Relative Performance Evaluation of Mutual Funds: A Non-Parametric Approach

We propose an alternative mutual fund performance index which addresses the benchmark problem and controls for economies of scale in managing mutual funds. We advance a new concept of 'return-cost' efficiency as another important element in evaluating portfolio management, in addition to the mean-variance efficiency concept. Our index based on a non-parametric estimation is shown to be similar to the Sharpe index with multiple slopes (or factors). We have shown that all fund categories, except income funds, have similar average efficiency scores after controlling for economies of scale. Most funds operate in increasing returns to scale and seem to be successful in holding mean-variance efficient portfolios, but unsuccessful in allocating transaction costs efficiently, evidenced by excessive turnovers and loads.

盈余管理计量模型与关联方交易——一项实证研究

盈余管理计量模型是盈余管理研究的最重要工具之一,这些模型的恰当应用是研究结论有效的重要前提。文章使用中国证券市场A股2000-2004年的经验数据,对应用最广泛的Jones模型和Modified-Jones模型的模型界定①(Model specification)及检定功效(Detecting power)两种统计性质进行评估。结果表明,不同的盈余管理方式对Jones模型的检定功效(Detecting power)有着较大影响。当样本公司存在大量关联方交易时,应用两种Jones模型可能会造成严重的计量误差。

Impact of land tenure on land use in low-income countries

The role of land tenure in agricultural development has been a subject of intensive research, particularly within the context of land and agrarian reform. The complexity of the world's major land tenure systems is well recognized and no attempt is made here to go beyond an overview as this paper limits itself to the impact of land tenure on land use in low income situations. Present land use is determined by a host of factors, of a physical/biological and socioeconomic nature. In applying land evaluation, the question it is necessary to ask is to what extent, when and where land tenure conditions act as a considerable constraining factor impeding a more optimal use of land resources. Even in what used to be low-population density areas (such as Sub-Saharan Africa) it appears that the frontier phase is becoming exhausted and the intensification of agriculture proceeds; it becomes imperative to examine land tenure in relation to land use implications. It is shown that so far a multi-disciplinary approach has often been lacking in treating land tenure and related issues.     

科学社会学理论视角下科技社团治理有效性评价与检验

以治理目标为导向的结果有效作为评价重点，依照科学社会学中的科学二分法理论，结合典型文献构建具体评价指标体系，并对其进行检验与实证分析。主要结论如下：第一，科技社团治理目标的实现程度正向显著影响组织社会影响力与满意度水平；第二，当前我国科技社团总体治理有效性水平处于起步阶段，科技传播能力较强，但科技服务能力明显偏弱，且学会之间存在分化现象。其中，医科类较好，交叉学科则表现欠佳；第三，我国科技社团治理改革内在驱动力不足，政策效用与行政干预现象较明显。事实上，行政干预力量最弱的科技社团，其治理有效性水平反而最高。当前，治理转型的突破口集中在挂靠到事业单位的科技社团。
