Institutions,resources, and entry strategies in emerging economies

We investigate the impact of market‐supporting institutions on business strategies by analyzing the entry strategies of foreign investors entering emerging economies. We apply and advance the institution‐based view of strategy by integrating it with resource‐based considerations. In particular, we show how resource‐seeking strategies are pursued using different entry modes in different institutional contexts. Alternative modes of entry—greenfield, acquisition, and joint venture (JV)—allow firms to overcome different kinds of market inefficiencies related to both characteristics of the resources and to the institutional context. In a weaker institutional framework, JVs are used to access many resources, but in a stronger institutional framework, JVs become less important while acquisitions can play a more important role in accessing resources that are intangible and organizationally embedded. Combining survey and archival data from four emerging economies, India, Vietnam, South Africa, and Egypt, we provide empirical support for our hypotheses. Joint Advertising and Brand Congruity: Effects on Memory and Attitudes

This research examined how brand congruity in joint advertising affects individuals’ processing of advertising messages. An experiment was conducted whereby ads promoting two congruent or incongruent brands were presented to subjects under low versus high processing load. Results showed that advertising messages for congruent brands were better remembered under both high and low processing loads. However, ads with congruent brands led to positive attitudes only when subjects’ processing resources were constrained. These findings suggest congruent brands that appear in joint ads have a clear advantage over incongruent brands. The results have both practical and theoretical implications.     

Human resource management in China revisited: introduction

This introduction attempts to provide an overview of the Special Issue of the IJHRM on ‘Human Resource Management in China Revisited’. It deals first with the economic background of the recent changes in the PRC from 1978 to the present day, exploring the change from a command economy to a more market-led one, as well as the demise of ‘iron rice bowl’ policy dominated by a model to Soviet-inspired personnel management in favour of one gradually being characterized by possibly Japanese-/Western-influenced human resource management (HRM), albeit with ‘Chinese characteristics’. It then introduces the main debates in the field before summing up, at some length, the empirical contributions based on ‘state of the art’ field research contained in the papers submitted. Last, it deals with the comparative setting of the contributions on China vis-à-vis the national HRM systems of Japan and South Korea.

1. The Unnatural Hypothesis of a Constant Rate of Interest

There are loan contracts which assume a constant interest during several years and thereafter payment of the amount borrowed, but nowadays clauses are as a rule admitted giving the debtor right of conversion or repayment after a certain period, generally ten years. Low interest loans can be considered as perpetuities from a practical point of view, as long as no possibility is meant to exist that the market rate will fall under their nominal rate. Such a loan—as e.g. Consols—with the nominal rate i ₀ ought to be valued at a discount if the market rate is higher, say i > i ₀, the value being equal to the fraction i ₀ : i. But constant rates are no rule in practice.     

有选择地提高联合双原子高次谐波发射效率的一种方法

利用经典的SMT理论分析了一维普薛耳-特勒势（PT势）模型原子在激光场作用下的动力学行为，优化了联合双原子模型；并用特殊设计的双色激光场辐照该模型，采用Crank—Nicholson方法求解其原子的含时Schroedinger方程，得到了它的高次谐波发射谱．该谱表明，可以将截止位置为Ip＋8Up的高谐波发射效率提高到10^-9．     

某居民楼山墙裂缝产生原因分析及处理

针对某居民楼山墙裂缝产生的位置、形状,结合房屋检测及房屋现状,认为该居民楼的倾斜变形及变形缝被填塞共同导致了房屋山墙产生损伤裂缝。为确保房屋安全,建议对部分地基进行灌浆加固,清除变形缝内填塞物,恢复房屋相对变形能力,对开裂墙体采用压力灌浆的方法进行修补加固。
