For a balanced two-way mixed model, the maximum likelihood (ML) and restricted ML (REML) estimators of the variance components were obtained and compared under the non-negativity requirements of the variance components by L ee and K apadia (1984). In this note, for a mixed (random blocks) incomplete block model, explicit forms for the REML estimators of variance components are obtained. They are always non-negative and have smaller mean squared error (MSE) than the analysis of variance (AOV) estimators. The asymptotic sampling variances of the maximum likelihood (ML) estimators and the REML estimators are compared and the balanced incomplete block design (BIBD) is considered as a special case. The ML estimators are shown to have smaller asymptotic variances than the REML estimators, but a numerical result in the randomized complete block design (RCBD) demonstrated that the performances of the REML and ML estimators are not much different in the MSE sense.  相似文献

Johansen's reduced‐rank maximum likelihood (ML) estimator for cointegration parameters in vector error correction models is known to produce occasional extreme outliers. Using a small monetary system and German data we illustrate the practical importance of this problem. We also consider an alternative generalized least squares (GLS) system estimator which has better properties in this respect. The two estimators are compared in a small simulation study. It is found that the GLS estimator can indeed be an attractive alternative to ML estimation of cointegration parameters.  相似文献

This paper studies semiparametric maximum likelihood estimators in the Cox proportional hazards model with covariate error, assuming that the conditional distribution of the true covariate given the surrogate is known. We show that the estimator of the regression coefficient is asymptotically normal and efficient, its covariance matrix can be estimated consistently by differentiation of the profile likelihood, and the likelihood ratio test is asymptotically chi-squared. We also provide efficient algorithms for the computations of the semiparametric maximum likelihood estimate and the profile likelihood. The performance of this method is successfully demonstrated in simulation studies.  相似文献

We propose an easy-to-implement simulated maximum likelihood estimator for dynamic models where no closed-form representation of the likelihood function is available. Our method can handle any simulable model without latent dynamics. Using simulated observations, we nonparametrically estimate the unknown density by kernel methods, and then construct a likelihood function that can be maximized. We prove that this nonparametric simulated maximum likelihood (NPSML) estimator is consistent and asymptotically efficient. The higher-order impact of simulations and kernel smoothing on the resulting estimator is also analyzed; in particular, it is shown that the NPSML does not suffer from the usual curse of dimensionality associated with kernel estimators. A simulation study shows good performance of the method when employed in the estimation of jump-diffusion models.  相似文献

Joint two-step estimation procedures which have the same asymptotic properties as the maximum likelihood (ML) estimator are developed for the final equation, transfer function and structural form of a multivariate dynamic model with normally distributed vector-moving average errors. The ML estimator under fixed and known initial values is obtained by iterating the procedure until convergence. The asymptotic distribution of the two-step estimators is used to construct large sample testing procedures for the different forms of the model.  相似文献

In this paper, we construct a new class of estimators for conditional quantiles in possibly misspecified nonlinear models with time series data. Proposed estimators belong to the family of quasi-maximum likelihood estimators (QMLEs) and are based on a new family of densities which we call ‘tick-exponential’. A well-known member of the tick-exponential family is the asymmetric Laplace density, and the corresponding QMLE reduces to the Koenker and Bassett's (Econometrica 46 (1978) 33) nonlinear quantile regression estimator. We derive primitive conditions under which the tick-exponential QMLEs are consistent and asymptotically normally distributed with an asymptotic covariance matrix that accounts for possible conditional quantile model misspecification and which can be consistently estimated by using the tick-exponential scores and Hessian matrix. Despite its non-differentiability, the tick-exponential quasi-likelihood is easy to maximize by using a ‘minimax’ representation not seen in the earlier work on conditional quantile estimation.  相似文献

Several limited-information type estimators of the nonlinear simultaneous equation model are considered and their asymptotic covariance matrices are compared. Amemiya (1974) proposed the general class of nonlinear two-stage least-squares estimators. In this paper, its two specific members are considered and, in addition, the nonlinear limited-information maximum- likelihood estimator and the modified nonlinear two-stage least-squares estimator are proposed. Both are shown to be asymptotically more efficient than the nonlinear two-stage least-squares estimator, and the second has the advantage of being computationally simple.  相似文献

