INCENTIVES AND SOCIAL NORMS: A MOTIVATION‐BASED ECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF SOCIAL NORMS

Abstract It is now commonplace to regard social norms as a subject of growing interest in the economic literature (e.g. game theoretical approaches based on ‘other‐regarding’ individual preferences, the analysis of the impact of rewards or punishment on individuals’ behaviour through experimental economics as well as field experiments, the revival of the institutionalist tradition spurred on by the influential work of Douglas North and followed by many others and the growing influence of neuroeconomics). In this paper, we focus on the relationship between incentives and social norms and survey the literature that could constitute the foundations of a motivation‐based economic analysis of social norms. Our main findings are that (1) the interaction between incentives and social norms is far from obvious since taking social norms into account involves the introduction of supplementary motives, in addition to self‐interest, into the economic analytical framework; (2) the analysis of the interaction between incentives and social norms resists an approach exclusively in terms of crowding‐in and ‐out effects because it is sensitive to whether it concerns behaviours driven by honour or by social stigma; (3) as a result, it is difficult to precisely evaluate the policy implication of the interactions between incentives and social norms.     

Beyond convenience: the future for independent food and grocery retailers in the UK

The UK's independent food and grocery retail sector's competitive advantage of 'convenience' has been eroded in recent years as major retailers increase opening hours and develop their own convenience trading formats. As a result, large numbers of independent retailers are closing. A UK-wide survey was undertaken to identify other sources of competitive advantages, and the changes needed to stop or reverse the decline in this sector. Exploratory semi-structured interviews led to the development of a questionnaire on six major issues affecting the sector. 'Snowball' sampling, using industry partners, provided 142 respondents. The provision of a 'social shopping experience' emerged as a key competitive advantage that could be developed. Improving vertical and horizontal trading alliances, and the wider use of information technology, provided other options.

我国建设社会主义新农村的理论与实践

1949年新中国成立后,在土地改革和农业社会主义改造完成的基础上,中国共产党加强了对农村工作的领导和建设。十一届三中全会后,随着农村改革实践的深入,农业生产力得到了解放与发展,农村面貌发生了巨大变化,中国共产党适应农村发展变化了的新实际,提出了建设社会主义新农村;并结合我国农村改革发展的不断深化,把建设社会主义新农村推向新的发展阶段,进一步促进了农业发展、农村稳定和农民增收,加速了全面建设小康社会的步伐。     

金融危机背景下安徽省保投资适度增长问题研究

国际金融危机的冲击导致我国经济增长方式转型加速,经济结构调整形势严峻。安徽经济增长态势风险加剧,投资驱动型经济主导性再次凸显。在客观阐述国际金融危机对安徽省投资增长影响的前提下,深入分析了安徽省保投资增长的一系列政策措施及其社会效应。依据投资增长理论和经济增长均衡理论对进一步推进安徽省保投资适度增长提出了五点对策建议。     

外墙饰面砖返碱防治方法

传统的外墙饰面砖施工方法是用水泥浆黏结和填缝,由于材料、施工等因素的影响,瓷砖出现返碱现象,极大地破坏了建筑装饰效果。文章分析了瓷砖返碱的成因,并提出相应的预防措施。

在经济全球化与区域经济一体化进程不断加快的背景下,区域经济整合成为一种态势。有效的区域分工协作是推动区域经济整合的关键。为此,文章采用区域配置系数、区域专业化系数和相似系数着力分析海峡西岸经济区与长江三角洲、珠江三角洲经济区的区域分工协作现状,并提出促进三大经济区协调发展的对策建议,从而推进东部沿海经济的均衡协调发展。     

以科学发展观进一步夯实学院党建工作

党的十七大提出，要“以改革创新精神全面推进党的建设新的伟大工程”。高校党的建设工作是全面推进党的建设新的伟大工程的重要组成部分。坚持创新党的建设工作，不断改进与加强思想政治工作，取得了一定成效。该文结合高校的根本任务与广东农工商职业技术学院党的建设工作特色，通过分析，总结经验与不足，提出了进一步运用科学发展观夯实学院党的建设工作的几点思路，以创新党的建设工作，不断改进与加强思想政治工作。
