In this article, we consider a general class of binomial models with an additional parameter λ. We show that in the case of a European call option the binomial price converges to the Black–Scholes price at the rate 1/n and, more importantly, give a formula for the coefficient of 1/n in the expansion of the error. This enables us, by making special choices for λ, to prove that convergence is smooth in Tian’s flexible binomial model and also in a new center binomial model which we propose. The skew effect in market implied volatility can be reproduced by option pricing theory based on stochastic volatility models for the price of the underlying asset. Here we study the performance of the calibration of the S&P 500 implied volatility surface using the asymptotic pricing theory under fast mean-reverting stochastic volatility described in [8]. The time-variation of the fitted skew-slope parameter shows a periodic behaviour that depends on the option maturity dates in the future, which are known in advance. We model a local public good with spillovers, in a framework where devolution is socially inefficient. Nevertheless, we show that decentralisation may be preferred by one region if it implies a reduction in regional income redistribution. This result is due to the inter-regional mechanism of the equalisation grant. For an expenditure-based grant, we define a threshold for regional income disparity above which decentralisation is preferred, while for a resource-based grant the threshold depends on the spillover and the difference in preferences for the local public good. Finally, for given levels of regional income disparity we show which grant form may minimise the claims for decentralisation.  相似文献

This paper studies a conditional block grant that Dutch municipalities receive for welfare-to-work programs. Many municipalities do not fully use this grant, although programs are beneficial for them. We argue that municipalities incur expenses to use the grant. If these costs are substantial, then it is optimal not to fully use the grant. Based on municipality-specific data on grants and actual expenditures, we estimate that municipalities have to add about 90 cents from their own resources to spend 1 euro of the grant. As a result, the conditional block grant is de facto a closed-ended matching grant.  相似文献

Using a simple three-period model in which a manager can gather information before making an investment decision, this paper studies optimal contracts with various stock options. In particular, we show how the exercise price of executive stock options is related to a base salary, the size of the option grant, leverage, and the riskiness of a desired investment policy. The optimal exercise price increases in the size of grant and the base salary and decreases in leverage and the riskiness of a desired investment policy. Other things equal, the optimal exercise price of European options with a longer maturity should increase more for an increase in the base salary and the size of grant and decrease more for an increase in leverage than the one with a shorter maturity. The optimal exercise price of American options is determined by the optimal exercise prices of European options with different maturities. Given the fixed exercise price, the size of the option grant does not decrease in the face value of debt.  相似文献

In this paper we use Malliavin calculus techniques to obtain an expression for the short-time behavior of the at-the-money implied volatility skew for a generalization of the Bates model, where the volatility does not need to be a diffusion or a Markov process, as the examples in Sect. 7 show. In this paper we propose a general derivative pricing framework that employs decoupled time-changed (DTC) Lévy processes to model the underlying assets of contingent claims. A DTC Lévy process is a generalized time-changed Lévy process whose continuous and pure jump parts are allowed to follow separate random time scalings; we devise the martingale structure for a DTC Lévy-driven asset and revisit many popular models which fall under this framework. Postulating different time changes for the underlying Lévy decomposition allows the introduction of asset price models consistent with the assumption of a correlated pair of continuous and jump market activity rates; we study one illustrative DTC model of this kind based on the so-called Wishart process. The theory we develop is applied to the problem of pricing not only claims that depend on the price or the volatility of an underlying asset, but also more sophisticated derivatives whose payoffs rely on the joint performance of these two financial variables, such as the target volatility option. We solve the pricing problem through a Fourier-inversion method. Numerical analyses validating our techniques are provided. In particular, we present some evidence that correlating the activity rates could be beneficial for modeling the volatility skew dynamics.  相似文献

The problem of the expected utility maximization in incomplete markets for a single agent is well understood in a fairly general setting. This paper studies the problem for the multi-agent case. For this case a cooperative investment game is posed as follows: firstly collect all agents capital together at the initial time, then invest the total capital in a trading strategy, and finally divide the terminal wealth of the trading strategy and each of them gets a part. In this paper we study the pricing problem for a class of universal variable life (UVL) insurance products, using the idea of principle of equivalent utility. As the main features of UVL products we allow the (death) benefit to depend on certain indices or assets that are not necessarily tradable (e.g., pension plans), and we also consider the “multiple decrement” cases in which various status of the insured are allowed and the benefit varies in accordance with the status. Following the general theory of indifference pricing, we formulate the pricing problem as stochastic control problems, and derive the corresponding HJB equations for the value functions. In the case of exponential utilities, we show that the prices can be expressed explicitly in terms of the global, bounded solutions of a class of semilinear parabolic PDEs with exponential growth. In the case of general insurance models where multiple decrements and random time benefit payments are all allowed, we show that the price should be determined by the solutions to a system of HJB equations, each component corresponds to the value function of an optimization problem with the particular status of the insurer.  相似文献

Except for the geometric Brownian model and the geometric Poissonian model, the general geometric Lévy market models are incomplete models and there are many equivalent martingale measures. In this paper we suggest to enlarge the market by a series of very special assets (power-jump assets) related to the suitably compensated power-jump processes of the underlying Lévy process. By doing this we show that the market can be completed. The very particular choice of the compensators needed to make these processes tradable is delicate. In the summer of 2008 the authors of this article met with Boone Pickens to discuss the centerpiece of the Pickens plan for moving the U.S. toward energy independence: the feasibility of wind power as a source for the production of electricity. That meeting, along with their survey of published sources, leads the authors to the following conclusions:
  • Wind power is an abundant and clean source of energy for the U.S. both now and in the future.

