In this paper, we develop two cointegration tests for two varying coefficient cointegration regression models, respectively. Our test statistics are residual based. We derive the asymptotic distributions of test statistics under the null hypothesis of cointegration and show that they are consistent against the alternative hypotheses. We also propose a wild bootstrap procedure companioned with the continuous moving block bootstrap method proposed in  Paparoditis and Politis (2001) and  Phillips (2010) to rectify severe distortions found in simulations when the sample size is small. We apply the proposed test statistic to examine the purchasing power parity (PPP) hypothesis between the US and Canada. In contrast to the existing results from linear cointegration tests, our varying coefficient cointegration test does not reject that PPP holds between the US and Canada.  相似文献

We develop a sequence of tests for specifying the cointegrating rank of, possibly fractional, multiple time series. Memory parameters of observables are treated as unknown, as are those of possible cointegrating errors. The individual test statistics have standard null asymptotics and are related to Hausman specification test statistics: when the memory parameter is common to several series, an estimate of this parameter based on the assumption of no cointegration achieves an efficiency improvement over estimates based on individual series, whereas if the series are cointegrated the former estimate is generally inconsistent. However, a computationally simpler but asymptotically equivalent approach, which avoids explicit computation of the “efficient” estimate, is instead pursued here. Two versions of it are initially proposed, followed by one that robustifies to possible inequality between memory parameters of observables. Throughout, a semiparametric approach is pursued, modelling serial dependence only at frequencies near the origin, with the goal of validity under broad circumstances and computational convenience. The main development is in terms of stationary series, but an extension to non-stationary ones is also described. The algorithm for estimating cointegrating rank entails carrying out such tests based on potentially all subsets of two or more of the series, though outcomes of previous tests may render some or all subsequent ones unnecessary. A Monte Carlo study of finite sample performance is included.  相似文献

This paper considers alternative methods of testing cointegration in fractionally integrated processes, using the bootstrap. The investigation focuses on (a) choice of statistic, (b) use of bias correction techniques, and (c) designing the simulation of the null hypothesis. Three residual-based tests are considered, two of the null hypothesis of non-cointegration, the third of the null hypothesis that cointegration exists. The tests are compared in Monte Carlo experiments to throw light on the relative roles of issues (a)–(c) in test performance.  相似文献

In the paper, we propose residual based tests for cointegration in general panels with cross-sectional dependency, endogeneity and various heterogeneities. The residuals are obtained from the usual least squares estimation of the postulated cointegrating relationships from each individual unit, and the nonlinear IV panel unit root testing procedure is applied to the panels of the fitted residuals using as instruments the nonlinear transformations of the adaptively   fitted lagged residuals. The tt-ratio, based on the nonlinear IV estimator, is then constructed to test for unit root in the fitted residuals for each cross-section. We show that such nonlinear IV tt-ratios are asymptotically normal and cross-sectionally independent under the null hypothesis of no cointegration. The average or the minimum of the IVtt-ratios can, therefore, be used to test for the null of a fully non-cointegrated panel against the alternative of a mixed panel, i.e., a panel with only some cointegrated units. We also consider the maximum of the IV tt-ratios to test for a mixed panel against a fully cointegrated panel. The critical values of the minimum, maximum as well as the average tests are easily obtained from the standard normal distribution function. Our simulation results indicate that the residual based tests for cointegration perform quite well in finite samples.  相似文献

We develop a test for the linear no cointegration null hypothesis in a threshold vector error correction model. We adopt a sup-Wald type test and derive its null asymptotic distribution. A residual-based bootstrap is proposed, and the first-order consistency of the bootstrap is established. A set of Monte Carlo simulations shows that the bootstrap corrects size distortion of asymptotic distribution in finite samples, and that its power against the threshold cointegration alternative is significantly greater than that of conventional cointegration tests. Our method is illustrated with used car price indexes.  相似文献

