The paper examines the economic feasibility of a robot installation in a metal industry located In the mid-west. The different viewpoints were considered: (1) the company's viewpoint and (it) the government's viewpoint. The results of the economic analysis indicated that the robot installation, though desirable from the company's viewpoint, 1b not always attractive to the government, especially if it leads to permanent unemployment of the displaced employees. However, when the displaced employees are relocated, with or without retraining, the robot installation becomes economically desirable from both viewpoints. The Impact of robot installations on employment displacement and the CNP is discussed and certain policy changes are suggested to make robotization of work places beneficial to all concerned. 相似文献

Consumer behaviourists and consumer policy-makers are interested in the degree to which global convergence is occurring for various consumer behaviour dimensions, the extent to which the consumption patterns in different parts of the world are becoming similar and the extent to which these trends may be influenced and/or influence consumer policy. With increasing internationalization and cultural cross-fertilization, the industrialized societies of the world are converging in many ways. Shifts in alcohol consumption patterns in Europe over the past 50 years represent a case in point. As traditional cultural boundaries become blurred, consumer preferences for alcoholic beverages appear to be driven less by long-standing local and regional traditions and more by growing acceptance of a wider choice. The disparity in total alcohol consumption among the 15 countries studied has also decreased. Other powerful forces are likely to accelerate the pace of convergence in the future. 相似文献

This paper investigates the effects of takeovers on workers’ employment prospects and wages in the UK for the years 1987–1995. We address directly the idea that takeovers involve a ‘breach of trust’ with employees. Our results provide no support for the breach of trust hypothesis and rather suggest shareholders and workers in the post‐acquisition joint entity are locked in a form of ‘equal misery’ following the execution of the takeover. There already an exist a wide range of event studies documenting the effect of takeovers on shareholders and a smaller number of studies discussing the impact of takeovers on employees. The contribution of the present study is to relate the separate effects of acquisition on these two groups to each other. By doing so we seek to test directly the proposition that takeovers reallocate rents from workers to target shareholders, via the bid‐premia paid on acquisition. 相似文献

Using a microeconomic model and data from the Establishment Panel of the German Institute for Employment Research, we analyze the optimal establishment size against the background of rent-seeking workers and the influence of works councils. The theoretical part shows that establishment size has not only a discouragement effect on the level of individual rent seeking but also a quantity effect as the number of rent seekers increases. The interplay of both effects – together with technological considerations – determines whether the employer chooses an inefficiently small or large establishment size. Introduction of a works council restores efficient establishment size although it is purely used as rent-seeking device. Whether the employer benefits from a works council or not depends on the degree of contract incompleteness and the degree of worker coordination via a works council. The empirical part indicates dominance of the discouragement effect over the quantity effect in establishments without works council. As theoretically predicted, works councils are beneficial by disentangling rent-seeking and production issues, thus eliminating the influence of the two rent-seeking effects. 相似文献

This article develops an “ordonomic” approach to business ethics in the age of globalization. Through the use of a three-tiered
conceptual framework that distinguishes between the basic game of antagonistic social cooperation, the meta game of rule-setting,
and the meta-meta game of rule-finding discourse, we address three questions, the answers to which we believe are crucial
to fostering effective business leadership and corporate social responsibility. First, the purpose of business in society
is value creation. Companies have a social mandate to organize mutually advantageous cooperation. Second, business ethics should teach the
management competencies necessary to fulfill business’s societal mandate. These competencies are optimization competence in the basic game of value
creation, governance competence in the meta game of (political) rule setting, and the three discourse-related skills of orientation
competence, reception competence, and communication competence necessary for engaging in the meta-meta game. Third, companies
can help solve global problems through global corporate citizenship if they participate as political and moral actors in rule-setting processes and rule-finding discourse aimed at laying the

This paper provides new insights into the relationship between exchange rates and productivity developments for European Economies. We focus on the question whether productivity changes have a long‐run impact on real effective exchange rates for a large number of European economies. Focusing on a sample period running from 1995 until 2013, we adopt a cointegrated vector autoregressive approach and distinguish between long‐run equilibrium, short‐run dynamics and long‐run impact of shocks. Our findings show that for several industrialized economies, real effective exchange rates and labor productivity are not related over the long‐run. A possible explanation for this result is that wage developments do not reflect increases in labor productivity to a large degree, which prevents a transmission to the real effective exchange rate through the price channel. The results for Central and Eastern European Countries are more encouraging since a positive impact of labor productivity on real effective exchange rate is frequently observed. 相似文献
