Residential Enclosure,Power and Relationality: Rethinking Sociopolitical Relations in Southeast Asian Cities

As in many other areas around the globe, enclosed residential spaces have proliferated in Southeast Asia since the 1990s. Recent publications have presented such gated communities as ‘porous enclaves', implying multiple socio‐spatial dynamics of movements through gates and walls. However, the enclave model does not suffice for analyzing the relational dynamics generated by enclosed residential estates. The concept of ‘ecotonal space' and social geography are used to show, in the case of Cambodia's capital Phnom Penh, that the enclosure and its borders are producers and products of multiple social, spatial, economic and political relations, both symbolic and material. Property developers assert their position as an emerging elite in the city's society and politics, a process based on different types of everyday relations they have with the inhabitants of their residential estates and territorial institutions. The enclosed residential estate can serve as a resource for deploying new power relations. Consubstantial with the neopatrimonial nature of the Cambodian economy and politics, this process is a response to the opacity and uncertainty of real estate markets and urban development.     

An evaluation of yardstick regulation for European airports

The European airport industry is subject to various forms of economic regulation and there is debate as to which of the systems provides the best incentives for allocative and productive efficiency. This paper deals with the applicability of benchmarking as a regulatory tool for airports. This form of regulation aims at evaluating the cost level of a firm by comparing it to the mean marginal cost structure of all other firms in the market. The paper investigates the difficulties arising from airport benchmarking as well as the benefits that might be derived from it by drawing lessons from benchmark regulation in other industries and the few cases where it has been applied to airports. In particular, it assesses whether yardstick regulation is a feasible alternative to the existing forms of economic regulation or whether yardsticks are more useful for internal management purposes.     

Partnership: Basis for future policies

Changes that have taken place in world trade and politics during the first half of the seventies do not remain without impact on the guidelines of development policies. It is highly likely that future development policies will have to be based increasingly on partnership and not so much, as in the past, on aid pure and simple.     

The impact of brand authenticity on brand trust and SME growth: A CEO perspective

This article investigates the linkages between brand authenticity, brand trust, and SME growth from a CEO perspective. Brand authenticity is operationalized as consisting of three factors: brand consistency, brand customer orientation, and brand congruency. The hypotheses derived in this paper will be tested with new measures and data from 285 German SMEs using structural equation modeling. The results confirm that brand consistency and congruency foster brand trust, which in turn drives SME growth.
