A class of flat prior distributions for the Poisson‐gamma hierarchical model

A wide class of prior distributions for the Poisson‐gamma hierarchical model is proposed. Prior distributions in this class carry vague information in the sense that their tails exhibit slow decay. Conditions for the propriety of the resulting posterior density are determined, as well as for the existence of posterior moments of the Poisson rate of either an observed or an unobserved unit.     

Work life balance and the retention of managers in Spanish SMEs

Executives in today's business world are increasingly conscious that the competitive advantage of companies rests upon the retention of their key employees. According to the literature, dissatisfaction with the job is an important determinant of turnover rates and work life balance (WLB) initiatives are today considered to be an important antecedent of job satisfaction. This study explores these relationships in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), where a number of academics have suggested that research is necessary. This paper presents an empirical research study with a sample of 149 managers of Spanish SMEs. The findings show that the existence of a WLB culture rather than the availability of WLB practices offered by the company is the main determinant of job satisfaction. There is also strong evidence that job satisfaction is a good predictor of turnover intentions. Based on the findings, the paper argues that informal support for WLB, expressed through the existence of positive and supportive organizational values for WLB, plays a major role in enhancing organizational outcomes such as job satisfaction among managers and their retention in SMEs. The implications for practitioners and academics are also discussed.

An existence theorem of intertemporal recursive utility in the presence of Lévy jumps

This paper presents an existence theorem for a class of backward stochastic integral equations. The main contribution is a generalization of Duffie and Epstein's [Duffie, D., Epstein, L., 1992. Stochastic differential utility, (Appendix C with Skiadas C.), Econometrica 60, 353–394.] existence theorem of intertemporal recursive utility to allow the information structure to be driven by a Lévy jump process. The existence theorem applies also for a more general class of utility functions, such as recursive utility with habit-formation, and can be used to prove the existence of an equilibrium asset price process as a unique solution to the stochastic Euler equation derived by Ma [Ma, C., 1993b. Valuation of Derivative Securities with Mixed Poisson–Brownian Information and Recursive Utility, McGill University, mimeo.].     

Existence of a competitive equilibrium in the Lucas (1988) model without physical capital

This paper considers an endogenous growth model with human capital accumulation. It gives sufficient conditions and a necessary condition for the existence of a unique competitive equilibrium with externalities. These conditions are more stringent than those which prevail for the existence of an equilibrium defined as the solution to a fixed-point problem.     

Price rigidity: An exploration of the demand side

This paper presents an exploration of the demand-side effects of unanticipated price changes. Consumers faced with these changes may have to reoptimize their income allocation. Reoptimization is costly, and reoptimization costs result in kinked demand curves. The existence of such kinked demands provides an additional explanation of the observed nominal price rigidity. In addition, examination of unexpected nominal price changes during inflationary periods provides some justification as to why nominal price adjustments are large, infrequent and almost never downward.     

Equilibrium with coordination

The obvious equilibrium concepts in the simplest institutions for transferring ownership of commodities—bilateral exchange—are neither Nash equilibria nor cooperative equilibria. To study such equilibria as special cases of equilibria of a social system it is necessary to introduce coordination. Two or more agents coordinate their actions, if, when they consider an alternative to a state, they take as given—for agents with whom they coordinate—the alternative state. If there is no coordination we obtain Nash equilibrium as a special case. If there is complete coordination we obtain optimality as a special case. The main result is an existence theorem for a social system with coordination. This theorem is then applied to prove existence of exchange equilibria in an economy with bilateral exchange.     

Theoretical analysis and empirical measurements of the effects of the Philadelphia income tax

This study develops policy-oriented measures of optimal local taxes and their maxima which take into account the existence of macro multipliers, other taxes, and discounting. It also presents an estimate of the effects of the Philadelphia income tax on employment tax and revenues. An upper bound for the optimal tax rate is suggested. The current tax rate is found to perhaps be above both the optimal and the revenue maximizing (or monopoly) point.     

Zoning and the exercise of monopoly power: A reevaluation

One reason for excessive zoning restrictions is said to be the desire of existing residents to raise the value of their homes. This strategy will be more successful if their community controls a large fraction of the land in a metropolitan area. This study critically examines this “monopoly zoning” hypothesis in a property rights framework. A re-examination of current empirical evidence for monopoly zoning and an additional study cast some doubt on the existence of such motivations.     

Existence of equilibrium actions and of equilibrium : A note on the ‘new’ existence theorems

A lemma by Ky Fan, which asserts the existence of a maximal element relative to some ordering (an equilibrium action) in a compact choice set, is extended to a larger class of orderings. This extension allows one to generalize slightly several existence theorems and seems to be useful for the applications. Kakutani's fixed-point theorem and the existence of an equilibrium in a generalized game are used to exemplify this. In the last case the method of proof may be of some independent interest involving, as it does, the reduction of an n-person game to a corresponding 1-person game.
