We present new tests for the form of the volatility function which are based on stochastic processes of the integrated volatility. We prove weak convergence of these processes to centered processes whose conditional distributions are Gaussian. In the case of testing for a constant volatility the limiting process are standard Brownian bridges. As a consequence an asymptotic distribution free test and bootstrap tests (for testing of a general parametric form) can easily be implemented. It is demonstrated that the new tests are more than the currently available procedures. The new approach is also demonstrated by means of a simulation study.  相似文献

This paper is concerned with the Bayesian analysis of stochastic volatility (SV) models with leverage. Specifically, the paper shows how the often used Kim et al. [1998. Stochastic volatility: likelihood inference and comparison with ARCH models. Review of Economic Studies 65, 361–393] method that was developed for SV models without leverage can be extended to models with leverage. The approach relies on the novel idea of approximating the joint distribution of the outcome and volatility innovations by a suitably constructed ten-component mixture of bivariate normal distributions. The resulting posterior distribution is summarized by MCMC methods and the small approximation error in working with the mixture approximation is corrected by a reweighting procedure. The overall procedure is fast and highly efficient. We illustrate the ideas on daily returns of the Tokyo Stock Price Index. Finally, extensions of the method are described for superposition models (where the log-volatility is made up of a linear combination of heterogenous and independent autoregressions) and heavy-tailed error distributions (student and log-normal).  相似文献

In this paper, we study a Bayesian approach to flexible modeling of conditional distributions. The approach uses a flexible model for the joint distribution of the dependent and independent variables and then extracts the conditional distributions of interest from the estimated joint distribution. We use a finite mixture of multivariate normals (FMMN) to estimate the joint distribution. The conditional distributions can then be assessed analytically or through simulations. The discrete variables are handled through the use of latent variables. The estimation procedure employs an MCMC algorithm. We provide a characterization of the Kullback–Leibler closure of FMMN and show that the joint and conditional predictive densities implied by the FMMN model are consistent estimators for a large class of data generating processes with continuous and discrete observables. The method can be used as a robust regression model with discrete and continuous dependent and independent variables and as a Bayesian alternative to semi- and non-parametric models such as quantile and kernel regression. In experiments, the method compares favorably with classical nonparametric and alternative Bayesian methods.  相似文献

A new version of the local scale model of Shephard (1994) is presented. Its features are identically distributed evolution equation disturbances, the incorporation of in-the-mean effects, and the incorporation of variance regressors. A Bayesian posterior simulator and a new simulation smoother are presented. The model is applied to publicly available daily exchange rate and asset return series, and is compared with t-GARCH and Lognormal stochastic volatility formulations using Bayes factors.  相似文献

Many financial assets, such as currencies, commodities, and equity stocks, exhibit both jumps and stochastic volatility, which are especially prominent in the market after the financial crisis. Some strategic decision making problems also involve American-style options. In this paper, we develop a novel, fast and accurate method for pricing American and barrier options in regime switching jump diffusion models. By blending regime switching models and Markov chain approximation techniques in the Fourier domain, we provide a unified approach to price Bermudan, American options and barrier options under general stochastic volatility models with jumps. The models considered include Heston, Hull–White, Stein–Stein, Scott, the 3/2 model, and the recently proposed 4/2 model and the α-Hypergeometric model with general jump amplitude distributions in the return process. Applications include the valuation of discretely monitored contracts as well as continuously monitored contracts common in the foreign exchange markets. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed method.  相似文献

Most of the empirical applications of the stochastic volatility (SV) model are based on the assumption that the conditional distribution of returns, given the latent volatility process, is normal. In this paper, the SV model based on a conditional normal distribution is compared with SV specifications using conditional heavy‐tailed distributions, especially Student's t‐distribution and the generalized error distribution. To estimate the SV specifications, a simulated maximum likelihood approach is applied. The results based on daily data on exchange rates and stock returns reveal that the SV model with a conditional normal distribution does not adequately account for the two following empirical facts simultaneously: the leptokurtic distribution of the returns and the low but slowly decaying autocorrelation functions of the squared returns. It is shown that these empirical facts are more adequately captured by an SV model with a conditional heavy‐tailed distribution. It also turns out that the choice of the conditional distribution has systematic effects on the parameter estimates of the volatility process. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