This paper illustrates that, under the null hypothesis of no cointegration, the correlation of p‐values from a single‐equation residual‐based test (i.e., ADF or ) with a system‐based test (trace or maximum eigenvalue) is very low even as the sample size gets large. With data‐generating processes under the null or ‘near’ it, the two types of tests can yield virtually any combination of p‐values regardless of sample size. As a practical matter, we also conduct tests for cointegration on 132 data sets from 34 studies appearing in this Journal and find substantial differences in p‐values for the same data set. In this paper, we consider bootstrapping cointegrating regressions. It is shown that the method of bootstrap, if properly implemented, generally yields consistent estimators and test statistics for cointegrating regressions. For the cointegrating regression models driven by general linear processes, we employ the sieve bootstrap based on the approximated finite-order vector autoregressions for the regression errors and the first differences of the regressors. In particular, we establish the bootstrap consistency for OLS method. The bootstrap method can thus be used to correct for the finite sample bias of the OLS estimator and to approximate the asymptotic critical values of the OLS-based test statistics in general cointegrating regressions. The bootstrap OLS procedure, however, is not efficient. For the efficient estimation and hypothesis testing, we consider the procedure proposed by Saikkonen [1991. Asymptotically efficient estimation of cointegration regressions. Econometric Theory 7, 1–21] and Stock and Watson [1993. A simple estimator of cointegrating vectors in higher order integrating systems. Econometrica 61, 783–820] relying on the regression augmented with the leads and lags of differenced regressors. The bootstrap versions of their procedures are shown to be consistent, and can be used to do asymptotically valid inferences. A Monte Carlo study is conducted to investigate the finite sample performances of the proposed bootstrap methods.  相似文献

Standard inference in cointegrating models is fragile because it relies on an assumption of an I(1)I(1) model for the common stochastic trends, which may not accurately describe the data’s persistence. This paper considers low-frequency tests about cointegrating vectors under a range of restrictions on the common stochastic trends. We quantify how much power can potentially be gained by exploiting correct restrictions, as well as the magnitude of size distortions if such restrictions are imposed erroneously. A simple test motivated by the analysis in Wright (2000) is developed and shown to be approximately optimal for inference about a single cointegrating vector in the unrestricted stochastic trend model.  相似文献

A parametric test for r versus r−1 cointegrating vectors is developed. The test exploits the fact that in a system of n I(1) variates the rth principal component is I(0) under the null but I(1) under the alternative. The statistic is parametric, is constructed using simple regression methods applied to principal components, follows a standard χ2 distribution and does not require normalisation restrictions on the cointegrating vectors. A Monte Carlo investigation indicates that providing the lag length in the pre-whitening procedure is chosen by means of nested significance tests, the test has good size and power properties in small samples.  相似文献

This paper examines a two-regime vector error-correction model with a single cointegrating vector and a threshold effect in the error-correction term. We propose a relatively simple algorithm to obtain maximum likelihood estimation of the complete threshold cointegration model for the bivariate case. We propose a SupLM test for the presence of a threshold. We derive the null asymptotic distribution, show how to simulate asymptotic critical values, and present a bootstrap approximation. We investigate the performance of the test using Monte Carlo simulation, and find that the test works quite well. Applying our methods to the term structure model of interest rates, we find strong evidence for a threshold effect.  相似文献

For univariate time series we suggest a new variant of efficient score tests against fractional alternatives. This test has three important merits. First, by means of simulations we observe that it is superior in terms of size and power in some situations of practical interest. Second, it is easily understood and implemented as a slight modification of the Dickey–Fuller test, although our score test has a limiting normal distribution. Third and most important, our test generalizes to multivariate cointegration tests just as the Dickey–Fuller test does. Thus it allows to determine the cointegration rank of fractionally integrated time series. It does so by solving a generalized eigenvalue problem of the type proposed by Johansen (J. Econ. Dyn. Control 12 (1988) 231). However, the limiting distribution of the corresponding trace statistic is χ2, where the degrees of freedom depend only on the cointegration rank under the null hypothesis. The usefulness of the asymptotic theory for finite samples is established in a Monte Carlo experiment.  相似文献

We analyze the asymptotic distributions associated with the seasonal unit root tests of Hylleberg et al. (1990) for quarterly data when the innovations follow a moving average process. Although both the t‐ and F‐type tests suffer from scale and shift effects compared with the presumed null distributions when a fixed order of autoregressive augmentation is applied, these effects disappear when the order of augmentation is sufficiently large. However, as found by Burridge and Taylor (2001) for the autoregressive case, individual t‐ratio tests at the semi‐annual frequency are not pivotal even with high orders of augmentation, although the corresponding joint F‐type statistic is pivotal. Monte Carlo simulations verify the importance of the order of augmentation for finite samples generated by seasonally integrated moving average processes.  相似文献

