This paper investigates operational hedging against severe disruptions to normal operations. It offers a new method to evaluate the extent that operations policy serves as a hedge against adverse circumstances. We apply the proposed method to explore how supply chain characteristics affect the responses of airlines to the acute demand fall off after the September 11 terrorist attacks. Results indicate that operational hedging vehicles (fleet standardization, high-fleet utilization, an aircraft ownership policy rather than leasing, and international operations) are more powerful in protecting firms than using financial instruments. The study contributes in guiding managers as to how operations policy can serve as an imperative factor in mitigating exposures to low-end performance levels. 相似文献

The operational competitiveness of a production unit (PU) where resources are transformed into outputs of goods and services is a very important component of its overall competitiveness. A PU's operations are comprised of a number of purposeful activities that consume resources and generate rewards. The efficiency with which these activities are carried out determines the PU's operational competitiveness. A reliable rating system is prerequisite in order to control and improve operational competitiveness. In the present paper we adopt a multi-activity view of the concept of operational competitiveness and develop a procedure to calculate ratings to help gauge the relative operational competitiveness of a set of PUs. The procedure is based on a nonparametric model but its implementation involves simple ratio-type computations. The principal criteria for the procedure and the ratings resulting from its application are intuitive appeal, transparency, ease of computation, robustness and ability to reflect the prevailing managerial perspectives and competitive priorities. We demonstrate the application of the procedure to gauge the relative operational competitiveness of a major chartered bank's branch personnel. 相似文献

The Advanced Measurement Approach (AMA) to operational risk, as described by the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision ( 2011 ), provides a framework meant to be used by banks for establishing the capital required to be set aside to cover worst‐case operational loss scenarios. The problems raised by an AMA approach are primarily statistical in nature, and many lie at the frontier of statistical research. The aim of this paper is to contribute to one of the more pressing challenges of an AMA, namely that of testing the goodness of fit (GoF) of a distributional family to operational loss data. Our focus is on extending certain classically known tests, such as that of Anderson–Darling, with particular emphasis on the right tails of the distributions. The nature of such GoF tests is examined in detail, and computational efficiency of the procedures is taken into account. We also propose a novel saddlepoint approximation method for assessing the asymptotic null distributions of the test statistics based on the eigenvalues of covariance kernels estimated via a jackknife and influence function‐based approach. 相似文献
