The objective of this paper is to identify the determinants of the reactions of farm households to the decoupling of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) focusing, in particular, on changes in on-farm investment behaviour. The paper analyses a sample of 248 farm-households in 8 EU countries, using a non-parametric approach based on classification tree algorithms. The factors emerging as determinants of an increase in on-farm investment as a reaction to decoupling are: specialisation, existence of a successor, the farmer's age, labour management, SFP per hectare, location and expectations. When used, country variables, tend to substitute some of the factors listed above and become the main predictors, followed by labour endowment, specialisation and expectations. While the study confirms the relevance of the main determinants available from the literature, it also emphasises the articulation (non-linearities) of the effects of farm head age, labour management and SFP per hectare on the reactions to decoupling. This hints at the need for further research on the way such factors combine in determining farm-household reactions to a changing market and policy context, and support the usefulness of non-parametric statistics tools for such types of analysis.  相似文献

Using high-frequency transaction data for the three largest European markets (France, Germany and Italy), this paper documents the existence of an asymmetric relationship between market liquidity and trading imbalances: when quoted spreads rise (fall) and liquidity falls (increases) buy (sell) orders tend to prevail. Risk-averse market-makers, with inventory-depletion risk being their main concern, tend to quote wider (narrower) spreads when they think bond appreciation is more (less) likely to occur. It is also found that the probability of being in a specific regime is related to observable bond market characteristics, stock market volatility, macroeconomic releases and liquidity management operations of the monetary authorities.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to assess the impact of financial crises on output for 11 European transition economies (CEECs). The results suggest that financial crises have a significant and permanent effect, lowering long‐term output by about 12–17 percent. The effect is larger in smaller countries in which the banking sector presented more important financial disequilibria. We also found that fiscal policy has been the most efficient tool in dealing with the crises, whereas the effect of monetary policy has been rather modest. Flexible exchange rates are found to attenuate the impact of the crises in the short and medium term, but to amplify the effect in the long run. International Monetary Fund support is found to moderate the effect in the long run. Finally, the effect in the CEECs is considerably larger than in the EU advanced economies.  相似文献

In the real world firms operate in more than one market and consequently can exploit scope economies and/or demand complementarities. Introducing multi-product firms in the picture makes the standard assumption that more competition is always beneficial for social welfare less clear-cut. In this paper we show that a concentrated structure can be socially preferable in the presence of scope economies, whereas a fragmented structure has to be preferred when products are close substitutes. We also identify either analytically or numerically the socially optimal market structure when aggregate output (and then consumer surplus) or total welfare are used as ranking criteria. The analysis is useful for discussing which market structure should be favored by policy makers aimed at introducing competition in sectors which were previously monopolized by state-owned firms. To that respect, our findings point out that not only the level (number of firms) but also the form (type of firms) of competition matters.  相似文献

Traditional supply chain models were developed mainly for non-luxury companies and find very little correspondence in the field of luxury, which is considered here as a business super-area including heterogeneous enterprises, belonging to different sectors, which have in common customers characterized by the “need for luxury”. The objective of this paper is to investigate, through a multiple case-study research, peculiar purchasing and supply management practices put in place by luxury firms and to provide a classification of the most recurring approaches. Relevant dimensions (i.e. product complexity and sale volume) to classify luxury firms practices have been used: as a result, four groups of companies have been identified and their purchasing practices described.  相似文献

Negotiators may respond to each other’s offers and demands in different ways. Whereas many negotiation experiments present participants with numerical information about offers and counteroffers (e.g., “I propose 6–8–2”; numerical response mode), real life negotiations often involve affective and evaluative statements (e.g., “I didn’t like your last offer, but I would be happy to explore alternatives”; affective response mode). The present research explores the differential consequences of responding in affective as opposed to numerical terms. Specifically, we predicted and found that affective responses increase the impact of social and contextual cues on negotiation behavior. Three studies demonstrate that the impact of other’s toughness (Experiment 1), other’s respectability (Experiment 2), and other’s appearance (Experiment 3) on a negotiator’s demands and concessions is greater when the other provides affective rather than numerical feedback.  相似文献

This paper analyses the process of knowledge growth in a branch of medical science. It proposes a study on the scientific advances in glaucoma research organized in two parts. The first presents a qualitative overview of the problem sequences that have characterized 150years of medical research in ophthalmology. This is complemented in the second part by a network analysis of scientific publications and collaborations of the last 50years. Medical knowledge, we surmise, is punctuated by patterns of specialization, diversification and coordination that emerge both within and among scientific, technical, institutional and organizational realms.  相似文献

The adoption and diffusion of environmental innovations (EIs) is crucial to greening the economy and achieving win–win environmental/economic gains. A large and increasing literature has focused on the levers underlying EIs that are external to the firm, such as stakeholder and policy pressures. Little attention, however, has been devoted to the possible role of local spillovers of a sector/geographical nature as a factor that correlates with EIs and economic performances. A rich data set that covers the innovative activities and economic performances of firms in the Emilia-Romagna region in Italy, an area dense in manufacturing districts, is analysed. EIs’ drivers and effects on firms’ performance are investigated through a two-step procedure. First, we examine the relevance of spatial levers, namely, whether high rates of eco-innovators in a given local area induce the adoption of EIs in firms located in the same local area. The role of the ‘agglomeration lever’ turns out to be fairly local in nature: we find that spillovers are significantly inducing innovation within municipal boundaries. Second, we test whether EIs adoptions have significantly increased firms’ economic performances and find that some firms’ productivity performances are positively related to EI adoption.  相似文献

In this paper some of the results emerged in the empirical literature on diversification are put into perspective against the background of a simple integrative model of multiproduct firms. By letting diversification strategies depend on the simultaneous play of four factors (demand relationships and technological links between goods, collusion within a market and across markets), the latter provides an illustrative framework which is useful to discuss how effectively the issue of ambiguous findings has been tackled in applied works. In some cases scholars have devoted substantial effort in order to build tests which can successfully discriminate among the different views on the causes and effects of diversification, while in other circumstances empirical investigations have been conducted with much less care. Other then criticising some of the methods used in the past, the paper provides a number of suggestions that can help guiding future empirical work on corporate diversification. Two cases of liposarcoma of the stomach are described. At computed tomography (CT) the neoplasms showed features of an aggressive malignant tumor, with no fatty values within. We discuss the differential diagnosis of such lesions and conclude that, although rare, liposarcoma should be considered as a possible diagnosis when a large exophytic gastric mass is detected at CT.  相似文献
