implementation of a marketing strategy. In this article, the authors examine the complex issue of trade
promotion use from both long-term and short-term perspectives. Different trade promotions can produce dissimilar types of
channel cooperation, consumer responses, and postpromotion channel member behavior, resulting in differences in distribution-programming
preferences between suppliers and retailers. The authors argue that the adjudication of these different preference structures
is addressed through the market power of the channel participants. Based on an assessment of these channel relationships,
an approach for suggested courses of action is forwarded.

Studies that rank the relative quality of scholarly marketing journals have relied primarily on expert opinion surveys and
citation analyses. The authors use a new approach that combines elements of these two alternatives and compile a database
of 6,294 citations (representing 3,423 different articles) from 109 syllabi obtained from a broad sampling of AACSB-International-accredited
schools with marketing doctoral programs. The five most citedjournals (Journal of Marketing, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Science, andJournal of the Academy of Marketing Science) account for 66.5 percent of citations in the syllabi. Rankings of journals other than the top five vary markedly from previous
journal quality studies. Few articles are cited in common across programs, and the authors find considerable variation even
within individual seminar types. The findings provide a new basis for assessing the quality of journals and provide new insights
about the content of doctoral programs.

Building on behavioral decision research, this article provides guidelines to charitable marketing managers regarding the
effect of charitable direct marketing appeals on donor decision judgments. Several charitable direct mail appeals (factors)
were empirically tested simultaneously in a factorial experimental design involving 18,144 potential donors to determine how
donor decision strategies influenced choice judgments about whether to give and estimation judgments about how much to give.
The results indicate that suggested anchors and framing influence response rate (choice) but not size of gift. Reference information
(factual/statistical and narrative/experiential) influences size of gift (estimation) but not response rate. Implications
for charitable marketing managers are discussed.

The typical view of a marketing channel is that of a manufacturer-designed and-controlled distribution system. However, today,
marketing functions, as well as market power, are more evenly distributed in the channel. In organizing and managing the modern
channel, it is important to understand the business circumstances and priorities confronting channel members. This article
studies how reseller firms establish their goal hierarchies and how these goals are related to performance. It hypothesizes
that goal priorities emerge in relation to the environmental imperatives faced by the firm. The article develops hypotheses
that are tested on survey data collected from a sample of franchisee firms, using structural equation models. The results
support all the hypotheses about the effects of primary goals on performance. The effects of secondary goals are not unequivocal
but informative nevertheless. Overall, the study points to interesting theoretical and managerial conclusions.

A conceptual model of preventive health care behavior is proposed and tested. Results suggest that preventive health care
behaviors are strongly influenced by the value consumers perceive in engaging in such actions. This value is greatly affected
by response efficacy, or the person’s belief that a specific action will mitigate the health threat. A separate consideration
affecting adherence to a prescribed preventive health care behavior is self-efficacy, or the person’s belief that the target
behaviors can be enacted. Additionally, health motivation and health consciousness are also shown to influence preventive
health care behaviors. Future research directions and managerial implications of the findings are outlined.

This research develops and tests a measurement model representing the ethical work climate of marketing employees involved
in sales and/or service-providing positions. A series of studies are used to identify potential items and validate four ethical-climate
dimensions. The four dimensions represent trust/responsibility, the perceived ethicalness of peers’ behavior, the perceived
consequences of violating ethical norms, and the nature of selling practices as communicated by the firm. Both first- and
second-order levels of abstraction are validated. Relationships with role stress, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment
are described and discussed. The scale is unique from previous attempts in its scope, intended purpose (marketing employees),
the validation procedures, and in that it is not scenario dependent. The results suggest the usefulness of the marketing ethical
climate construct in both developing theory and in providing advice for marketing practice.
