Integration erneuerbarer Energien in die deutsche Stromversorgung im Zeitraum 2015�C2020 mit Ausblick auf 2025

The dena grid study II examines the integration of renewable energies into Germany??s electricity supply up to the year 2020 and gives a qualified outlook up to 2025. The study develops geographically differentiated scenarios for installed wind power capacity, on the basis of which time series of the wind power feed-in into high and extra high voltage nodes and offshore wind farms are generated. Future requirements for the transmission grid and grid extension options are analysed. Opportunities to introduce more flexibility in the power system in terms of supply and demand are examined. The study gives a conceptual perspective of the need for grid extension in inner Germany in order to fully integrate renewable energies, whilst operating power stations at optimum cost and exchanging electricity with other countries in response to market demands within the scope of the specified transmission capacities.     

Beyond environmental scarcity: Human and social capital as driving forces of bootstrapping activities

Although entrepreneurship scholars highlight bootstrapping as a key resource acquisition approach to respond to the inherent resource constraints that nascent ventures face, little is known about what causes nascent ventures to engage in bootstrapping. Theory highlights the environment as an important determinant of bootstrapping activity. Analyzing bootstrapping behavior of 298 nascent ventures, we find that beyond perceived environmental factors, individual characteristics of the nascent entrepreneurs and factors relating to the embeddedness of the entrepreneurs in the environment determine their venture's bootstrapping behavior. In a more fine-grained analysis we gain insights into how these antecedents shape the use of particular bootstrapping strategies. Findings contribute to our understanding of factors driving resource management approaches in nascent ventures.     

Promotion of US private investment

The Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) has been officially in business since January 19, 1971. Its major purpose is to reorganise and widen the scope of programmes for the promotion of US private investment overseas in developing countries.     

Service Production Functions

The paper derives production functions designed to model the evolution of service industries. The derivation is based on specifying the output elasticities of the factors according to differential equations and asymptotic technological boundary conditions in factor space. The derived functional forms incorporate labor, capital, energy, and technology parameters, whose time changes model innovation and structural change. The model is applied to the evolution of the German market-determined services 1960–1989.     

Can household mobility solve basic environmental problems?

The paper studies the role of household mobility for efficiency of decentralized environmental policy. Pollutants may travel across regional boundaries, and regions can influence their capital income from abroad as well as the rent outflow to nonresidents by means of their environmental policy. Different degrees of interregional household mobility are analyzed within this framework. While regional governments internalize all externalities in their own self-interest in the case of perfect household mobility, only a region that voluntarily makes an interregional transfer to the other region has incentives to internalize interregional externalities if households are imperfectly mobile.     

Internalizing intergenerational externalities by regionalization

The emission of long-lived pollutants and public debt policies are related by the joint problem of intergenerational externalities. This paper examines both phenomena from the local perspective, in a model with interregional household mobility. We conclude that local environmental agencies have incentives to internalize all intergenerational pollution externalities, provided all rents of immobile production factors, including waste emissions, are appropriated by the regions. Contrary to widespread belief, however, neutrality of local public debt is not guaranteed in general. Shifts in the intertemporal pattern of local taxes change the net wealth of local property owners if distortionary residence-based taxes are imposed to service the local debt.     

On the power of nonparametric changepoint-tests

We consider a sequenceX _1n,..., X_nn, n N, of independent random elements. We construct consistent level- tests forH ₀:=0 versusH ₁:(0, 1), which are based on certainU-statistic type processes. A detailed investigation of the power function is also provided.     

Who knows it is a game? On strategic awareness and cognitive ability

We examine strategic awareness in experimental games, that is, the question of whether subjects realize they are playing a game and thus have to form beliefs about others’ actions. We conduct a beauty contest game and elicit measures of cognitive ability and beliefs about others’ cognitive ability. We show that the effect of cognitive ability is highly non-linear. Subjects below a certain threshold choose numbers in the whole interval and their behavior does not correlate with beliefs about others’ ability. In contrast, subjects who exceed the threshold avoid choices above 50 and react very sensitively to beliefs about the cognitive ability of others.
