Fast-food consumption and body weight. Evidence from the UK

This work examines the role of fast-food consumption on body weight in the United Kingdom, by means of two recent waves from the British Household Panel Survey. We use quantile regression to examine whether increases in consumption of this unhealthy food category affect differently individuals located at selected quantiles of the body mass index distribution. Our results support some findings in the literature, but also point to new conclusions. Quantile regression estimates suggest that fast-food consumption affects individuals with higher body mass index more heavily, especially women. Irrespective of gender, we also find a negative and significant correlation between the price of take-away meals and snacks and weight. Some policy implications are discussed on the basis of our main results.

On the performance of the ordinary least squares method under an error component model

Starting from the one-dimensional results by Wang et al (1994) we consider the performance of the ordinary least squares estimator in comparison to the best linear unbiased estimator under an error component model with random effects in units and time. Upper bounds are derived for the first-order approximation to the difference between both estimators and for the spectral norm of the difference between their dispersion matrices.     

关于加强高校创业教育的若干思考

随着我国高校扩招带来的巨大的就业压力，高校创业教育问题被提上议事日程。本文从扩招带来的就业人数激增、就业形势严峻、国际创业教育发展趋势等几个方面分析了我国高校创业教育的必要性及其含义，回顾了创业教育产生与发展的状况。从思想认识、理论研究、课程设置、组织实施等方面分析了中国高校的创业教育面临的困境及不足，并据此提出了我国高校应有的创业教育理念、内容及其实施措施，即正确理解高校创业教育的内涵、科学设置高校创业教育基本内容、探索高校实施创业教育合适途径。     

The effect of mass shootings on the demand for guns

Unfortunately, mass shootings are common occurrences in the United States. When one occurs, it makes national news, becomes fodder for the ongoing national gun debate among politicians and activists, and may impact the demand for guns through fears of violence and future gun regulation. We attempt to estimate the overall effect of mass shootings on gun demand in the United States and how this effect varies across the nation, time, and other factors. Mass shootings are found to increase the national demand for firearms, with the effect lasting up to 2 months. Stronger effects are found in gun-heavy and/or Republican states but not necessarily near where the shooting occurred. Demand spikes are also larger if the shooter was White, female, or if the event took place in a rural setting, but seemingly less related to the specific venue, the shooter's age or known mental health, the number of fatalities, or weapon characteristics.

Adaptive Estimation of a Conditional Density

The authors consider the problem of estimating a conditional density by a conditional kernel density estimate when the error associated with the estimate is measured by the L₁‐norm. On the basis of the combinatorial method of Devroye and Lugosi ( 1996 ), they propose a method for selecting the bandwidths adaptively and for providing a theoretical justification of the approach. They use simulated data to illustrate the finite‐sample performance of their estimator.