In this paper the correlation structure in the classical leverage stochastic volatility (SV) model is generalized based on a linear spline. In the new model the correlation between the return and volatility innovations is time varying and depends nonparametrically on the type of news arrived to the market. Theoretical properties of the proposed model are examined. The model estimation and comparison are conducted by Bayesian methods. The performance of the estimates are examined in simulations. The new model is fitted to daily and weekly US data and compared with the classical SV and GARCH models in terms of their in-sample and out-of-sample performances. Empirical results suggest evidence in favor of the proposed model. In particular, the new model finds strong evidence of time varying leverage effect in individual stocks when the classical model fails to identify the leverage effect.  相似文献

Motivated by the common problem of constructing predictive distributions for daily asset returns over horizons of one to several trading days, this article introduces a new model for time series. This model is a generalization of the Markov normal mixture model in which the mixture components are themselves normal mixtures, and it is a specific case of an artificial neural network model with two hidden layers. The article uses the model to construct predictive distributions of daily S&P 500 returns 1971–2005 and one‐year maturity bond returns 1987–2007. For these time series the model compares favorably with ARCH and stochastic volatility models. The article concludes by using the model to form predictive distributions of one‐ to ten‐day returns during volatile episodes for the S&P 500 and bond return series. This study provides daily conditional value-at-risk (C-VaR) forecasts for a foreign currency portfolio comprising the USD/EUR, USD/JPY, and USD/BRL currencies. To do so, we estimate multivariate stochastic volatility models with time-varying conditional correlations using a Bayesian Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm. Then, given the model-specific currency return density forecasts, we make the optimal portfolio choice by minimizing the C-VaR through numerical optimization. According to out-of-sample experiment, including emerging markets into the currency basket is essential for downside risk management, and considering model uncertainty as well as the parameter uncertainty can improve the portfolio performance.  相似文献

Estimation and prediction in high dimensional multivariate factor stochastic volatility models is an important and active research area, because such models allow a parsimonious representation of multivariate stochastic volatility. Bayesian inference for factor stochastic volatility models is usually done by Markov chain Monte Carlo methods (often by particle Markov chain Monte Carlo methods), which are usually slow for high dimensional or long time series because of the large number of parameters and latent states involved. Our article makes two contributions. The first is to propose a fast and accurate variational Bayes methods to approximate the posterior distribution of the states and parameters in factor stochastic volatility models. The second is to extend this batch methodology to develop fast sequential variational updates for prediction as new observations arrive. The methods are applied to simulated and real datasets, and shown to produce good approximate inference and prediction compared to the latest particle Markov chain Monte Carlo approaches, but are much faster.  相似文献

This paper compares alternative models of time‐varying volatility on the basis of the accuracy of real‐time point and density forecasts of key macroeconomic time series for the USA. We consider Bayesian autoregressive and vector autoregressive models that incorporate some form of time‐varying volatility, precisely random walk stochastic volatility, stochastic volatility following a stationary AR process, stochastic volatility coupled with fat tails, GARCH and mixture of innovation models. The results show that the AR and VAR specifications with conventional stochastic volatility dominate other volatility specifications, in terms of point forecasting to some degree and density forecasting to a greater degree. We develop in this paper a novel portfolio selection framework with a feature of double robustness in both return distribution modeling and portfolio optimization. While predicting the future return distributions always represents the most compelling challenge in investment, any underlying distribution can be always well approximated by utilizing a mixture distribution, if we are able to ensure that the component list of a mixture distribution includes all possible distributions corresponding to the scenario analysis of potential market modes. Adopting a mixture distribution enables us to (1) reduce the problem of distribution prediction to a parameter estimation problem in which the mixture weights of a mixture distribution are estimated under a Bayesian learning scheme and the corresponding credible regions of the mixture weights are obtained as well and (2) harmonize information from different channels, such as historical data, market implied information and investors׳ subjective views. We further formulate a robust mean-CVaR portfolio selection problem to deal with the inherent uncertainty in predicting the future return distributions. By employing the duality theory, we show that the robust portfolio selection problem via learning with a mixture model can be reformulated as a linear program or a second-order cone program, which can be effectively solved in polynomial time. We present the results of simulation analyses and primary empirical tests to illustrate a significance of the proposed approach and demonstrate its pros and cons.  相似文献

