The political economy of Brexit generates new challenges for the UK’s national business model and for European capitalism more broadly. Two symposia examine the implications of the UK’s withdrawal from the EU in key economic policy areas. These symposia contribute to two main bodies of academic literature: the political economy literature on varieties of capitalism, with a specific focus on the UK, and the political economy literature on key economic policy areas of the EU. This short introduction to the first symposium first outlines the key features of the British variety of capitalism and highlight the main questions raised by Brexit in that respect. It then summarises the main findings of the papers of the first symposium and tease out some common themes.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This paper presents a framework to assess the cultural sustainability of Aboriginal tourism in British Columbia, which meets must take into account the protection of human rights, good self-governance, identity, control of land, the tourism product’s authenticity, and a market-ready tourism product. These criteria are specified by two indicators each. The cultural sustainability framework was generated by triangulating qualitative research methods like experts’ interviews, secondary research, and participant and non-participant observations. This paper is thus conceptual in nature and inductive in its approach. It partly leverages a collaborative approach, as it includes interviewees in an iterative research loop. Furthermore, the paper shows why cultural sustainability is a determinant of the success of Aboriginal tourism.  相似文献

Published research on municipal climate change plans to date has been strictly cross-sectional: it reveals the status of plans at particular points in time, but does not examine whether and how plans are evolving over time to keep pace with our understanding of climate change. We build on a 2011 study of plans in the Canadian province of British Columbia by examining updated versions of those plans as of 2015. We find that the climate change content in the plans did not change much from 2011-2015 and that there is much room for improvement. Our findings suggest that municipalities can possibly strengthen their plans by: (1) investing resources into creating and maintaining a detailed inventory of factual information regarding local climate risk and vulnerability, and (2) fostering political support among elected officials and residents for developing climate change planning goals and implementation mechanisms to help achieve the goals.  相似文献

自20世纪70年代国际政治经济学产生以来,呈现出不同国家和地区的研究特点与学术传统。如同国际关系学科一样,美国学派在国际政治经济学研究中占据着主导地位,英国学派则处于半边缘状态。笔者首先分别界定英国学派与美国学派,然后从知识传统、方法论、议题设置等维度诠释二者间存在的差异,进而从历史背景、学术传统以及学术训练等方面解释英美学派间的差异,并且考察英美学派间目前的交流状态及其对话的必要。由于国际政治经济学并不是由方法论所确定的,而是由共同的研究主题以及核心概念所界定,因而英美学派有必要进行切实的对话以构建一个真正的全球性国际政治经济学科。  相似文献

Herein we examine recommendations made in 1944 by Friedrich Hayek for the Government of Gibraltar, regarding Gibraltar's future economic prospects. In keeping with Hayek's ideas in The Road to Serfdom, he proposed reducing state-led economic planning in Gibraltar alongside proposals to lift restrictions upon the operation of a free market in rents and labour. Hayek's proposals were rejected by both governments in Gibraltar and London because they were not compatible with the economic planning of colonial economies, inspired by Keynes, and provision of welfare systems in the empire inspired by Beveridge, both dominant ideas during the mid-1940s in government circles.  相似文献

This article addresses the call for empirical work to contribute to the ongoing critique of service-dominant (S-D) logic, and for an assessment of its potential reach to practitioners. It examines the appropriateness of a model of the resource-based view of consumers in an organizational context — the British Library (BL) — and concludes that the model can be adapted to include individual customers with varying motivations (personal/business) for using the BL's services. A detailed analysis of individual customer's operant resources (enabled through access to 565 messages posted to a BL user support forum) provided a different lens through which the organization could consider strategies to support value co-creation. The outcomes, from a collaborative research process, with executives and senior managers of BL, suggest that a sub-division of customer operant resources into physical, cultural and social has empirical support and managerial relevance, and that a focus on individual customer resources can provide insights into how to manage co-creation of value.  相似文献

对近年来国内城市研究界关于二战后英美两国城市更新的研究做一综述,分四个方向进行了探讨,即对城市更新的概念及具体操作方式的研究;对城市更新发展历程的综述性研究;对城市更新机制和组织形式的研究;对一种独特的城市更新现象--"城市绅士化"的研究.最后对这些研究进行了总体评价,认为研究者的学科背景呈现一定程度的多元化;在研究的阶段和内容上初步呈现深层次、多维度的研究态势;研究路径表现出城市规划研究与城市设计研究的分异趋势;研究中的一个薄弱点是城市更新中规划师的立场与角色定位.  相似文献

The paper examines UK government positions on the regulation of transnational labour in the context of Brexit. Through an analysis of EU regulations on posted workers – the practice whereby a company based in one EU member state sends workers to carry out a service in another EU member state – the paper argues that the UK has consistently advocated further liberalisation of transnational labour markets in EU level decision-making, a position consistent with promoting increasingly ‘flexible’ labour markets at home. Brexit marks a turning point. Demands from British workers for stronger protection against liberalising pressure help explain the UK's recent shift towards relaxing its opposition to ‘market-correcting’ EU initiatives like the revised posted worker directive. Brexit provides a window of opportunity for the revitalisation of ‘Social Europe’ in the EU-27, without a longstanding veto player at the bargaining table, but one more likely focused more on upholding national labour protections than initiating new supranational policies.  相似文献