  • Wind power is now economically viable in some parts of the country, and would be viable throughout the wind-rich mid-section of the U.S. if we had a national transmission grid.


But developing such a grid faces several hurdles, including the cost of construction and the need for state-by-state approvals of interstate transmission lines. To overcome these obstacles, the authors offer the following policy recommendations:
  • Federal oversight of the construction of the national transmission grid. Moving toward renewable sources of energy and reduced greenhouse gas from the use of coal changes the problem of managing electric power generation from a local to regional and national problem. This requires broader cooperation and coordination to ensure the construction and management of reliable sources of electric power.

  • Identify adequate sources of financing. The positive economics of wind power suggest that wind farm development and transmission grid installation should attract sufficient private funding to fully develop the 20% wind solution. But because of the sheer size of the plan, completing it may require innovative financing structures that include the possibility of some combination of public and private funding sources.

We address a problem of stochastic optimal control motivated by portfolio optimization in mathematical finance, the goal of which is to minimize the expected value of a general quadratic loss function of the wealth at close of trade when there is a specified convex constraint on the portfolio, together with a specified almost-sure lower-bound on intertemporal wealth over the full trading interval. A precursor to the present work, by Heunis (Ann Financ 11:243–282, 2015), addressed the simpler problem of minimizing a general quadratic loss function with a convex portfolio constraint and a stipulated almost-sure lower-bound on the wealth only at close of trade. In the parlance of optimal control the problem that we shall address here exhibits the combination of a control constraint (i.e. the portfolio constraint) together with an almost-sure intertemporal state constraint (on the wealth over the full trading interval). Optimal control problems with this combination of constraints are well known to be quite challenging even in the deterministic case, and of course become still more so when one deals with these same constraints in a stochastic setting. We nevertheless find that an ingenious variational approach of Rockafellar (Conjugate duality and optimization, CBMS-NSF series no. 16, SIAM, 1974), which played a key role in the precursor work noted above, is fully equal to the challenges posed by this problem, and leads naturally to an appropriate vector space of dual variables, together with a dual functional on the space of dual variables, such that the dual problem of maximizing the dual functional is guaranteed to have a solution (or Lagrange multiplier) when the problem constraints satisfy a simple and natural Slater condition. We then establish necessary and sufficient conditions for the optimality of a candidate wealth process in terms of the Lagrange multiplier, and use these conditions to construct an optimal portfolio.  相似文献

At the heart of optimal hedging with additive models in Yamada (Recent advances in financial engineering: proceedings of the KIER-TMU international workshop on financial engineering, World Scientific, pp 225–245, 2010; Proceedings of the 2011 American control conference, pp 3856–3861, 2011; Asia-Pac Financ Mark 19(2):149–179, 2012) is to replicate the payoff of European basket options using separate options as close as possible. In this paper, we extend their technique for the case of path-dependent barrier options, where the mean square error of the payoffs between the basket barrier option and the sum of options on the individual assets is minimized over any smooth payoff functions. To this end, we propose to represent the underlying assets using the Brownian bride decomposition and show that computations involving conditional expectations of basket barrier options boil down to those of unconditional expectations. This procedure enables us to provide an algorithm to compute the necessary and sufficient condition for the optimal hedging problem based on the Monte Carlo method. Then, we consider to apply our methodology to the Black–Cox type first passage time structural model, where a defaultable company possesses/runs multiple assets/projects and the default may occur the first time the asset value hits a certain lower threshold before the maturity. We formulate the equity value separation problem using additive models, in which individual equity values are introduced so that their sum approximates the total equity value as close as possible. It is also shown that any portion of total equity value may be assigned as an initial value of each individual equity when using the optimal smooth functions. Finally, we examine the contributions of individual equity values to default or survival by applying a certain normalization for conditional expectations via numerical experiments to illustrate our proposed methodology.  相似文献

We consider a multi-stock market model where prices satisfy a stochastic differential equation with instantaneous rates of return modeled as a continuous time Markov chain with finitely many states. Partial observation means that only the prices are observable. For the investors objective of maximizing the expected utility of the terminal wealth we derive an explicit representation of the optimal trading strategy in terms of the unnormalized filter of the drift process, using HMM filtering results and Malliavin calculus. The optimal strategy can be determined numerically and parameters can be estimated using the EM algorithm.
