Corporate Raiders,Performance and Governance in Europe

I analyse 136 block purchases made by corporate raiders in Europe between 1990 and 2001. Contrary to the hypothesis that these investors expropriate the target companies, there is a positive market reaction to the first public announcement of these purchases. In the long‐run, raiders earn an abnormal profit when they sell their stakes. When they still held their positions at the end of the sample period, abnormal returns were insignificant. Raiders' activities do not improve operating performance. The findings are consistent with superior stock picking ability among these investors, but do not support the hypothesis that raiders are governance champions.

Economic policy with bounded controls

When investigating optimal policies for macroeconomic models, it is common practice to modify the objective function so that the resulting optimal control trajectories become acceptable from a practical point of view. In this paper we argue that the sole purpose of the objective function should be to express the preference of the decision makers, and that explicit bounds on the controls should be used to ensure that the optimal controls will be practical. Using a piece-wise quadratic objective function involving only the unemployment and inflation rates, which are state (endogenous) variables, we first develop a discrete minimum principle, giving necessary and sufficient optimality conditions. Then we perform various bounded control experiments with the 35-equation quarterly CLEAR model of the Canadian economy, which is very briefly described. The empirical results which were obtained using a version of the GRG algorithm are discussed in view of the conclusions that might be drawn for a real-world practical policy analysis.

Cost control based on value chain paying equal attention to earning more income and cutting down expense

According to the idea of cost control based on the value chain, several important factors are necessary. Firstly, it is necessary to have enough resources, which must be invested to create advantageous value chain based on customer value. It is also necessary to be sure of the cost advantage of the value chain. Secondly, the consumption of resources must be reduced as much as possible to enable the smallest operating cost for the value chain and make sure of the cost advantage based on maximum business value or profit. It is a kind of cost control from the whole view of creation and supply of value. In practice, it is also a kind of cost control system based on the value chain. It includes enough control and necessary resource investment from the view of the value creation, and keeps consumption of resources to a reasonable level from the view of the value supply. The main object of the first factor is to construct the advantageous value chain from creating customer value; and the second factor is to strengthen the advantageous value chain from supplying or producing customer value. Therefore it is a new kind of idea to explore this cost control from the whole view of creation and supply of value. It is more profitable for businesses to gain sustainable competitive advantage.     

辽宁省新农村建设用地集约利用控制标准初步研究

在社会主义新农村建设的过程中,非农建设用地的比例不断增大,农村建设用地的集约利用问题日益突出;对辽宁省农村建设用地集约利用控制标准作了初步研究,研究内容包括控制指标的选取、指标值的确定方法、标准体系的建立;提出了保障新农村建设用地控制标准实施的几点措施。

本文在对当前铁路客站治安防控现状进行分析的基础上，提出了加强“五大能力、六大机制”建设这一构建科学、高效的客站治安防控体系的架构支撑，实现由事后处置为主向超前防范为主、由重治标向重治本的转变，是从更深层次和领域研究解决火车站地区治安问题的一次探索。     

对中国上市公司控制权溢价的实证分析

运用2001-2004年的样本数据。在对中国上市公司控制权的隐性利益水平所进行的分析显示，中国上市公司的转让溢价水平除了与转让比例呈正相关以外，转让溢价水平与净资产收益率、现金比率、流通股数和公司规模均呈负相关。同时，随着转让比例的上升，一开始溢价比例会增加，但当转让比例达到一定程度时，溢价比例又会下降，溢价比例与转让比例之问是一种倒U型的非线性关系。