The availability of a stochastic repairable system depends on the failure behaviour and on repair strategies. In this paper, we deal with a general repair model for a system using auxiliary counting processes and corresponding intensities which include various degrees of repair (between minimal repair and perfect repair). For determining the model parameters we need estimators depending on failure times and repair times: maximum likelihood (ML) estimator and Bayes estimators are considered. Special results are obtained by the use of Weibull-type intensities and random observation times.  相似文献

In a seminal paper, Mak, Journal of the Royal Statistical Society B, 55, 1993, 945, derived an efficient algorithm for solving non‐linear unbiased estimation equations. In this paper, we show that when Mak's algorithm is applied to biased estimation equations, it results in the estimates that would come from solving a bias‐corrected estimation equation, making it a consistent estimator if regularity conditions hold. In addition, the properties that Mak established for his algorithm also apply in the case of biased estimation equations but for estimates from the bias‐corrected equations. The marginal likelihood estimator is obtained when the approach is applied to both maximum likelihood and least squares estimation of the covariance matrix parameters in the general linear regression model. The new approach results in two new estimators when applied to the profile and marginal likelihood functions for estimating the lagged dependent variable coefficient in the dynamic linear regression model. Monte Carlo simulation results show the new approach leads to a better estimator when applied to the standard profile likelihood. It is therefore recommended for situations in which standard estimators are known to be biased.  相似文献

Suppose independent random samples are drawn from k (2) populations with a common location parameter and unequal scale parameters. We consider the problem of estimating simultaneously the hazard rates of these populations. The analogues of the maximum likelihood (ML), uniformly minimum variance unbiased (UMVU) and the best scale equivariant (BSE) estimators for the one population case are improved using Rao‐Blackwellization. The improved version of the BSE estimator is shown to be the best among these estimators. Finally, a class of estimators that dominates this improved estimator is obtained using the differential inequality approach.  相似文献

Two classes of semiparametric diffusion models are considered, where either the drift or the diffusion term is parameterized, while the other term is left unspecified. We propose a pseudo-maximum likelihood estimator (PMLE) of the parametric component that maximizes the likelihood with a preliminary estimator of the unspecified term plugged in. It is demonstrated how models and estimators can be used in a two-step specification testing strategy of semiparametric and fully parametric models, and shown that approximate/simulated versions of the PMLE inherit the properties of the actual but infeasible estimator. A simulation study investigates the finite sample performance of the PMLE.  相似文献

On the analysis of multivariate growth curves   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Growth curve data arise when repeated measurements are observed on a number of individuals with an ordered dimension for occasions. Such data appear frequently in almost all fields in which statistical models are used, for instance in medicine, agriculture and engineering. In medicine, for example, more than one variable is often measured on each occasion. However, analyses are usually based on exploration of repeated measurements of only one variable. The consequence is that the information contained in the between-variables correlation structure will be discarded.  In this study we propose a multivariate model based on the random coefficient regression model for the analysis of growth curve data. Closed-form expressions for the model parameters are derived under the maximum likelihood (ML) and the restricted maximum likelihood (REML) framework. It is shown that in certain situations estimated variances of growth curve parameters are greater for REML. Also a method is proposed for testing general linear hypotheses. One numerical example is provided to illustrate the methods discussed. Received: 22 February 1999  相似文献

GMM and 2SLS estimation of mixed regressive, spatial autoregressive models   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
The GMM method and the classical 2SLS method are considered for the estimation of mixed regressive, spatial autoregressive models. These methods have computational advantage over the conventional maximum likelihood method. The proposed GMM estimators are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal. Within certain classes of GMM estimators, best ones are derived. The proposed GMM estimators improve upon the 2SLS estimators and are applicable even if all regressors are irrelevant. A best GMM estimator may have the same limiting distribution as the ML estimator (with normal disturbances).  相似文献

