A model for optimal resource allocation in the capital budgeting framework

Moder and Nicki (MN) presented in a recent issue of this journal a resource allocation model in the context of an urban renewal framework. This model was developed under “certainty” assumption. The present paper extends the MN model to “risk” conditions in the capital budgeting framework of a firm. The paper defines an appropriate measure of risk and explicitly introduces the possibilities of borrowing and lending in the model. Further analysis shows that slight variations of the constraints in the model yield important long-run policy guidelines to the management for resource allocation purposes.

Unionization,Compensation, and Voice Effects on Quits and Retention

This study explores the relationships among unionization, compensation practices, and employee attachment (quit rates and tenure) among trucking companies to assess the applicability of Freeman and Medoff's exit/voice argument. Unionization was associated with lower quit rates, higher tenure, a better compensation package, and stronger voice mechanisms. The relationship of unionization to quit rates and tenure becomes nonsignificant after accounting for compensation (pay and benefits), and voice mechanisms do not add explanatory variance.     

Style consumption: its drivers and role in sustainable apparel consumption

This study proposes style consumption (SC) as a way to foster sustainable apparel consumption. In doing so, we identify explanatory and outcome variables of SC and also examine gender differences in these variables. Based on an online survey with 586 consumers, we find that frugal apparel consumption (FAC), fashion consciousness (FC) and ecologically conscious consumption (ECC) enhance the likelihood of SC. SC in turn increases environmental apparel purchase (EAP) and sustainable apparel divestment (SAD). The results also suggest significant gender differences both in motivational and behavioural variables included in the model. Specifically, females are significantly higher than males in FAC, FC and ECC. The tendency of SC, EAP and SAD were also higher for females than males. In addition, we find that gender is a significant factor mediating the effect of FC and that of ECC on SC.     

Building and transforming an emerging market global enterprise: Lessons from the Infosys journey

The story of Infosys’ growth and transformation from a $250 start-up to its current market valuation of approximately $26 billion provides one of the most pertinent lessons in leveraging India's strengths and managing the challenges faced by an emerging market global enterprise based in India. In this article, we present a wide-ranging interview with Infosys’ current CEO, Mr. S.D. Shibulal, as he explains what he considers to be the core strengths of the company that made it successful in the past, lays out his vision for the company's future, and discusses in detail how he sees the company's transformation taking place over the coming years. The conversation uncovers several interesting themes and lessons for multinational enterprises in emerging as well as developed economies, including the relevance of being born global, values-based governance, the necessity of creating hybrid business models that infuse the ‘India way’ with local cultures and practices in global markets, leveraging strategic partnerships via co-creation and co-evolution, and the delicate balance between ‘preservation-creation-destruction.’     

Role of entrepreneur gender and management style in influencing perceptions and behaviors of new recruits: Evidence from the Islamic Republic of Iran

Entrepreneurs face considerable challenges in attracting prospective recruits and managing them in the absence of established norms and traditions. This research examines how gender and management styles of entrepreneurs impact new recruits’ attitudes including their cognitions, affect, and behaviors in new ventures. Results of two experimental studies conducted in the Islamic Republic of Iran demonstrate that women entrepreneurs are reacted to less negatively and considered more effective when they use directive management style. In addition, women entrepreneurs who employ directive style elicit superior performance from new recruits compared to those who rely on participative style. Management style does not appear to matter for attitudes towards men entrepreneurs. Implications and future research directions are discussed.
