This paper continues a study of theories of preferences under risk that do not use the independence axiom of the von Neumann-Morgenstern theory. Unlike its predecessor, it assumes that preferences are transitive. The effects of transitivity are noted in two representations of preferences. The first, which also uses continuity and dominance axioms, involves a function u on a set P of probability measures for which u(p) > u(q) if and only if p is preferred to q. Although u might be nonlinear, it has other features of a von Neumann-Morgenstern linear utility function. The second representation has linear functions u and w on P, with w strictly positive except perhaps at preference-extreme measures—where it might vanish, such that u(p) w(q) > u(q) w(p) if and only if p is preferred to q. A symmetry axiom along with the axioms for the first representation are necessary and sufficient for the second representation.  相似文献

Consider a simple structural break model where yt=α1+β1f(xt)+ut for tk0 and yt=α2+β2f(xt)+ut for t>k0. The timing of break and the structural parameters are unknown. Suppose the true functional form of the regressor f(·) is misspecified as g(·). We do not place too many restrictions on the functional forms of f(·) and g(·). A frequently encountered example in economics is that the true model is measured in level, but we estimate a log-linear model, i.e. when f(xt)=xt and g(xt)=log(xt) For any f(·) and g(·), we derive a nonstandard limiting null distribution of the sup-Wald test statistic under some very general regularity conditions. Monte Carlo simulations support our findings.  相似文献

The extension is concerned with non-linear mappings A(·) which map the space of n-vectors of total gross outputs into the space of n-vectors of final demands. Roughly speaking, it is shown that, if throughout the non-negative orthant the Jacobian matrix of A(·) is of the Leontief type and satisfies the Hawkins-Simon condition, and if A(·) satisfies a certain other condition, then propositions of a global nature entirely analogous to the Le Chatelier-Samuelson Principle in both the weak and strong forms for linear Leontief systems are valid for A(·).  相似文献

A proportional income tax is said to be neutral if variations in the tax rate do not affect the optimal composition of the consumption commodities of a utility maximizing consumer. It is shown that neutrality obtains if and only if the indirect utility function of the consumer is groupwise homothetic. If the income tax rates on labor and property incomes are allowed to differ, then neutrality obtains if and only if the indirect utility function of the consumer is homothetically separable. If, in addition, it is required that the proportional income tax be neutral with respect to not only consumption commodities but also to leisure, then 'the indirect utility function must have the form: V = V(f(w)+H1(p)), where w and p are the normalized prices of leisure and consumption respectively, and H1(p) is homogeneous of degree one in p.  相似文献

This paper extends a result of Sakai, who presented conditions for indirect preferences from which a utility function can be deduced if demand is single valued. It will be shown that—adding a “partial Lipschitz condition”—Sakai's theorem can be extended to multi-valued demand. Our result follows from the extension of a theorem of Hurwicz and Richter, who have shown that, under certain hypotheses on demand correspondences, an upper semicontinuous utility function f exists, so that the set of utility maximal elements μf(B) is contained in the choice set h(B) for every budget B. By our partial Lipschitz condition h(B) ?- μf(B) also follows.  相似文献

By an application of sufficient conditions, assume that an optimal pair (χτ(·), uτ(·)) and an adjoint function pτ(·) were found in the control problem in question with the final time τ fixed but arbitrary. Then a sufficient condition for one of these pairs, say χτ1(·), uτ1(·) to be optimal in the corresponding free final time problem is that the Hamiltonian, with (χτ(t), uτ(τ?), pτ(τ), τ) inserted, is nonnegative (nonpositive) to the left (right) of τ1.  相似文献

We study a class of utility functions that are defined recursively by an aggregator W(x,y) where ut=W(ct,ut+1). In single-agent economies it is known that a sufficient condition for the existence of a balanced growth path is that utility should be homogenous of degree γ. In the context of a multi-agent economy we show that this restriction implies that either a balanced growth equilibrium fails to exist or all agents have the same constant discount factor. We suggest a generalization of recursive preferences wherein the intertemporal utility function is time dependent. Within this class we establish that there may exist a balanced growth equilibrium even if agents are different.  相似文献

Parikh and Krasucki [R. Parikh, P. Krasucki, Communication, consensus and knowledge, J. Econ. Theory 52 (1990) 178-189] show that, in a group of rational agents, communication of the value of a function f leads to a consensus on the value of f, provided some conditions on the communication protocol and the function f hold. In this article, we address the issue of the influence of the protocol on the outcome of the communication process, when agents value information positively. We show that, if it is common knowledge in a group of agents that some of them disagree on two protocols, then the consensus value of f must be the same for both protocols.  相似文献

A consumer at each period, given the income available, y, has to decide how much to consume and save. If he consumes c ? 0 units he gets u(c) units of satisfaction or utility, and if x = y ? c ? 0 is the amount saved then the available income in the next period is rx + ωk, where ωk is a random variable, and r is an interest factor that is assumed to be known with certainty. Infinite time horizon problems are considered, and it is shown that if 0 < δr < 1, where 0 < δ < 1 is a discount factor, then the limiting policy is optimal. Questions about the behavior of the stock level, such as boundness, are considered, and an example is given that shows that the stock level might converge almost surely to infinity. Finally an economic explanation is given.  相似文献

