The increasing length of time that students take to attain the doctorate (TTD) is of concern in higher education. Separate focus groups with students and eight faculty members were used to investigate factors perceived to influence TTD in Education. The percentage of participants citing a theme (theme frequency) and the percentage of statements referring to a particular theme (theme intensity) were used to describe the strength of the associations found. Analysis of students and faculty responses suggests that structure, defined as the nature and arrangement of program tasks and resources, is strongly associated with TTD whereas communication, the way program expectations and requirements are communicated, has a moderate association. Students’ responses indicate that the nature of the dissertation committee formed (committee) and the desire to work and attain goals despite obstacles encountered (motivation) are each strongly associated with TTD whereas faculty responses indicate these associations are moderate and minimal, respectively. Faculty responses indicate that the amount and quality of academic preparation received (preparation), and the nature of academic guidance, mentoring and supervision received (advising) have at least a moderate association with TTD whereas students’ responses suggest the association is at most moderate. Whereas faculty comments suggest that whether a student enrolls part-time or full-time (enrollment) is moderately associated with TTD, enrollment did not emerge as a factor among students. Recommendations for practice and further research are provided.  相似文献

Jim Ramsay was born on September 5, 1942, in Prince George, British Columbia. He pursued undergraduate studies at the University of Alberta, where he completed a BEd in 1964 with a major in English and a minor in mathematics. He then specialized in statistics and psychometry, earning a PhD in psychology from Princeton University in 1966. After holding a temporary lectureship in the Department of Psychology at University College London for one year, he joined the Department of Psychology at McGill University, where he rose through the academic ranks. He was chair of his department from 1986 to 1989 and spent sabbatical leaves in Cambridge, Grenoble, and Toulouse. He was named professor emeritus upon his retirement in 2007. Jim is the author of four influential books and over 100 peer‐reviewed articles in statistical and psychometric journals. He developed much of the statistical theory behind multidimensional scaling and is widely recognized as the founder of functional data analysis. Three of his papers were read to the Royal Statistical Society, and another won The Canadian Journal of Statistics 2000 Best Paper Award. The Statistical Society of Canada (SSC) awarded him a Gold Medal for research in 1998 and an honorary membership in 2012. Jim was president of the Psychometric Society in 1981–82 and president of the SSC in 2002–03. Many studies have examined the factors that influence academic performance in primary and secondary education as well as at university, with the purpose of enhancing learning at these stages and reducing drop-out rates. It is within this research framework that we want to emphasise the deficient performance of students enrolled on the statistics course in the Faculty of Psychology at the University of Barcelona. Consequently, this paper attempts to determine the factors that affect student performance in this subject by undertaking an analysis of a structural equation model and determining its stability over time. In order to accomplish our objective, we worked with two samples of students enrolled statistics classes. The first group comprised 211 students enrolled in the academic year 2000–2001, while the second comprised 287 students enrolled in the academic year 2001–2002. By administering a questionnaire, we obtained information concerning such variables as demographic data, previous academic record, information related to the subject and the degree of satisfaction with it, and the final mark obtained by the students in the subject. The parameters for each group of students were estimated separately and the goodness of fit of the proposed structural model was assessed. The data analysis showed a good fit with both data bases, but the set of estimated parameters differed in the two academic years under consideration.  相似文献

The implementation of year-round operation has often been suggested as a means for accommodating additional demand for student admissions at a university campus of fixed capacity. However, because the student flow process at a university has not been well understood, many institutions have been disappointed to find the actual benefits resulting from the addition of a regular summer program of instruction to be far less than they had expected. This paper demonstrates that, due to established patterns of student attendance, a reasonable expectation of a change to year-round operation is that the undergraduate admission rate will increase by 5 per cent when enrollment is held fixed. Moreover, the summer term will attract only one-third as many undergraduate students as are enrolled during the regular academic year. These computations assume that no attempt is made to exert control over student attendance patterns.A queueing model is developed that relates the admission rate to the proportion of students who belong to various cohorts with common workload requirements and attendance patterns. Data gathered at the University of California, Berkeley campus is used to estimate these proportions for a campus which offers a year-round program. From these estimates are derived values for the overall admission rate and the ratio of summer enrollment to average nonsummer enrollment. These values are then compared with those obtained for a campus of like size which does not offer a year-round program of instruction. The paper concludes that, unless an institution is willing to exert control over student attendance patterns, university year-round operation is probably not economical in a society which places heavy emphasis on the summer as a time when students should vacation or take temporary jobs.  相似文献

County-level location patterns of INC5000 companies provide one map of American entrepreneurship and innovativeness, and understanding the local factors associated with these firms’ emergence is important for stimulating regional economic growth and innovation. We draw on the knowledge spillover theory of entrepreneurship to motivate our regression model, and augment this theory with additional regional features that have been found to be important in the firm location literature. Zero-inflated negative binomial regressions indicate that these firms exist in counties with larger average establishment size, higher educational attainment and more natural amenities. Income growth, a mix of higher paying industries, and more banks per capita are associated with a smaller presence of these types of firms, all else equal. We conclude that the local conditions favouring high-growth firms are likely to be different from those favouring new firms in general, and that these conditions differ significantly in urban and rural areas and by industrial sectors.  相似文献

Expenditures on a public institution represent not only a cost to the taxpayer but an economic benefit to the region in which it is located. The economic impact on a region's income is here calculated through an econometric model and associated multipliers. The impact on government income tax recepits is similarly calculated. The tax revenues are also used in determining the net cost of operation of the institution. These calculations are performed for the expenditures associated with the new State University Hospital at Stony Brook, N.Y. located in the region formed by Nassau and Suffolk Countries. This paper examines why postgraduate students in the UK decide to take up a further degree, the factors influencing their choice of programme and institution and the sources of information consulted. The study is based on a literature review, other sources of information and primary research with students at one institution. Based on responses from 102 current students the analysis reveals that improvement of career prospects was the prime motivator for studying a postgraduate qualification, allied to a desire to gain or update skills to become more employable. Students also chose to study for their own personal satisfaction. For the university in question, accreditation of some programmes was a deciding factor influencing their choice of institution. The reputation of the university and its location were also important. Various sources of information were referred to but the use of faculty and tutors as ‘salespeople’ had significant impact. This study models the market for business school deans as an outcome of a differential game between a university's central administration and the job candidates in the market for business school deans. In our model, the ability of a business school dean to advance the organization is enhanced by his or her own scholarly reputation, such that a job candidate chooses an optimal level of scholarship that relates to his or her marketability. In this way, the supply of scholarship (by job candidates) can be seen as the supply of job candidates in the market for business school deans, whereas the demand for scholarship can be seen as the demand for business school deans. The main features of our game‐theoretic model are tested using data from both national and regional business schools and colleges in the U.S. Econometric results indicate that each additional scholarly contribution by a business school dean generates a wage premium ranging from $1,000 to $1,200, whereas in the case of national institutions, each additional student enrolled at the doctoral (master's) level raises the wage by $671 ($56). Lastly, the production of between nine and 10 scholarly contributions is found to be necessary in order to face a 50% probability of holding a business school deanship at a national institution, whereas production of about 37 scholarly contributions leads to a 50% probability of holding a deanship with a named business school at a national institution.  相似文献