Certain exact finite-sample invariance results are established for the usual estimators and test statistics in the generalized regression model with non-scalar covariance matrix. By inferring properties of an estimator from the criterion function which defines it, results can be obtained even when there is no explicit solution for the estimator as a function of the data (as, e.g., with maximum likelihood). Applications are illustrated by an examination of some recently published Monte Carlo simulation studies.  相似文献

This paper analyzes spatial Probit models for cross sectional dependent data in a binary choice context. Observations are divided by pairwise groups and bivariate normal distributions are specified within each group. Partial maximum likelihood estimators are introduced and they are shown to be consistent and asymptotically normal under some regularity conditions. Consistent covariance matrix estimators are also provided. Estimates of average partial effects can also be obtained once we characterize the conditional distribution of the latent error. Finally, a simulation study shows the advantages of our new estimation procedure in this setting. Our proposed partial maximum likelihood estimators are shown to be more efficient than the generalized method of moments counterparts.  相似文献

The generalized maximum likelihood estimator (GMLE) is derived and some of its variants are compared with the partial Abdushukurov-Cheng-Lin (PACL) and Kaplan-Meier (KM) estimators under the proportional hazards model with partially informative censoring. A comparison of small sample properties is conducted based on a simulation study. The results show that the GMLEs perform competitively with the PACL estimator.Acknowledgements.The authors are very much thankful to the referee for perceptive and illuminating comments. This paper proposes an alternative to maximum likelihood estimation of the parameters of the censored regression (or censored ‘Tobit’) model. The proposed estimator is a generalization of least absolute deviations estimation for the standard linear model, and, unlike estimation methods based on the assumption of normally distributed error terms, the estimator is consistent and asymptotically normal for a wide class of error distributions, and is also robust to heteroscedasticity. The paper gives the regularity conditions and proofs of these large-sample results, and proposes classes of consistent estimators of the asymptotic covariance matrix for both homoscedastic and heteroscedastic disturbances.  相似文献

We analyze optimality properties of maximum likelihood (ML) and other estimators when the problem does not necessarily fall within the locally asymptotically normal (LAN) class, therefore covering cases that are excluded from conventional LAN theory such as unit root nonstationary time series. The classical Hájek–Le Cam optimality theory is adapted to cover this situation. We show that the expectation of certain monotone “bowl-shaped” functions of the squared estimation error are minimized by the ML estimator in locally asymptotically quadratic situations, which often occur in nonstationary time series analysis when the LAN property fails. Moreover, we demonstrate a direct connection between the (Bayesian property of) asymptotic normality of the posterior and the classical optimality properties of ML estimators.  相似文献

Growing-dimensional data with likelihood function unavailable are often encountered in various fields. This paper presents a penalized exponentially tilted (PET) likelihood for variable selection and parameter estimation for growing dimensional unconditional moment models in the presence of correlation among variables and model misspecification. Under some regularity conditions, we investigate the consistent and oracle properties of the PET estimators of parameters, and show that the constrained PET likelihood ratio statistic for testing contrast hypothesis asymptotically follows the chi-squared distribution. Theoretical results reveal that the PET likelihood approach is robust to model misspecification. We study high-order asymptotic properties of the proposed PET estimators. Simulation studies are conducted to investigate the finite performance of the proposed methodologies. An example from the Boston Housing Study is illustrated.  相似文献

The common principal components model for several groups of multivariate observations is a useful parsimonious model for the scatter structure which assumes equal principal axes but different variances along those axes for each group. Due to the lack of resistance of the classical maximum likelihood estimators for the parameters of this model, several robust estimators have been proposed in the literature: plug-in estimators and projection-pursuit (PP) type estimators. In this paper, we show that it is possible to improve the low efficiency of the projection-pursuit estimators by applying a reweighting step. More precisely, we consider plug-in estimators obtained by plugging a reweighted estimator of the scatter matrices into the maximum likelihood equations defining the principal axes. The weights considered penalize observations with large values of the influence measures defined by Boente et al. (2002). The new estimators are studied in terms of theoretical properties (influence functions and asymptotic variances) and are compared with other existing estimators in a simulation study.  相似文献