This paper studies estimation and inference of functional coefficient cointegration models. The proposed model offers a more flexible structure of cointegration where the value of cointegrating coefficients may be affected by informative covariates and thus may vary over time. The model may be viewed as a stochastic cointegration model and includes the conventional cointegration model as a special case. The proposed new model provides a useful complement to the conventional fixed coefficient cointegration models. Both kernel and local polynomial estimators are investigated. Inference procedures for instability of cointegrating parameters and a test for cointegration are proposed based on the functional-coefficient estimates. Limiting distributions of the estimates and testing statistics are derived.  相似文献

This paper considers the estimation of a stochastically cointegrating regression within the stochastic cointegration modelling framework introduced in McCabe et al. (Stochastic cointegration: testing, 2001). A stochastic cointegrating regression allows some or all of the variables to be conventionally or heteroscedastically integrated. This generalizes Hansen's (J. Econom. 54 (1992) 139) heteroscedastic cointegrating regression model, where the dependent variable is heteroscedastically integrated, but all the regressor variables are restricted to being conventionally integrated. In contrast to conventional and heteroscedastic cointegrating regression, ordinary least-squares (OLS) estimation is shown to be inconsistent, in general, in a stochastically cointegrating regression. As a solution, a new instrumental variables (IVs) estimator is proposed and is shown to be consistent. Under a suitable exogeneity assumption, standard asymptotic inference on the stochastic cointegrating vector can be carried out based on the IV estimator. The finite sample properties of the test statistics, including their robustness to the exogeneity assumption, are examined by simulation.  相似文献

This paper introduces tests for residual serial correlation in cointegrating regressions. The tests are devised in the frequency domain by using the spectral measure estimates. The asymptotic distributions of the tests are derived and test consistency is established. The asymptotic distributions are obtained by using the assumptions and methods that are different from those used in Grenander and Rosenblatt (1957) and Durlauf (1991). Small-scale simulation results are reported to illustrate the finite sample performance of the tests under various distributional assumptions on the data generating process. The distributions considered are normal and t-distributions. The tests are shown to have stable size at sample sizes as large as 50 or 100. Additionally, it is shown that the tests are reasonably powerful against the ARMA residuals. An empirical application of the tests to investigate the ‘weak-form’ efficiency in the foreign exchange market is also reported.  相似文献

A vector autoregressive model for I(2) processes which allows for trend-stationary components and restricts the deterministic part of the process to be at most linear is defined. A two-step statistical analysis of the model is derived. The joint test of I(1) and I(2) cointegrating ranks is shown to be asymptotically similar with respect to the drift terms and the asymptotic distribution is tabulated. The cointegrating parameters are shown to be mixed Gaussian and an application for UK monetary data illustrates the proposed analysis.  相似文献

The bootstrap discrepancy measures the difference in rejection probabilities between a bootstrap test and one based on the true distribution. The order of magnitude of the bootstrap discrepancy is the same under the null hypothesis and under non-null processes described by Pitman drift. If the test statistic is not an exact pivot, critical values depend on which data-generating process (DGP) is used to determine the null distribution. We propose using the DGP which minimizes the bootstrap discrepancy. We also show that, under an asymptotic independence condition, the power of both bootstrap and asymptotic tests can be estimated cheaply by simulation.  相似文献

In this paper we propose a nonparametric kernel-based model specification test that can be used when the regression model contains both discrete and continuous regressors. We employ discrete variable kernel functions and we smooth both the discrete and continuous regressors using least squares cross-validation (CV) methods. The test statistic is shown to have an asymptotic normal null distribution. We also prove the validity of using the wild bootstrap method to approximate the null distribution of the test statistic, the bootstrap being our preferred method for obtaining the null distribution in practice. Simulations show that the proposed test has significant power advantages over conventional kernel tests which rely upon frequency-based nonparametric estimators that require sample splitting to handle the presence of discrete regressors.  相似文献

This paper develops new methods for determining the cointegration rank in a nonstationary fractionally integrated system, extending univariate optimal methods for testing the degree of integration. We propose a simple Wald test based on the singular value decomposition of the unrestricted estimate of the long run multiplier matrix. When the “strength” of the cointegrating relationship is less than 1/2, the test statistic has a standard asymptotic distribution, like Lagrange Multiplier tests exploiting local properties. We consider the behavior of our test under estimation of short run parameters and local alternatives. We compare our procedure with other cointegration tests based on different principles and find that the new method has better properties in a range of situations by using information on the alternative obtained through a preliminary estimate of the cointegration strength.  相似文献