This paper proposes a Bayesian nonparametric modeling approach for the return distribution in multivariate GARCH models. In contrast to the parametric literature the return distribution can display general forms of asymmetry and thick tails. An infinite mixture of multivariate normals is given a flexible Dirichlet process prior. The GARCH functional form enters into each of the components of this mixture. We discuss conjugate methods that allow for scale mixtures and nonconjugate methods which provide mixing over both the location and scale of the normal components. MCMC methods are introduced for posterior simulation and computation of the predictive density. Bayes factors and density forecasts with comparisons to GARCH models with Student-tt innovations demonstrate the gains from our flexible modeling approach.  相似文献

We develop importance sampling methods for computing two popular Bayesian model comparison criteria, namely, the marginal likelihood and the deviance information criterion (DIC) for time‐varying parameter vector autoregressions (TVP‐VARs), where both the regression coefficients and volatilities are drifting over time. The proposed estimators are based on the integrated likelihood, which are substantially more reliable than alternatives. Using US data, we find overwhelming support for the TVP‐VAR with stochastic volatility compared to a conventional constant coefficients VAR with homoskedastic innovations. Most of the gains, however, appear to have come from allowing for stochastic volatility rather than time variation in the VAR coefficients or contemporaneous relationships. Indeed, according to both criteria, a constant coefficients VAR with stochastic volatility outperforms the more general model with time‐varying parameters.  相似文献

This paper presents an extension of the stochastic volatility model which allows for level shifts in volatility of stock market returns, known as structural breaks. These shifts are endogenously driven by large return shocks (innovations), reflecting large pieces of market news. These shocks are identified from the data as being bigger in absolute terms than the values of two threshold parameters of the model: one for the negative shocks and one for the positive shocks. The model can be employed to investigate different sources of stock market volatility shifts driven by market news, without relying on exogenous information. In addition to this, it has a number of interesting features which enable us to study the effects of large return shocks on future levels of market volatility. The above properties of the model are shown based on a study for the US stock market volatility.  相似文献

In this paper, we introduce a threshold stochastic volatility model with explanatory variables. The Bayesian method is considered in estimating the parameters of the proposed model via the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) algorithm. Gibbs sampling and Metropolis–Hastings sampling methods are used for drawing the posterior samples of the parameters and the latent variables. In the simulation study, the accuracy of the MCMC algorithm, the sensitivity of the algorithm for model assumptions, and the robustness of the posterior distribution under different priors are considered. Simulation results indicate that our MCMC algorithm converges fast and that the posterior distribution is robust under different priors and model assumptions. A real data example was analyzed to explain the asymmetric behavior of stock markets.  相似文献

We address the nonparametric model validation problem for hidden Markov models with partially observable variables and hidden states. We achieve this goal by constructing a nonparametric simultaneous confidence envelope for transition density function of the observable variables and checking whether the parametric density estimate is contained within such an envelope. Our specification test procedure is motivated by a functional connection between the transition density of the observable variables and the Markov transition kernel of the hidden states. Our approach is applicable for continuous-time diffusion models, stochastic volatility models, nonlinear time series models, and models with market microstructure noise.  相似文献

The Components of Output Growth: A Stochastic Frontier Analysis   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
This paper uses Bayesian stochastic frontier methods to decompose output change into technical, efficiency and input changes. In the context of macroeconomic growth exercises, which typically involve small and noisy data sets, we argue that stochastic frontier methods are useful since they incorporate measurement error and assume a (flexible) parametric form for the production relationship. These properties enable us to calculate measures of uncertainty associated with the decomposition and minimize the risk of overfitting the noise in the data. Tools for Bayesian inference in such models are developed. An empirical investigation using data from 17 OECD countries for 10 years illustrates the practicality and usefulness of our approach.  相似文献
