This paper examines effects of academic networks in a Stackelberg differential game between journal editors and authors. Authors
choose research papers to maximize satisfaction, while editors determine research quality to maximize journal reputation.
Verifying the system for stability, results show that academic networks neither affect the number of publications nor the
quality of an author’s papers. Networks only affect the number of an author’s citations. Editors’ preferences for publishing
an author because of her network membership seem irrelevant. This happens because editors compete to increase their journal’s
reputation by publishing high quality papers. Consequently, there is little room for editorial bias. Further, increased journal
competition has the potential to erode the citation gains. The equilibrium research quality is below the maximum possible
quality. Increases in publication benefits are shown to leave citations unaffected, increase the number of publications, and
decrease research quality. The results generally carry through when publishing markets tend to a monopoly. 相似文献

Abstract Let the random variable X denote the time taken in completion of a process. For a fixed a, if the observed value of X is less than a, the X is observable, but if X is greater than a, the process is tampered with and is accelerated or decelerated at time a by some unknown factor α, and Y=a+α(X-a) is observed. If the experimenter has only partial control over the experiment, it may be difficult to get several observations on Y corresponding to the same a value. Thus we have a set of independent but not identically distributed observations. The large sample behavior of m.l.e. of the unknown parameters based on tampered random variables Y b1 , ..., Y bn is studied. If X follows an exponential distribution with mean (1/--), ... the consistency and asymptotic normality of the m.l.e. of α and -- is established under mild conditions on a b1, a b2, ... The conditions needed for establishing the consistency of m.l.e. of lX are given when X follows a uniform distribution U(O, --) or when X has any known distributional form 相似文献

Increased activity by U.S. students to study abroad has invited several studies that have investigated the reasons for U.S. students to study abroad. Literature in the context of study abroad choices has been fragmented, with each study presenting an ad-hoc set of factors the author/s deem as important or that have been shown to be important in previous literature. However, no study to date has attempted to identify a theoretical framework that explains why these factors should be important in explaining the intention to participate in a study abroad program. In this study, we use the theoretical background of the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) and trait theory to unify the existing body of literature and arrive at a model that predicts study abroad intentions. We test this model by means of a survey administered in a U.S. university. 相似文献

This paper examines determinants of process innovation introductions across 115 (mostly) developing countries. Empirical research on process innovations lags behind product innovations. Accounting for firm characteristics, R&D, regulations and taxes, and corruption, results show that sole proprietors and R&D‐performing firms were more likely to introduce innovations, whereas greater prosperity made them less likely to do so. Corruption had a greasing effect, whereas firms in island nations were less likely to introduce, ceteris paribus. Effects of regulations and taxes and other firm characteristics were largely insignificant. Finally, some differences existed across manufacturing and service industries and across prevalence of innovation introductions. 相似文献

This paper focuses on entrepreneurship by academic leaders. With the use of patents, inventions, and spin‐offs to measure commercialization, and directors, research group leaders, and business owners as academic leaders, results, using a sample of more than 2,500 German researchers, show differences across academic leaders and commercialization. Findings for spin‐offs are different from those for patents and inventions. Academic leaders in sciences were more likely to commercialize. Doctoral degrees helped patents by business owners and spin‐offs by group leaders, whereas female business owners and female group leaders faced challenges patenting and inventing, respectively. For business owners, age increased the likelihood of patenting but lowered spin‐offs. 相似文献

This paper uses recent US state-level data to examine smoking behavior across four population groups divided by age, literacy,
income and ethnicity. Another contribution lies in the consideration of various smoking control policies and the full costs
of smoking. Overall, the results show that non-price smoking policies are relatively more effective than price or tax policies
in reducing smoking prevalence and that these policies gain effectiveness as the population begins to age.

Unlike previous fraud detection research, a vast majority of which has focused primarily on the use of quantitative financial information to predict fraud, in this study we examine qualitative textual content in annual reports to predict fraud and see whether there are discernible differences in the writing and presentation style between companies that committed fraud and those that did not. We believe that while numeric financial information in the annual reports can hide details of fraud, textual information relating to writing and presentation styles in such reports provides valuable clues pertaining to the existence of fraud. In this study we use the chi‐square test to analyse our data and test hypotheses about predictors of fraud that may explain linguistic feature variations in fraudulent and nonfraudulent annual reports. We provide new results on the usefulness of the qualitative content of annual reports in detecting fraud. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Does income inequality sand or grease the wheels of entrepreneurial activity? International evidence
Using a large panel of countries, this research examines the influence of income inequality on entrepreneurship. The impact of income disparities on entrepreneurship is not clear a priori—with a positive effect when inequality encourages entrepreneurship (“greasing effect”) or a negative effect when entrepreneurship discourages entrepreneurship (“sanding effect”). Our findings, across alternative measures of income inequality and even allowing for simultaneity, are consistent with the motivation or greasing effect. An equally insightful finding is that the effect of inequality switches across the prevalence of entrepreneurship—the sanding effect exists in nations with a low prevalence of entrepreneurship, and switches to a greasing effect as the prevalence of entrepreneurship increases. This is suggestive of positive network externalities from entrepreneurship—it takes a threshold level of entrepreneurship in a nation for greasing from income inequality to take hold. 相似文献

Using data for over 100 nations over the years 2004–2007, this study examines the effect, of institutional quality on environmental pollution, focusing primarily on influences of corruption, and the shadow economy, and paying special attention to MENA countries. Controlling for a, number of factors, results show that both more corrupt nations and nations with large shadow sectors have qualitatively and quantitatively similar effects in yielding fewer (recorded) emissions; however, MENA nations have higher pollution rates. Policy implications are noted. 相似文献
