This paper employs a semiparametric procedure to estimate the diffusion process of short-term interest rates. The Monte Carlo study shows that the semiparametric approach produces more accurate volatility estimates than models that accommodate asymmetry, level effect and serial dependence in the conditional variance. Moreover, the semiparametric approach yields robust volatility estimates even if the short rate drift function and the underlying innovation distribution are misspecified. Empirical investigation with the U.S. three-month Treasury bill rates suggests that the semiparametric procedure produces superior in-sample and out-of-sample forecast of short rate changes volatility compared with the widely used single-factor diffusion models. This forecast improvement has implications for pricing interest rate derivatives.  相似文献

This paper analyzes an interest rate model with self-exciting jumps, in which a jump in the interest rate model increases the intensity of jumps in the same model. This self-exciting property leads to clustering effects in the interest rate model. We obtain a closed-form expression for the conditional moment-generating function when the model coefficients have affine structures. Based on the Girsanov-type measure transformation for general jump-diffusion processes, we derive the evolution of the interest rate under the equivalent martingale measure and an explicit expression of the zero-coupon bond pricing formula. Furthermore, we give a pricing formula for the European call option written on zero-coupon bonds. Finally, we provide an interpretation for the clustering effects in the interest rate model within a simple framework of general equilibrium. Indeed, we construct an interest rate model, the equilibrium state of which coincides with the interest rate model with clustering effects proposed in this paper.  相似文献

This paper analyzes a class of nonnegative processes for the short-term interest rate. The dynamics of interest rates and yields are driven by the dynamics of the conditional volatility of the pricing kernel. We study Markovian interest rate processes as well as more general non-Markovian processes that display “short” and “long” memory. These processes also display heteroskedasticity patterns that are more general than those of existing models. We find that deviations from the Markovian structure significantly improve the empirical performance of the model. Certain aspects of the long memory effect can be captured with a (less parsimonious) short memory parameterization, but a simulation experiment suggests that the implied term structures corresponding to the estimated long- and short-memory specifications are very different. We also find that the choice of proxy for the short rate affects the estimates of heteroskedasticity patterns.  相似文献

We address a method for pricing electricity contracts based on the valuation of the ability to produce power, which is considered as the true underlying factor for electricity derivatives. This approach shows that an evaluation of free production capacity provides a framework where a change-of-numeraire transformation converts the electricity forward market into the common settings for money market modelling. Using the toolkit of interest rate theory, we derive explicit option pricing formulas.  相似文献

We use a unique dataset to analyze how Italian banking groups managed their exposure to interest rate risk during the recent financial crisis. First of all, we document that on average the interest rate risk exposure – measured by duration gap approach – has been limited and well below the alert level enforced by regulators. Second, our econometric results indicate a relation of substitutability between banks’ on-balance-sheet interest rate risk and their use of interest rate derivatives suggesting that banks used these two instruments to curb their overall interest rate risk exposure in case of an increase in interest rates. Furthermore, we also find robust evidence of a negative correlation between banks’ interest rate risk and liquidity risk.  相似文献

Short selling exchange-traded funds (ETFs) has become a common means of speculating or hedging in response to pessimistic expectations about a specific market or sector, as the short interest of ETFs is more than 10 times that of individual stocks, on average. We determine that sector-based ETFs have an abnormally large short interest level, whereas international ETFs have an unusually small short interest level. The level of short interest is larger for ETFs that have a higher trading volume and a lower market capitalization, regardless of the type of ETF assessed. The level of short interest is lower for ETFs representing indexes that have tradable derivatives, but higher for international ETFs representing indexes that have tradable derivatives. We also determine that the level of short interest in an ETF serves as an effective signal of bearish sentiment when considering all ETFs, but is not an effective signal when isolating any particular type of ETF.

We address three questions relating to the interest rate options market: What is the shape of the smile? What are the economic determinants of the shape of the smile? Do these determinants have predictive power for the future shape of the smile and vice versa? We investigate these issues using daily bid and ask prices of euro (€) interest rate caps/floors. We find a clear smile pattern in interest rate options. The shape of the smile varies over time and is affected in a dynamic manner by yield curve variables and the future uncertainty in the interest rate markets; it also has information about future aggregate default risk. Our findings are useful for the pricing, hedging and risk management of these derivatives.  相似文献

Fixed income options contain substantial information on the price of interest rate volatility risk. In this paper, we ask if those options will also provide information related to other moments of the objective distribution of interest rates. Based on dynamic term structure models within the class of affine models, we find that interest rate options are useful for the identification of interest rate quantiles. Two three-factor models are adopted and their adequacy to estimate Value at Risk of zero-coupon bonds is tested. We find significant difference on the quantitative assessment of risk when options are (or not) included in the estimation process of each of these dynamic models. Statistical backtests indicate that bond estimated risk is clearly more adequate when options are adopted, although not yet completely satisfactory.  相似文献