This paper provides a simple and short proof that the following two properties are equivalent under ▽f(x) ≠ 0: (A) ▽f(x) h = 0 implies hT2f(x) h ? 0 for any x; (B) f(x1) ? f(x0) implies f(tx1 + (1?t)x0) ?f(x0) for 0? t ? 1.  相似文献

We characterize preferences over acts that can be represented by a utility function and a multiple-prior, such that an act f is preferred to act g if there is a prior under which the expected utility induced by f is higher than that induced by g. These preferences are referred to as justifiable preferences. We further introduce a generalized model of ambiguity that involves a collection of multiple-priors, namely, multiple multiple-priors and incorporate Bewley?s Knightian model in justifiability: f is preferred to g if, according to at least one set of priors, f is unanimously preferred to g.  相似文献

In a sequential decision problem at any stage a decision maker, based on the history, takes a decision and receives a payoff which depends also on the realized state of nature. A strategy, f, is said to be as good as an alternative strategy g at a sequence of states, if in the long run f does, on average, at least as well as g does. It is shown that for any distribution, μ, over the alternative strategies there is a strategy f which is, at any sequence of states, as good as μ-almost any alternative g.  相似文献

For portfolio problems with joint normally distributed asset returns, the risk aversion measure R = -w0(Eu″(w)/Eu′(w)), where w0 is initial wealth can be used to characterize optimality. Comparisons between the global measure R and local measures based on RA = -u″(w)/u′(w) are explored. Simulations for several utility function classes are described.  相似文献

Let y be a vector of endogenous variables and let w be a vector of covariates, parameters, and errors or unobservables that together are assumed to determine y. A structural model y=H(y, w) is complete and coherent if it has a well‐defined reduced form, meaning that for any value of w there exists a unique value for y. Coherence and completeness simplifies identification and is required for many estimators and many model applications. Incoherency or incompleteness can arise in models with multiple decision makers, such as games, or when the decision making of individuals is either incorrectly or incompletely specified. This article provides necessary and sufficient conditions for the coherence and completeness of simultaneous equation systems where one equation is a binomial response. Examples are dummy endogenous regressor models, regime switching regressions, treatment response models, sample selection models, endogenous choice systems, and determining if a pair of binary choices are substitutes or complements.  相似文献

We axiomatize, in an Anscombe–Aumann framework, the class of preferences that admit a representation of the form V(f)=μ−ρ(d)V(f)=μρ(d), where μ is the mean utility of the act f with respect to a given probability, d   is the vector of state-by-state utility deviations from the mean, and ρ(d)ρ(d) is a measure of (aversion to) dispersion that corresponds to an uncertainty premium. The key feature of these mean-dispersion   preferences is that they exhibit constant absolute uncertainty aversion. This class includes many well-known models of preferences from the literature on ambiguity. We show what properties of the dispersion function ρ(⋅)ρ() correspond to known models, to probabilistic sophistication, and to some new notions of uncertainty aversion.  相似文献

The square root function has a unique positive fixed point. This function has the following properties: it is strictly increasing and strictly concave, with f(0) = 0, and there are points a ≥ 0 and b ≥ 0 such that f(a) ≥ a and f(b) ≤ b. It is shown that any function from n to n satisfying these properties has a unique positive fixed point. Journal of Economic Literature Classification Number: C62.  相似文献

The (generalized) Gini indices rely on the social welfare function of a decision maker who behaves in accordance with Yaari's model, with a function f that transforms frequencies. This SWF can also be represented as the weighted sum of the welfare of all the possible coalitions in the society, where the welfare of a coalition is defined as the income of the worst-off member of that coalition. We provide a set of axioms (Ak) and prove that the three following statements are equivalent: (i) the decision maker respects (Ak), (ii) f is a polynomial of degree k, (iii) the weight of all coalitions with more than k members is equal to zero. Ki-Jun Jeong (1982) proposed to distinguish between the notion of direct and indirect input requirements to support a unit of final demand (rf) and that to produce a unit of gross output (rg) in the open input-output model. In this note the two notions are related by the relation rf = rgc11, where c11 is direct and indirect output requirements to support a unit of final demand, or c11 = 1 + rf.  相似文献

Problems are studied in which an integral of the form ∫0+∞L(k(t),k(t))e?ptdt is minimized over a class of arcs k: [0, +∞) → Rn. It is assumed that L is a convex function on Rn × Rn and that the discount rate ? is positive. Optimality conditions are expressed in terms of a perturbed Hamiltonian differential system involving a Hamiltonian function H(k, q) which is concave in k and convex in q, but not necessarily differentiable. Conditions are given ensuring that, for ? sufficiently small, the system has a stationary point, in a neighborhood of which one has classical “saddle point” behavior. The optimal arcs of interest then correspond to the solutions of the system which tend to the stationary point as t → +∞. These results are motivated by questions in theoretical economics and extend previous work of the author for the case ? = 0. The case ? < 0 is also covered in part.  相似文献
